ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) President Bush says the deal allowing an Arab company to take over six major U.S. seaports should go forward and he will veto any bill that would stop it.
I think you're right. And I suspect I know exactly what it is, too.
The UAE government has set a very high standard for the rest of our trading partners by implementing new U.S. Department of Homeland Security standards at their own port facilities -- under which DHS and U.S. Customs personnel maintain an on-site presence in the UAE to conduct inspections of U.S.-bound cargo (and will eventually end up securing electronic seals on U.S.-bound containers).
People often complain about how much sovereignty the U.S. gives up with these international trade agreements with other countries, but what often gets lost in the mix is that these other countries usually cede far more sovereignty to the U.S. than we do to them.
This is beyond stupid.
Use the veto to allow an Arab company, albeit with a good record, but an Arab company, to manage several strategic ports in the United States. In a time of war. Against Islamic fascists.....
The mind reels. He is giving a gift to Hillary. I haven't seen this kind of tin ear since the Miers nomination.
Jesus wept. Just when Bush gets the Base back to him, he finds a way to p*ss it off.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
I'm stunned at our President's statement that he would veto a congressional bill to prohibit the transaction to UAE. Stunned.
American companies already run these ports, and will still run the ports. They are run by americans working in america (how would it be different).
All that changes here is that the money which now goes to the O&P foreign company will now continue up one more level to the DP World company. That company is owned by the UAE government, which will get money I suppose directly, as opposed to what happens in this country where the government doesn't OWN corporations but still gets 33% of their profits in the form of taxes. I wonder if the UAE will get that much of the money from the DP World company.
Just explain to us why this is a good idea.
In a Nutshell..!!
I hope so...but didn's something like this happen under Clinton? He was handing management of a west coast port to the Chinese? And weren't we just in an uproar?
He's really digging his heels in, as I expected. He will NOT allow folks to tell him he is dead wrong in this situation. He's killing the GOP and giving the Demoncrats RED MEAT!
GOOD. I want the most illuminating airing possible.
PERCEPTION is ruling the day, coupled with knee-jerk, emotional reaction.
Details and facts are needed and they will emerge soon.
No prob, we'll (those in favor of securing our ports and our borders) get our 2/3s to overide or we'll clean house come fall.
Is Dubai where Michael Jacksin is whoring?
Ahhhhhh,...its all coming together:
Dubai
Dubyah
Du Glove.
That's another misleading 'statistic'. I believe all packages are inspected by various means, x-ray, dog sniffing and other electronic means, but only a small percentage are physically opened and searched. It's simply impossible to open up and view every box.
That said, why would you want to throw your arms up in the air and so "oh well, it really doesn't matter because things are already bad now anyway"? If they're bad, let's not make them worse.
You're correct. Given the President's sterling record of protecting our southern border from illegal aliens, I can't see how anyone gets in a lather over things like ports. I thought we were all properly desensitized to the Homeland Security sham, but I must be the only one, at this point.
"Apparently, there is more to this than meets the eye."
Indeed!
I shudder to wonder what that is.
Don't look now, but your photobucket is full.

IINM he's got a "special friendship" with one of the Princes. I just didn't know if it was Dubai or somewhere else.
THIS brings out the veto pen? He hasn't yet made a case to the voters for approving the deal, but he goes immediately to a veto threat? What's wrong with this picture?
That was the ONE piece of news that made me re-consider my support for the acquisition ; )
