Terri's Day and nation's independence protects life culture

Kevin Fobbs May 29, 2006

America's Culture of Life is truly the legacy of one woman whose death forever changed our nation because of actions that were not in her hands but in those of her husband and his lawyers. Yet for millions of Americans we will forever link our own celebration of our nation's independence to the courage of the Schindler family to go forward past the tragedy, past the personal sorrow, past the searing anguish to help America draw a distinct line in the sand, to issue a clarion call to America.

Our 4th of July is coming... Our Culture of Life Independence Day is on its way. Our month of Independence is a message that March 31st (Terri's Day) will signal, that July 4th will signal... and that the month of July will signal to defend the Culture of Life before we lose it forever.

When we talked with our family members or even our neighbors or our friends we may have spent but a moment reflecting upon why we are even gathered on a Memorial Day afternoon. Do we think about the sacrifice of our soldiers and of their families? Do we think about the long goodbyes which are never long enough... as the military families send their loved ones to war, to battle, to stand firm for our freedoms... for our life... for our nation and its values of faith?

How does Terri Schiavo and her legacy tie into this? Terri's legacy and Terri's Day is a representation of a right to live, and freedom to have the liberty to not have it compromised away, devalued by inconvenience, or litigated away by judges who celebrate a culture of death that would rob life from the womb, steal life from a hospital or hospice bed, and destroy and shatter a family's love for a daughter, a sister and aunt who was given a gift from God, but had it separated from her as easily as an ant would have its life take by an uncaring shoe... extinguished forever.

The families who send their loved ones off to war have to wonder as well, does America value their sacrifice? The families of the military have to wonder just where does its society draw the line on its values? A soldier who is in battle in Iraq or Afghanistan has to wonder if a Florida judge can take away the life of an innocent, what is the measure of his life? Would a judge in America suddenly decide that if he were injured, if he had to sacrifice a limb that the protesters outside his hospital bed would have more rights than he would or his family? Would this soldier have to wonder that if he or his fellow soldier were killed in battle, that upon their return that the protesters who would stand outside of his funeral... have more rights to be protected than the rights his family would have to a military burial with honor?

You see, the Culture of Life is about Terri Schiavo, because Americans now have to examine the life of our culture itself. We have to wonder if we as a nation of Christians and of a nation of faith and of a nation of compassion would allow for a state to murder an innocent woman and strip her family of their loved one then as a nation would we allow America to have other symbols of life, of our nation to be peeled away as well, all in open sight and in plain view of a dispassionate nation?

What does our American Culture mean if we allow millions of illegal aliens to literally browbeat us into submission by demanding that because they have stolen across our borders, demanded and received protection from local law enforcement in numerous cities throughout the U. S., obtained free or reduced educational opportunities by state public colleges that our own children could not qualify to receive the same financial aid assistance for. Are we that defenseless to let illegals strip our state coffers of housing assistance for loans and mortgages when tens of thousands in almost every state in America have legal citizens who are homeless, impoverished, or working poor or middle class Americans who need similar assistance but cannot receive it. And they are legal! They are citizens! They are Americans.

What is so wrong about our nation when we are so ready to compromise our freedoms, our culture's life, the life of an innocent and the taking of any life is the taking of our own children's life and their child's. And with each successive generation the nation and its life, its values, its traditions, and its language will disappear because we as Americans were too preoccupied — too narrow — to see that an illegal alien was taking your child's education, that a crusading death culture judge was preparing a bed, a room, a legal precedent to take your child, grandchild or sister or parent.

That is why I have stayed my course to defend the Culture of Life and to ask my fellow Americans to begin to understand that as Terri Schiavo's life was slowly ebbing from her body and as her mother Mary, father Bob, sister Suzanne, and brother Bobby waited in the Florida early morning air on March 31st, 2005, America was having part of its soul ebb away as well.

What will it take to spark an interest, a concern, and a passion for protecting one's own life? Some may say that it would take a clear and present danger — like tanks rolling down your neighborhood street or another 9/11 that strikes at the heart of America. Do we have the convenience to wait? Do we wait until a state legislature in Maine or California or Delaware or Ohio or Illinois decides that your mother's decision to live is determined by a hospital "bean counter" who decides that your mother's life is not based upon a "Will To Live" but an ability to pay her bill? What about a baby, not born, but already set for murder in the womb — not because the mother is pro-life or pro-death but because "the law" says the unborn baby's life is expendable because the baby's genes are determined to be part of a class or a group or a race or of an ethnicity which pre-programs the child, un-born, to death?

