And where was he wrong? What power did the president have to interfere with slavery where it existed?

Yes we know. Lincoln was a racist. But according to you he was the only one in the U.S. at the time, in spite of the fact that his views were far more advanced than any Southerner you would care to name. But you never want to go there.
