President Elect Thompson and Our Next Terrorist Attack
News By Us ^ | Apr 04, 07 | Bruce Walker

Posted on 04/04/2007 8:04:09 PM PDT by Josh Painter

Amyone really watching the development of politics in America today must see that Fred Thompson is really President-Elect Fred Thompson. I say that as someone who thinks Rudy Giuliani would make a great wartime president and who would also do many of the good things for America that he was able to do for New York.

The reality, however, is that even the shadow candidacy of Thompson is casting a huge shadow indeed. The online Sean Hannity poll showed Thompson getting, as an unannounced candidate, more votes that all other Republican candidates combined. Fred Thompson, as an unannounced candidate, is winning every straw poll in the South. Fred Thompson, who will soon be visiting with Republican members of Congress to discuss his possible candidacy, has been overwhelmed by senators and congressman who want to talk with him (probably because he is the best chance Republicans have of re-taking Congress.)

Will he win the general election? Fred Thompson is likeable, persuasive and savvy man. Thompson is a conservative on every major issue of the day. Democrats will nominate a Leftist, not a centrist, as their nominee. When is the last time a Leftist defeated a conservative in a presidential election? Try 1916, when Woodrow Wilson – using the Ku Klux Klan Leftist South eked by Charles Evans Hughes. That was not just the last time but the only time.

Why? The Battleground Poll, the most respected of all the polls, has consistently for many years shown that sixty percent of Americans consider themselves as “conservative” while only thirty-five percent of Americans consider themselves as “liberals” (those poll have the option of calling themselves a “moderate” or “don’t know” and choose “conservative” or “liberal” instead.)

...President Bush, at his best does not approach Fred Thompson at his worst as a communicator...

" I personally know one lifelong liberal Democrat from New Jersey who has said he would rather vote for Rudy Giuliani or Fred Thompson before Hillary. This, of course, is anecdotal, but I don't think he's alone." If this is true and it is pervasive, then it says a lot.

About Fred Thompson and his denomination of being in the Church of Christ, about the issue of Israel ? what do they believe or not believe with regards to Israel ?
We ( the USA ) should never harm Israel or forget Israel, we should always support Israel.

Precisely why I wonder about Thompson. Someone who thinks Rudy is presidential material has questionable judgement.

"And even an ardent FT supporter knows that FT offers ONLY that and NOTHING more."

Ah-ha! That is where we differ.

Fred has stated that he would do exactly as W is doing, and wants to continue what W has started. That's more than anyone can expect, at this point. Fred's history has demonstrated that he does act on his conscience, not necessarily on consensus. I respect that.

"People who are leaders gravitate to leadership positions, and FT has NONE."

Come on, now, you that's not fair. There have been, before now, those who have had no leadership and have done very well for us. Besides, the ability to motivate others with words, IS a leadership skill.

That he lacks the experience in organizing an effort, planning and implementing his plan, or in delegating is moot. Those are well scripted functions, and he has or will have, plenty of experienced assistance to guide him.

The alternatives? Obama or the Hildebeast? Neither has leadership experience, either.

Look, Rudy is a great guy. I have no ill feelings towards him. I have always liked and respected him. I also like and respect, for instance, Joe Lieberman, too. BUT! He is just too liberal to be MY choice for POTUS. Also, personally, I feel he will give away the house, in order to entice the dems to work with him. And since he already maintains many like positions as they do, it won't take much for us to be going backwards. I'd rather move forward.

“Also, personally, I feel he will give away the house, in order to entice the dems to work with him.”

Just the opposite, he would stand up to them, as he did in NYC. People who lived there when he was Mayor said liberals hated him, because he cut welfare, didn’t buckle under to the ACLU when fighting crime. He is one tough guy. And he is fiscally conservative too — why do you think Steve Forbes endorsed him?

And he would appoint conservative judges, the only place where social conservatism comes into play — that’s why Ted Olson and other prominent conservatives support him.

You know, it just occurred to me (yeah, I'm slow like that LOL), that we are going back and forth, everybody is, on what seems to be our core principles. And they are important. Extremely important, I think.

But there are more issues that need addressing in this Country, if we, as conservatives and as a whole Nation, are ever going to come to grips with our history and our living legacy.

I know my take is not popular on FR, but, I do worry about our future, having a future as a Nation...undivided. I think we have so many issues to tackle, so much toothpaste to put back in the tube, if you will. I am also concerned about a candidates position and history on things like racism, the un-evenness and hypocrisy of free trade (the imbalance in trade and in manufacturing and the ever widening wealth gap), the effective role of the States, individual rights, police powers, the justice system, energy solutions, etc.

These are the nuts n' bolts of daily life, and they need addressing, too.

Now isn't THAT the tightrope we walk between "electable" candidates and more obstinate conservative ones. That's the thing I really worry about with all of the Big Three. I personally don't believe a President Giuliani would govern as a liberal... at first. I do, however, believe he'd be willing to sell out on key issues in order to secure Democrat help on other ones, most likely the war. I could see something similar happening with an opportunist like Romney or a narcissistic "maverick" like McCain. If any of those three win the nomination, I'll support and vote for them, because all three men are patriots and, despite their several flaws, will likely be strong wartime leaders.

It's 2007 right now, though, and I don't feel like I have to cast aside my principles just yet. I want an alternative who will be a strong leader on domestic issues as well as abroad. That alternative may never come in time for primaries, but I'll do what I can until then.

Actually this is the WORST INDICTMENT of Fred Thompson, acknowledging that ALL HE CAN DO IS MAKE SPEECHES — if someone writes it out for him.

I have no idea how you've come to this conclusion. Thompson is a lawyer. Lawyers are trained to talk spontaneously, off the cuff, on their feet.

And the article does not conclude or acknowledge that making speeches is all Thompson can do. It just points up an ability to communicate. Do you actually believe that's a bad thing?

I wish I thought moderate Dems would vote for Fred but I really do not think so.

I think they will. I know of a multitude of them here in TN that will vote for him and from what I read in other forums, he is pretty popular with moderate/conservative Dems in other places.

"But let him get close to the White House, and you can bet Team Hillary will pull out the big guns."

What is she going to do? Accuse him of corruption? Adultery? Ethics violations? Lying under oath? Unintended use of cigars?

ping if you care to respond to hosepipe who has been stating the above repeatedly on FR

In your myopic view anyone who likes a Republican you don’t like is a RINO and yet I will note it is freepers like you who condemn nearly all the announced Republican candidates and support candidates who either a) haven’t announced; or b) couldn’t win. Those non-winning positions make you much, much worse than a RINO.

And I will note that Newt’s unfavorable numbers among Republicans according to a FNC poll a month ago are over 65%.

I've seen enough of hosepipe and his twisted up worldview to not pay much attention to him, prairie.

The fact that he has a problem with women isn't a bit surprising, though. (He has a problem with people in general.........especially decent ones).

But spamming is not approved behavior on this forum, is it? So if he's posting anti-female posts on multiple threads, perhaps the Mods should be notified tjhat he's breaking FR rules.

What the heck has Giuliani done other than talk about the war?!? I honestly sometimes think that you go out of your way to play Devil’s Advocate.
