The leaders of the Confederacy did not think slavery was going to die, that is why they wrote it explicity in their Constitution.

Morevover, no one thinks that slavery was the only isse in the War.

Slavery however was the key issue, without which there would have been a war.

The South thought enough of slavery to divide churches over it, the Democratic Party over it and even the nation over it.
