Confederacy of the determined - (Southern heritage buffs vow "Confederate History Month")
WASHINGTON TIMES.COM ^ | APRIL 24, 2005 | Christina Bellantoni

Posted on 04/24/2005 6:08:20 PM PDT by CHARLITE

Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.

The four candidates have differing views on the Confederacy, an issue that has been debated for years in the commonwealth.

"We're not just a few people making a lot of noise," said Brag Bowling, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers. "This is not a racial thing; it is good for Virginia. We're going to keep pushing this until we get it."

Each candidate recently shared his thoughts on what Mr. Bowling called a "litmus test for all politicians." Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would not support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Former state Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore would support something that recognizes everyone who lived during the Civil War.

Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch would support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Many past Virginia governors honored the Civil War or the Confederacy.

In 1990, former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first black governor, a Democrat and a grandson of slaves, issued a proclamation praising both sides of the war and remembering "those who sacrificed in this great struggle."

Former Govs. George Allen and James S. Gilmore III, both Republicans, issued Confederate History Month proclamations. In 2000, Mr. Gilmore replaced that proclamation with one commemorating both sides of the Civil War -- a move that enraged the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, has refused to issue a gubernatorial decree on either side of the Civil War.

Mr. Kaine, another Democrat, would decline to issue a Confederate History and Heritage Month proclamation if he is elected governor, said his campaign spokeswoman, Delacey Skinner.

Then the Confederate apologists (such as yourself), said that slavery was not theft and that one was not harming slaves.(since they were in fact treated well) " Slavery is NOT theft. Read the Word before you preach it!

Ofcourse slavery is theft, you taking from people the fruit of their labor!

That is theft by any definition of the word.

"and that one was not harming slaves.(*IF* they were in fact treated well)" Again, who were the "many" you cite as "supporting slavery" (Note, you may want to actually READ my posts before you put me in that list. Same with any other person.)

The fact is you would not want to be slave, so why do you defend slavery?

You guys are so blinded for your lost cause, that you defend the undefendable, and attack the Founding Fathers and the Declaration of Independence itself rather then admit that the Confederacy was built on a racist premise, that the White man had a right to enslave the Negro.

The leaders of the Confederacy did not think slavery was going to die, that is why they wrote it explicity in their Constitution.

Morevover, no one thinks that slavery was the only isse in the War.

Slavery however was the key issue, without which there would have been a war.

The South thought enough of slavery to divide churches over it, the Democratic Party over it and even the nation over it.

If you're out to prove the Confederacy was right it would be better not to hide behind claims of even-handedness.

Amen

The North attacked the South.

Who fired the first shots?

(NOTE TO ALL: N-S himself ADMITTED that slavery was NOT the cause of the war on another thread.he stated that the WBTS was to "preserve the Union".))

Typcial double-talk.

The South divided the nation over slavery, the North went to war initially to preserve the Union.

I prefer Paleo-Confederate.

And why do you think it couldn't happen? In the history of this world, nations break-up, change boundaries, have revolutions, etc.....

Are you really that arrogant to think this country couldn't change?

"Ofcourse slavery is theft, you taking from people the fruit of their labor!"

Wel dang, I guess that means that anybody in construction is under slavery, because they can't use the buildings for their own private uses. Capitalism thus equals slavery by that loose definition.

The slaves get "compensated" (albeit poorly) for their labor with room and board. The defining aspect of "slavery" is that they have no freedom. Not owning stuff just makes them poor. Tons of people don't own stuff, despite work.

The fact is you would not want to be slave, so why do you defend slavery?

WTF? Do you just ignore my words after you post them then put your own words up instead? I'm not defending slavery! Quit saying I do! That's slanderous!

When did I argue that "cause" you hold to so much? The one about slavery.

If we believed such down here, don't you think we'd be arguing it?

Get your head out of that hole before you fart and die of noxious gasses.

I have work in 30 minutes, but I can say this:

It has been arguedon this thread by many others that the North in fact fired the first shots from that "innocent steam boat" floating down the Mississippi River. The one that was then shot at by Southern artillery.

If I can't find it soon, I'll leave you with the knowledge that it WAS addressed here. And that the verdict is "The North shot first"

"The South divided the nation over slavery, the North went to war initially to preserve the Union."

And King George went to war with the States for the SAME REASON.

Does preservation of a union make a war Constitutional? Or even moral?

"There was nothing 'freedom loving' about the slave holding South."

You are now talking about a group of Democrats that were in office. Now, please, tell me. Is it possible these democrats were lying then? Or that they came into their seats under the wrong pretenses?

Ever wonder why so many of us today are gun-enthusiests? It's because our pappy learned from his pappy that personal security was a sure route to political freedom.

What you are doing is using the elitetist's self-serving logic to argue against the common person's logic (the one's who did the fighting).

as i've said before, the so-called "collected writings" do NOT include anything that is other than hero-worship about the TYRANT.

when i was a grad student long ago, i was told that "you don't need to read those kind of things".

the worshipers at the feet of lincoln, the clay-footed plaster saint of damnyankeeland, do NOT want ANYBODY to know the truth.

in my particular case, i was FINALLY told that i could look at the documents, but only under the "close supervision of a staff member" and that i could not make copies of ANY document OR make notes on the content, without the consent of the "faculty senate". such "consent" is NEVER given.