America is being murdered in small pieces. It is seeing its values, its life, its culture disemboweled with the finesse of a skilled surgeon. And it is America's poll takers and its legislators and its uncaring, disinterested, and uninvolved who are handling the scalpel. Take the scalpel away. Contact www.Terrisfight.org to join the Foundation's battle to educate America about the right to live. Go to Terri's Day on www.kevinfobbs.com to learn about new updates on Terri's Day and the event to celebrate the Culture of life.

So on Independence Day and Independence month of July will we have any Americans who will sign up and join the Culture of Life movement in their community? Even if it is to sign a pledge, hand out a flyer, become aware of legislators and judicial candidates who have agreed to stand firm for the Culture of Life — a crusade that is based not only upon the life of Terri Schiavo's legacy but equally crucial based also upon the legacy of the right to live, to defend our culture and the life of its values.

Terri's Day is not the end of a national movement but the beginning of a national contract with itself to stand for a future that our nation can guarantee for its children and for a culture that will insure life. The right to live will be Terri's legacy — our legacy... one nation under God. Join us in your homes, on your family picnics, out camping and celebrating July 14th and 15th ... Our American Culture of Life belongs to each and every one of us... We must protect it. Let's celebrate together.

There is a lot to address here, and I want to do it justice. To do so, however, I will have to wait until tomorrow. Unfortunately I have to take a powerful "cocktail" of medications, and by seven or eight o'clock each night I become a zombie. I did not wish to leave your questions hanging without some brief acknowledgement. Good night to all!

Perhaps y'all don't realize how you appear to others, outside your own small group, who happen upon this thread. Your over-the-top name-calling of anyone with whom you disagree severely damages your credibility, along the lines of the boy who cried wolf.

Thank you.

It's a shame that these people are so unable to handle honest debate on this topic..... that they substitute personal attacks and name-calling as well as threats from the moderator to rescue them from dealing honestly with the facts.

It truly shows me how weak, phoney and artificial their arguments are.

They pretend to be so moral and "pro-life" when in fact they display nothing but contempt and intolerance for others.

And they expect others to believe they speak for God?

It's a shame that these people are so unable to handle honest debate on this topic.....

The more I have examined this topic, the less room I have found for honest debate. With which of the following would you disagree:

  1. It is unlawful to deliberately starve/dehydrate a patient who is in a minimally-concious state.
  2. A patient in a minimally-concious state may resemble one in a persistent vegetative state for periods of many hours on end, with only occasional brief periods of awareness.
  3. It is not possible to reliably determine that a patient is in a persistent vegetative state (as opposed to being in a vegetative period of a minimally-concious state) without examining/observing the patient for hours on end.
  4. Any doctor who diagnoseis PVS after less than an hour's examination/observation is a charlatan.
  5. None of the doctors who have stated that Terri is PVS have spent enough time examining her to make such a diagnosis.
  6. An EEG performed in the presence of significant muscle twiching is meaningless. No concientious doctor would declare a patient to have a "flatline" EEG merely because adjusting the machine to filter out muscle noise doesn't leave anything else. That would be equivalent to declaring that a wind-up music box doesn't work because it can't be heard over a jackhammer.
  7. Michael Schiavo has contradicted himself on so many subjects that he cannot be reasonably regarded as a credible witness.
  8. Joan Schiavo's behavior is inconsistent with her being Terri's "best friend" and with her believing that Terri had a wish to be dehydrated if incapacitated. Indeed, her behavior is largely inconsistent with her being Terri's "best friend"; since Joan explicltly claimed under oath to be Terri's best friend, if she's lying about that she cannot be deemed a credible witness.
  9. Scott Schiavo gave an account of statements Terri made in a social situation (funeral of grandmother-in-law); even if Scott's description of the statements is accurate, the way Greer et al. have construed them is not reasonable.
Michael's behavior is wrong on so many levels that one would have to disprove many things that appear to be indisputable in order for it to become even remotely justifiable. As such, I see little room for honest informed debate.

Analysis from Wizbang of a NYT endorsement on the news of the day: The pillory is attempted, with the dems chasing hapless Joe Lieberman who committed a sin, it seems, unforgivable in thinking innocent Terri not be put to death. The previously little known challenger, with sidekick Mikey, stands opposite on the euthanasia issue.

With Joe Lieberman on one side, the New York Times and Michael Schiavo on the other side, the divide grows stark as the dems redefine themselves to the left.

As Mr. Lieberman sees it, this is a fight for the soul of the Democratic Party -- his moderate fair-mindedness against a partisan radicalism that alienates most Americans. "What kind of Democratic Party are we going to have?" he asked in an interview with New York magazine. "You've got to agree 100 percent, or you're not a good Democrat?"

Panning the Coloradoan...

