Hi, gang,
I was a regular contributor to the Kerry Online Forum and am now a regular contributor to the Common Ground Common Sense forum. I am a liberal, but I'll be the first to admit, I don't have all the answers. In fact, many of hte questions that matter to me probably matter to you too. I'm concerned with questions about how to tame power, whether governmental or corporate. I'm concern with the rule of law and how we can get the powerful to take it seriously. I'm concerned with the erosion of civil liberties. And yes, I am concerned about some things you may associate with liberalism--social safety nets and taking care of those who fall through the institutional cracks.
I'm here because I think agreement is overrated and that critics can be your best friends: they keep you from getting sloppy or careless. At any rate, I think there are things I can learn from you. I don't expect you are all agreed on anything--I expect there is a lot of diversity of opinion here. If you are interested in what I have said over at Common Ground Common Sense, I'm using the same handle both places, and you should feel free to come over and look around.
Anyway, I'm new here. Anybody care to give me a tour?
Work to end immigration because we're out of room.
Roger V:
Name one "civil liberty" of yours that has been "eroded". In fact, I challenge you to define the term "civil liberty", because I would be willing to bet that you, like the vasy majority of liberals who spout this drivel, have never read the US Constitution. You probably believe that the term "separation of church and state" actually adheres in prohibiting the display of a Christmas Nativity Scene in a city hall or on the lawn of the White House. I'd like you to document a single instance in which one of the so-called "poor" in the US has been denied "health care" at a US hospital. Show us a documented instance where the "social safety net" has failed one of the "poor" in this country. These are all liberal "issues" that really have no basis in fact or reality.
But, welcome to FreeRepublic. Careful, though, if you hang around long enough, you might actually get an education and come over to the side of reality.
Merry Christmas!!!
For instance, I'm from PA and my take on Democrats is that they want to stick their hands deep down in my pockets, just like good ole Philly city boss Ed Rendell (now PA governor), who never met a tax he didn't like. He got in and our state income tax immediately went up.
Do you support the continued banditry of the Demopuke party against hardworking and productive citizens, in order to redistribute their wealth and buy votes from the Democratic base?
I do not use the word "liberal" to describe the thinking of people on the Left as a general rule. They are more aptly described as "statists" or even "totalitarians". On the various matters of constitutional rights and freedoms, those of us who agree with Our Founders are more appropriately described as "liberals" in that tradition. We recognize the inherent dignity of each individual as having been granted by God, our Creator, and we live and think accordingly.
Others have suggested that you may do well to perhaps go after your goal of understanding by taking things an issue at a time. That seems to be good advice if you are willing to set aside any pre-conceived notions and hold to a logical approach. Not just you, but all who are willing to learn, may just learn something.
Watching him carefully now......
He has made a few responses so we are in a holding pattern.
As long as you express you thoughts in a rational manner, there isn't a problem. If you come here to say Bush is Hitler, goodbye.
I hate it when liberals and lurkers post and run.
A for using capital letters and paragraphs. C- for spelling and grammar. (So I'm a tough grader; sue me!)
It is not too late to seek forgiveness.
Here's some advice..................
The best way to spread Christmas cheer..........

Is this part of a 12 step recovery program recommended by your therapist? If so, which step is it?
Tsk, tsk trisham. Pre-mature kittenization is not nice.
Actually, I haven't come here to defend something so much as to ask some questions and compare notes.

We're out of room? When did that happen?
Strange newbie..
If he really DOES believe in rule of law, then he should burn his Lib membership card.
Libs don't believe in rule of law.
They believe in majority mob opinion rule, and even then what they consider a 'majority' is five or six people in the room with them.
(For example: Kerry lost the election, and instead of accepting that they are not the majority opinion, the Libs instead claim we're all ignorant rednecks..)
roegerv has received many respectful, well thought out replies on this thread. Just wade through the others.
Lesson #1: Don't post vanities.
Saw that. Made a few but is kind of slow. I'm gonna move on.
