Hi FRiends,
I have two brothers who I love very much, theyre young and libertarian Ron Paul supporters, sigh. We get along and Im hoping that one day theyll come back to conservatism, but they have bought into a theory that I dont think makes much sense:
Abe Lincoln was a dictator.
There are many websites dedicated to this nonsense you can Google "Abe Lincoln dictator" and get some weird stuff, if you want to check it out.
I need your help in busting this myth are there any books I can read on this subject to dispel this stuff? Do you know any of the arguments to combat this nonsense? Ie. Lincoln did not want to free the slaves.
Thanks for taking time out of your day to help me out, -Erod
The major difference between the South and yogurt is that yogurt has a living culture.
You’re one of those Baptists who doesn’t recognize other Baptists in the liquor store?
Nope. I’m a Presbyterian. Baptist do all their drinking out back, Presbyterians drink in the house.
As you can plainly see, there are plenty of pretend conservatives that would demonize Lincoln if you let them. I’m sure that you can sort out the wheat from the chaff.
Just keep in mind the agenda of it would would propagandize at you in one post (post 151) and insult you almost immediately (post 155).
Good luck
Your points are irrelevant to the matter at hand.
Do you deny that Lincoln’s publicly stated positions on Dred Scott, slavery in the territories, etc. are what led the southern states to leave the union ... or not? That is the question at hand.
I don't have to defend anything cause I'm not claiming anything about racial attitudes of the north in the 1860s.
As for southerners owning black men, one third of the black population in the south were freemen.
Woo hoo! Only 67% slaves. What a great thing to brag about.
Read some history. There were years of struggle about whether slavery would spread into the new territories or be limited to where it already was.
After Lincoln was elected, the South got afraid that they might have to do their own work or pay employees, so they left the union.
When will you understand that whites and blacks grew up together in the South?
Yes, no greater love has a man than that he has for his captor.
Oh well, same thing.
Just kidding!
*snort!*
That makes you a co-religionist of the Puritans then, does it not?
Pffft, you’re obsessed with race.
Constitutionally provided anarchy.
Bummer of a detail, that.
That is absolutely false, as any look at the 1860 census would show. According to that, there were 132,400 free black men and woman of all ages in the 11 state confederacy. There were 3,521,000 slaves. Fewer than one in 25 blacks in the confederacy were free. not one in three. Nationwide it was about 1 in 9 was free.
I honestly cannot fathom how you people can possibly believe the nonsense you post.
The major difference between the South and yogurt is that yogurt has a living culture.
Funny. I will leave you to your rich and deep NE culture. Please do not drink bourbon, listen to jazz, blues, country-western, bluegrass, gospel, soul, or rock n’roll. Refrain from eating anything known as “Southern Cooking” or “Soul Food” (Same thing, different cut of meat) or “Creole”. Do not read Mark Twain, Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Thomas Wolfe, Harper Lee, Tom Robbins, Tom Wolfe or Truman Capote. Just buy a piece of beef and boil the sh!t out of it, put on some great show tunes, crack open some Canadian Rye and read Maureen Dowd columns. If this routine doesn’t turn you gay, count yourself lucky.
Speaking of obsessions, why haven't you popped up with that "Lincoln was gay" nonsense y'all seem to love?
Race, race, race. Even the effing census form has a million questions about race. American, I am an American, my race is irrelevant.
We all do, we all do.
LOL
I thought NS was from the South?
So sayeth that wannabe Constitutional scholar, the master copy and paster Chicago Yankee, race obsessed, non-sequitur.

The Great vote panderer, Abraham Lincoln.... You did say "Dred Scott"! Here it is:
I have said that the separation of the races is the only perfect preventative of amalgamation. I have no right to say all the members of the Republican party are in favor of this, nor to say that as a party they are in favor of it. There is nothing in their platform directly on the subject. But I can say a very large proportion of its members are for it, and that the chief plank in their platform -- opposition to the spread of slavery -- is most favorable to that separation. Such separation, if ever effected at all, must be effected by colonization; and no political party, as such, is now doing anything directly for colonization. Party operations at present only favor or retard colonization incidentally. The enterprise is a difficult one, but 'when there is a will there is a way;' and what colonization needs most is a hearty will. Will springs from the two elements of moral sense and self-interest. Let us be brought to believe it is morally right, and, at the same time, favorable to, or, at least, not against, our interest, to transfer the African to his native clime, and we shall find a way to do it, however great the task may be. The children of Israel, to such numbers as to include four hundred thousand fighting men, went out of Egyptian bondage in a body.