"Thumbs down to the Coloradoan for publishing the anti-Musgrave article, 'Schiavo campaigns for Musgrave's ouster' on the front page (July 13). I realize the Coloradoan is a liberal newspaper, but this goes too far. It deserves little or no coverage, much less front page. It serves no useful purpose except to further your own political gain. I believe that most readers want a newspaper that has at least some degree of balance." Thomas Ely, Fort Collins

You don't want degate. When was the last time you bothered to listen to anybody but the cheerleaders? I guess you have spent the last few years following Michael Schiavo, and know his innermost thoughts. Have you ever met the man? Were you in Florida during this time?

You post of list of assumptions and speculations, and try to make it seem like facts. I'll answer:
1. Yes, but there the evidence presented did not rise to the level required to justify your speculaton. You weren't there. I wasn't either. There was a valid court hearing of the people who were there. OJ and Michael are still on the street.
2. Observations made by independent parties with an agenda are always subject to controversy, and doubt. Some people make statements to rile up the base. You seem riled. It worked. It isn't necessarily the truth.
3. You made my point for me.
4. That is your opinion. It surely is not fact. Are you a trained medical specialist? What criteria do you use to define "charlatan"?
5. See #4. How much time did you spend observing TS?
6. Music box? See #4.
7. I have seemingly contradicted myself before. I'll even bet you have. It is called "what the other person wants to hear". It begins with a mindset, and sqeezes cheeks/plugs ears tight, to keep it that way.

8. Have you talked with Joan Schiavo? Do you think TS may have requested to be allowed to die, or did you hear her say something else? Does the passing of your wife effect your feelings enough to be objective.

9. Where's your hanging rope? You are much better at convicting folk without a trial, than those given the power for the job, that actually do have them. I guess you think God screwed up again.

A house built on such weak foundations will be washed away. Is that why you don't want anybody blowing up your theories!

I never said anything about murdering TS, yet I have been accused of supporting murder. I see that the courts haven't agreed with you, either.

I hope you consider listeneing to the Spirit of God, and spend more of your time telling people about the saving power in Jesus name. You're not bringing anybody to Christ with your hyperbole and emotions! Dwelling on this will keep others from seeing Jesus through any bad that may have happened. Terri's dead. If she was a Christian, she is in her eternal rest.

Looking at your profile, I join with my brethren and ask God to give you peace... and strength. I also ask Him to open you heart to love, and turn away from just protesting sinful behavior, while doing nothing to change the hearts of sinners.

In the garden, Adam and Eve had the opportunity to speak to God, face-to-face. God made it the perfect place. But, He knew what He created was going to rebel against Him. After all, He is God. Did He create something imperfect?

The serpent said "surely you will not die". Eve believed the serpent, and the serpent was right. The fruit opened their eyes to good and evil.

God gives us over to our desires. His Spirit calls gently. In your post, you used the music box/jackhammer analogy. I like it.

Satan is a deceiver. He wants you to make a lot of noise about peripheral issues. That way, it's harder to hear God calling them home!

Surely, all of us will die, and come up short of the God's requirements. But God, in His wisdom and love gave us Jesus, as a substitute, and He looks beyond our sin to see the Christ! Our sins have been washed away through our faith in His sacrifice.

Nobody called you to be a judge of sin... ANYTHING NOT IN THE PERFECT WILL OF GOD, is sin. God doesn't have a sin-o-meter. Gossiping and name-calling are just as bad as murder to Him!

Instead, put on the whole cloth of righteousness, decided before the world was created... and promised in blood.

Your newfound troll pal is gone this morning. Got the zot.

You chose sides, all in the name of Our Lord, no less.

He will not be here to cheer you on anymore. But cheer up, the New York Times will be on your side. So will Dr. Kevorkian and the far left handlers of the dems.

I have no bone to pick with you outside this thread. You seem to be decent enough on other threads and I would be on your side frequently enough, but something about our efforts to battle those who would decide our lives or death must really aggravate you and you toss out the pseudo-Christian stuff at us as if it were a physical weapon.

I said it before and I say it again. You are projecting. That is not a conservative value, but one commonly used by the left.

If you think your interpretation of what it is to be a Christian is the right way and ours is the wrong way, you would have been in the company of one, only yourself, at the vigil at Pinellas Park. Christians representing all perspectives were there, differing in many topics, we can only guess, but setting aside differences as minor and firmly united in our stance against true evil. That was unanimous, nobody dissenting!

Are you to judge them as all wrong and yourself as the only correct interpreter of Our Lord?

What is up with you anyway?

You have no idea what I posted, do you? Have you bothered to read it?

Pseudo-Christian? I don't know what criteria you use, but it sure isn't my Bible. I have 14 different versions on the shelf, and none of them agrees with that definition.

Being involved in an emotional event does not add credibility.

I have no newfound friends. There were some others that happen to understand what I said. Take off your blinders and tin-foil hat, and read the Word of God!

