Hi FRiends,
I have two brothers who I love very much, theyre young and libertarian Ron Paul supporters, sigh. We get along and Im hoping that one day theyll come back to conservatism, but they have bought into a theory that I dont think makes much sense:
Abe Lincoln was a dictator.
There are many websites dedicated to this nonsense you can Google "Abe Lincoln dictator" and get some weird stuff, if you want to check it out.
I need your help in busting this myth are there any books I can read on this subject to dispel this stuff? Do you know any of the arguments to combat this nonsense? Ie. Lincoln did not want to free the slaves.
Thanks for taking time out of your day to help me out, -Erod
Unilateral secession is nothing but anarchy. Even Madison said as much.
I return my thanks for the copy of your late very powerful Speech in the Senate of the United S. It crushes "nullification" and must hasten the abandonment of "Secession." But this dodges the blow by confounding the claim to secede at will, with the right of seceding from intolerable oppression. The former answers itself, being a violation, without cause, of a faith solemnly pledged. The latter is another name only for revolution, about which there is no theoretic controversy.
The Right to Revolution always exists, but to be morally justified, that revolution has to be undertaken only in the face of "intolerable oppression" and only after all legal remedies and petitions to stop the oppression have failed.
Not one Neo-Confederate on this forum has even once shown what oppression of the South occurred in 1860, nor that any of their grievances went unanswered. The Southern states in 1860 did not even claim oppression.
Perhaps you can enlighten us as to what the Federal Government of 1860, which was BTW controlled mostly by pro Southern interests, did to inspire revolution (i.e secession). Please tell us why the Southern states felt justified in seizing property that did not belong to them. And please do spell out that clause in the constitution that says that if you are unhappy with the results of an election, you can take your ball, and the other guys ball too, and go home.
no he’s from IL who then moved south to KS
he’s from IL who moved south to KS.
why even bother replying
Well, it looks like everyone beet me to it. Good luck defending Lincoln. An honest study of history reveals the destruction of our constitution started with him. Personally I think he should have been tried and shot with Sherman for the mass murder of thousands of Georgians during the Invasion From the North. He did not like blacks and had a plan to send them all back to Africa. He did not free all slaves, only the ones in the “rebellion” (defending) states. Oh, and yes, he made himself a dictator as several people have correctly pointed out. If you want a real hero study Calvin Coolidge.
“Based on what rule of law?”
Your conclusion isn’t based on any law, but I can at least say all lands of a country belong to that country, just like after our revolutionary war. England has no claim to anything here, but according to you they do, or is your anti-Southern bigotry just getting in the way?
“Except that United States independence was recognized by King George in the Treaty of Paris signed in 1783.”
So? It doesn’t mean the King couldn’t claim property according to you.
The fact is you need Fort Sumter to support your anti-Southern bigotry. Without it, the North was an invader the south was rightly defending herself against.
Your past posts show you clearly to be a liberal disrupter to this site. You are a pro-homosexual, anti-Southern anti-Conservative bitgot. Something tells me you had a bad experience while in the Navy at Charleston and grew to hate Southerners because of it. Perhaps this is why the only threads you generally post on here on FR are civil war threads. You no doubt are a DU dummy liberal that comes here only for the anti-Southern bigotry you display. You know even less than Obama about law and history, using only bits and pieces of each to support your anti-Southern claims.
love that quote by the ignorants, ARF
by over a half million men dying, yea some save.
No, buckeye is the truck driver after birther. humblegunner makes the videos.
stop right now you’re using facts , you know it confuses them,
Lincoln as a State Representative voted to prevent blacks from owning land, businesses, or residences in Illinois. Lincoln, like Horace Greeley, saw the west as a pristine land for the white man exclusively. No blacks need apply. Try to forget the 50 years of Hollywood propaganda regarding the War.
“I will say, then, that I am not, nor have ever been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races ... I am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” -— Abraham Lincoln
ROFL
How naive you are - about Lincoln, and about the response on FR.
First Inaugural Address
I assume you meant Lincoln's first inaugural speech as something that erod could use in arguments with his/her brothers. You should realize that Lincoln's speech was widely interpreted at the time as a declaration of war against the South. Southern newspapers and Democrat newspapers in the North interpreted it that way. Republican newspapers thought the speech wonderful. The country was very sharply divided, and the speech did not help matters.
You are describing yourself. Why don’t you go count your posts on FR regarding Lincoln and the CW. You are clearly obsessed, CLEARLY! I feel sorry for you.
I’m not the one shooting blanks numbnuts. Check with your inbred Chicago relatives on that one.
“I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” -— Abraham Lincoln, 3/14/1861 First Inaugural Speech
“I will say, then, that I am not, nor have ever been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races ... I am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” -— Abraham Lincoln
*snickering... no..... laughing, you nailed it.
RB - Since you introduced me to Judy Collins, “Amazing Grace”, I wanted to return the favor....it’s at the link.
Also, my daughter is working on her post-graduate and her thesis deals w/the CW. Wanted you to know that a couple of your posts (and some others on these threads) helped in her research. Your’s might be a rusty bucket, but it sure doesn’t have any holes in it:)
