Somebody at Seattle's KOMO-TV sure doesn't like Matt Drudge.
After linking to a photo at KOMO's website, the station had the image changed from one of an illegal drug/alien/terrorist smuggling tunnel between Lynden, Washington and British Columbia, to this:

Ahh, KOMO, the snooty liberal sister of KVI and Ken Schram's rant box. Cutting off their noses to spite their faces. Petty morons.

It's one thing to link to a story somewhere, because the link takes you to the site where you read the story, see who put it there, and read whatever ads or other information they require you to look at in exchange for providing information.
But linking to a picture just pulls the picture over, taking up bandwidth with no gain (or often any obvious recognition) for the station.
I remember a while back a blog site, I think it might have been RedState but don't quote me on that, had some liberal somewhere link to one of their pictures, and they got even the same way, by replacing the picture with things that the site would be unlikely to want people to see.
I don't know what the proper net ettiquite is for this. You probably can't copy the picture, and making someone go to the other page to see the picture seems like it would make things hard for your own readers.
What is the right answer?

After linking to a photo at KOMO's website, the station had the image changed from one of an illegal drug/alien/terrorist smuggling tunnel between Lynden, Washington and British Columbia, to the below image.
This image briefly appeared at the Drudge Report before quickly being removed. KOMO-TV graphic
Within minutes, Drudge's people noticed the image on Drudgereport.com and had it removed. The Radio Equalizer captured it during that brief time.
Here's the KOMO smuggling story link. I thought about putting the tunnel picture here, in hopes I could get my own custom Web scolding from the station, but I'll hold off for now.

Yeap ~ it's like filling your swimming pool with a hose connected to your neighbors faucet ~ you get all the benefit and your neighbor pays for it.
Rather then hot linking an image you could just use this HTML:
{A HREF ="file location" TARGET="_blank"}click here to see image{/a}
Replace the { & } symbols with < & > and insert the image URL into the "file location" spot and this will open the image on a seperate page. Like this
click here to see image
