The Biden administration is planning to push a policy that would require tobacco companies to reduce the level of nicotine in cigarettes sold in the U.S.
The policy would see the amount of nicotine reduced to 'nonaddictive levels'.
Although it would likely not come into force for several years, the move would likely disrupt the entire tobacco industry.
The Food and Drug Administration first needs to outline the proposed new rules before inviting comments from the public. Then final rules would be published.
Even then, tobacco companies would be able to sue likely delaying any implementation of the policy reports the Wall Street Journal.
The administration had been weighing whether to push ahead with the policy as part of President Biden's Cancer Moonshot initiative which hopes to reduce deaths from cancer by at least 50% over the next 25 years.
The move would be the biggest step by the government to curb smoking since 1998 when tobacco companies paid more than $200 billion to help states pay for healthcare.
The FDA describes nicotine as 'an addictive chemical found in cigarettes and other tobacco products.'
Although nicotine is addictive and gets people hooked on cigarettes, the chemical itself does not cause cancer, heart disease or lung disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention blames other harmful compounds in cigarette smoke that are linked with more than 480,000 deaths in the U.S. each year,
The CDC calculates there to be 30.8 million smokers in the nation - about 12.5%. The numbers rose slightly in 2020 during the pandemic.
The amount of nicotine in cigarettes can be reduced through various methods including an adjustment in the blend of tobacco leaves or by using different types of paper or filters

This is the greatest argument against any form of gun control. Anyone remember when this all started and non-smokers just wanted a section of a restaurant where they didn’t have to sit next to a smoker? And now look at its become.
I am very surprised that Biden has not moved to strike down federal laws against cannabis.
Add to this a proposed ban on menthol cigarettes. I imagine organized crime and the Mexican drug cartels will quickly gear up to provide these products once these bans are in place. Too bad the lessons of Prohibition have been lost.
Ahh That Joe Biden! He is going to save the world. One ‘crisis’ at a time. All Glory to Joe Biden

Smokers need to stock up on their favorite smokes now.
It is a great inflation hedge—and if things get ugly will be an excellent barter item.
Never underestimate Joe’s ability to F things up.
Seems like a great new tax collecting idea! Lower the nicotine amount per cigarette causing smokers to smoke (i.e. buy) more to get the same nicotine “hit”. Brilliant! More tax money!
Meanwhile some states promote pot.
So people will have to smoke more to get the same buzz. How much did the Tobacco companies give Hunter to get that om the table?
Meanwhile they hand out crack pipes like confetti.
The problem they have with nicotine is it isn’t deadly enough.
Wow.. he is a idiot. He better do the gun ban before he take cigs or nicotine out of them. It’s like this admin is asking for it. Pushing and pushing and pushing.

The dichotomy between Federal and many State laws helps with the current state of anarcho-tyranny.
With all the chaos he’s caused now he’s concerned about nicotine proof he still has his head up his tube.
“This is the greatest argument against any form of gun control.”
And even stupider is that this will end up just like the fallout of gun control. All people have to do with internet capacity is order tobacco products outside the country until our omnipotent government bans the entry of tobacco using the thought that only criminals have real tobacco.
And with the way our government thinks today, never light three on a match. Let’s see, by the people, for the people has perished.

Looks like the mafia will have a money making item again!
Nicotine is a very safe addiction. It’s all the other chemicals that cigarette makers put into the tobacco that does all the harm. This is why e-cigs — vaping — is such an excellent alternative nicotine delivery system. Is it any wonder cigarette makers are dead set against vaping? Of course those cheap imported flavored vaping cartridges are as bad as ciggies and are marketed to mindless children of all ages . . .
“I am very surprised that Biden has not moved to strike down federal laws against cannabis.”
This.
I hope someone that knows will explain what happens when pot is legal for recreational use and tobacco is illegal?
This is so dumb, even from an authoritarian nanny-state perspective.
They’re not making cigarettes “nonaddictive”; they’re just increasing the number of cigarettes you have to smoke to get the same amount of nicotine. And that will give smokers more tar and other carcinogens.
So we’ll get more lung cancer and other smoking-related diseases.