It must not be in your bible then. Maybe you should try a more original version. I use the Douay translation of the original Latin Vulgate of St. Jerome from the third century. I am a traditional Catholic.

You still project. I keep telling you the same thing and it sails right past you. Haters call people they hate haters. Racists call other races they hate racists. Etc. You are emotional and angry and accuse us of being emotional and angry. You may recognize this passage from Matthew in the Proverbs link I gave you. (I think it is KJV, but do not know for sure. You would know.)

Matthew 5:22:

“But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever shall say to his brother ‘Raca,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever shall say, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the hell of fire.”

As we are taught we have three pillars as three legs of a stool, Faith, Hope, and Charity, and the greatest of these is Charity. Charity means as well the Love of God. We show charity as Christians and you have shown us anger, assault, disruption. It is telling that you inspired the troll to register and come on line to support you!

I posted the Proverbs link. here. If you read it and understood you would not be here now saying what you say.

Another poster and I also quoted Matthew on knowing a tree by its fruits. That hasn't registered either.

It appears your emotions are a bit near sighted. Right above, I posted on the plight of Scott Thomas. If you are the Christian you profess to be, you would have read it and commented on it before myopically challenging me. What has been happening to Scott Thomas is appalling, and is a prime example of that for which we fight and defend.

Other posters have sought to enlighten you time and again and you gloss right over that and accuse us of glossing over your wisdoms.

I said it clearly enough. Your version of Christianity did not exist amongst the many varieties of Christians at Pinellas Park. It did have a place perhaps amongst the kinfolk of trolls there, the small group opposite us openly advocating for Mikey and the team who demanded Terri's death.

Today is Sunday, for us, a day of worship. I will be signing off accordingly, and will be back. You will be in our prayers today.

Dominus vobiscum.

I have one of those. But, fortunately for me, I also had the benfit of formal training in Greek and Hebrew exegesis, and have both Jewish and Gentile versions in their original words.

Manty "Traditional Catholics" don't always trust God. Their trust is in the church... and the inate goodness of man. But, SCRIPTURE tells us any membership in the church gives you a place in the church. Faith in Jesus' saving grace, gives eternal life. Jesus did not die for naught.

Traditional Catholic teaching also places a mortal priest between you and the Throne of God. According to all of my SCRIPTURES, we need no intercessory. Traditional Catholics believe that their is a purgatory, where your candle-lighting and rosary-fingering, can make a difference in the eternal resting place of a dead person. Sorry, there is no second chance.

I caan give you all of the Scripture quotes your church uses to justify itself. I won't fight that batte today. I' will just state that I obviously don't think membership as a RC will earn me a thing with God! for that fact, membership in my own church won't either!

God is concerned with individuals. He can fight battles better than naything you can do. Am I saying not to be saddened and speak against evil. God forbid. But, what I am saying, is that when you place your trust in man, it is misplaced. The verdict has already been passed. All have sinned. All shall die.

But, through Jesus, all can live again. How much time is left in eternity?

"MM, sometimes evil wins. It isn't excused though. Bring the homicidal judges to justice. They are criminals and sinners!"

FV,

It is time to stop this. The judges will not be tried. Terri is dead. Sinners they may be, but there will be no trials for any criminal activity.

To continue along this path is not good for your mental health. I advise that you turn away from this particular incident and work toward some sort of legislative solution.

I doubt you will succeed, though. Too many people have gone through the lingering dying process of those they love to give you what you want.

I am doing that right now with my wife's father, who is dying, even as we speak. Hospice is helping everyone understand that he is dying, and that the process is irrevocable. No more forcing him to eat or drink, against his wishes. He knows he is dying, and hopes for it to be soon.

You are not in a position to judge the desires and wishes of anyone other than yourself, and, perhaps close loved ones. The Terri Schiavo case is over. It is done. There will be no prosecutions, and I think you know that.

Find a new path. That's my advice to you.

Here's one I doubt they printed:

Editor,

"Wednesday, Michael Schiavo said Musgrave "had no clue" about Terri Schiavo's medical condition, noting that his wife's autopsy showed her brain was half the size of a normal woman her age."

Hmmmm?

Could the 13 day starvation/dehydration regime Terri's husband demanded
have led to her brain's shrinkage?

A recent North Country Gazette article noted that, "Drs. Thogmorton and Nelson claimed Terri's brain weighed
615 grams (about 50% weight.) But Thogmorton also stated this was the worst case of dehydration
he had ever seen. "Her body cavities were completely dry!"

Because the brain is 75% water Terri's brain undoubtedly was diminished by such abuse.

Congresswoman Musgrave's concern for the appalling mistreatment of a completely innocent
woman's torture is to be commended.

Michael's small minded obsession with discarding one wife for another is to be pitied.
