Gasoline prices are high, and we need to make them go down! I have started a petition that can be downloaded at http://www.biggreenfish.com/gaspetition. This petition asks that the United States Congress do everything within its power to lower gas prices to a bearable level, and that it set the initiative for scientists and engineers to find the best alternative fuel source to gasoline and discover the best way to convert our nation to that new fuel source. Download it and pass it on to all your friends. I will turn the signed petitions for my area over to my congressional representative during the first weeks of May. All the petitions need to be in the hands of our representatives before they leave for the summer break. If this petition does what it can, it will launch America above other countries in the fuel market. We would not have to be manipulated by foreign fuel producers any longer; America would produce its own fuel. So, let's all do our part to strengthen America!

I understand your personal struggle with gas, while catching the unmistakable whiff of DU from your post.

The problem with government regulation of anything is you can't make a stationary price for an ever changing commodity. The government cannot control OPEC or their prices. So the only possibility would be regulating prices in a flexible manor to corespond to OPECs prices. The downside to that is, that as an investor, if I can't get what I feel is a fair return on my investment, I'm goig to pull my money (along with alot of other people) which then hamstrings the petroleum industry. Without capital the oil companies can't operate properly, which drives operating costs up, which since it has a cap on it, can't raise anymore capital. Which now means an industry will be in a down hill spiral.
A great example of what happens with too much government regulation, just go back to the late '70's. Jimmy Carter tried to regulate everything from the airlines to telecomm. Jimmys attitude to everything was regulation. If it wasn't government regulation, it was personal regulation, what some call conservation. Look at the shape of our economy back then along with the outlook of the people. By the middle of the '80's EVERYTHING was different.
So many of the libs talk about government this, and social programs that. When they talk this they're actually talking socialism or communism. Have them name one country that has successfully implemented socialism or communism. And what I mean by successfully, is a country that has more wealth per capita, better benefits per person, more security, and more freedom.

How 'bout we just go and drill ANWR (and California---did I mention of the Coast of Florida) and get some more oil there.
While we are at it---why not build a few more refineries, and upgrade the ones we presently have.
How 'bout that?

Congress could lower the price of gasoline within a short time.
It would involve 1)CUTTING TAXES, 2) developing a single national formulation standard instead of the 18+ varieties we have now.
3) Allowing for the building of more refineries 4) Opening Anwar, Utah, California and the Gulf of Mexico to drilling.

Buy a bike! Then it won't effect you, and just imagine how all of your pals over at the DU will put you on a pedestal for doing your part to "save" the environment.

Then you could get a job and move out of your mom's basement. There's usually a Taco Belch within walking distance in most "Blue" areas of the country.

I can see how high gas prices would be especially painful to the average tin foiler living in his 1970 Torino station wagon at a reststop near Winnemuca NV.
