Savage: Impeach Bush over immigration plan

Conservative talk-radio star, author says amnesty is betrayal of country

In the latest indication President Bush is having problems with his conservative core political constituency, Michael Savage, one of talk radio's biggest stars, tonight called for the impeachment of President Bush over his plans to legalize millions of illegal aliens.

"This is the worst betrayal of our country in my lifetime," said Savage, whose program is heard on more than 350 stations with an audience reaching some 6 million. His book, "The Savage Nation," last year was No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller's list for five weeks. His follow-up, "The Enemy Within," out just one week, is already No. 8 on the list. Both were published by WND Books.

President Bush

Tonight Savage called Bush a liberal and described him as part of the "enemy within" that is destroying the nation.

Savage created the phrase "compassionate conservative" in 1994, a term picked up by Bush during his presidential campaign – a campaign supported by Savage.

"This is much more serious than dropping your pants for an intern," said Savage. "This is a policy that represents a danger to national security."

Savage is hardly alone in his strong feelings of opposition to Bush's proposal to offer legal status to illegal immigrants. A new ABC News poll finds 52 percent of the nation opposes an amnesty program for illegal immigrants from Mexico, while 57 percent oppose one for illegal immigrants from other countries. Both results are roughly the same as when the administration floated the idea two-and-a-half years ago.

But today in Monterrey, Mexico, Bush reaffirmed his support of the proposal, despite its unpopularity at home. He said it could help illegal immigrants "leave the shadows and have an identity."

At a joint press conference with Mexican President Vicente Fox, Bush warned that his government will not allow the existence in the United States of an underclass of illegal immigrants, but claimed again his proposal is not an amnesty. Amnesty, he said, would only promote the violation of the law and perpetuate illegal immigration.

Bush said his immigration proposal would benefit both the United States and Mexico as it recognizes the contribution of thousands of honest Mexicans who work in the United States.

For his part, Fox embraced Bush's proposal.

"What else can we wish?" Fox said at the news conference with the president.

In the U.S., the latest poll on the controversy shows at least twice as many Americans "strongly" oppose the proposal as strongly support it.

Opposition peaks in Bush's own party: Fifty-eight percent of Republicans oppose his immigration proposal for Mexicans, compared with 50 percent of Democrats. For illegal immigrants other than Mexicans, 63 percent of Republicans are opposed.

Bush reportedly will disclose more details of the plan in his State of the Union address Jan. 20.

Meanwhile, the National Border Patrol Council, which represents all 9,000 of the Border Patrol's non-supervisory agents, has told its members to challenge President Bush´s proposed guest-worker program, calling it a "slap in the face to anyone who has ever tried to enforce the immigration laws of the United States," the Washington Times reported today.

The agents were told in a letter from Vice President John Frecker that the proposal offered last week during a White House press conference "implies that the country really wasn't serious about" immigration enforcement in the first place.

"Hey, you know all those illegal aliens you risked 'life and limb' to apprehend? FAH-GED-ABOWD-IT," said Frecker, a veteran Border Patrol agent. "President Bush has solved the problem. Don't be confused and call this an 'amnesty,' even though those who are here illegally will suddenly become legal and will be allowed to stay here. The president assures us that it's not an amnesty," he said.

Last week Bush proposed the sweeping immigration changes that would allow the 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens thought to be in the United States to remain in the country if they have a job and apply for a guest-worker card. The immigrants could stay for renewable three-year periods, after which they could apply for permanent legal residence.

Savage cited a new report published in the City Journal by the Manhattan Institute suggesting there is a major crime wave in the U.S. caused by illegal immigration.

"Some of the most violent criminals at large today are illegal aliens," the report charges. "Yet in cities where the crime these aliens commit is highest, the police cannot use the most obvious tool to apprehend them: their immigration status. In Los Angeles, for example, dozens of members of a ruthless Salvadoran prison gang have sneaked back into town after having been deported for such crimes as murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and drug trafficking. Police officers know who they are and know that their mere presence in the country is a felony. Yet should a cop arrest an illegal gang-banger for felonious reentry, it is he who will be treated as a criminal, for violating the LAPD’s rule against enforcing immigration law."

The situation is similar, the report says in New York, Chicago, San Diego, Austin and Houston. These "sanctuary policies" generally prohibit city employees, including the cops, from reporting immigration violations to federal authorities, says the report.

"These people are destroying America," said Savage. "That's all I have to say on the subject. But you can talk about it. Talk about it while you can – while America is still a free country, because it's not going to last."

The war on terror is on. Long term plans are in place. A lack of Bush will not have any effect whatsoever on whether or not we continue blowing up goons from the middle east IMO.

He began one speech by addressing the audience as fellow "citizens of the world".

Thank you for posting this. It really brings home the fact that Bush is a globalist. This globalist philosophy is clearly antithetical to national sovereignty and the mandates of the U.S. Constitution. This is SCARY.

Keep sounding the Alarm.

I respect Savage's opinion but he doesn't say how we pick the lettuce and grapes w/o Mexicans. Soapboxes are great if they address all the sides of the story. Should we be locking up farmers who hire illegals??

Then you clearly haven't been listening to any of the Democrats.

I agree with those who say Savage is passionate which is what gets him in trouble. I didn't hear him say this but I've heard him say worse and figured he was just blowing off steam...it's live radio...How often I've said something and later cooled down. How grateful I am I'm not 'usually' (cept when I write on F.R. *smile*) speaking to thousands of people at once. He's also suffered the loss of his Mother so my heart goes out to him...

I'm still voting for Bush in '04.

90% of the housing framer carpenters, sheet rock hangers, landscapers,...are all illegal immigrants that are stealing jobs away from our own underclass, and thus pushing our own poor workers into deeper poverty.

And in a generation, many of these foreign laborers who are ambitionus will be running construction and landscaping companies. With enforcement, we have entry jobs for citizens, some of whom will learn, advance, and become prosperous.

That figures.

Of course it does. Texas is far more conservative than any of those other states. Michael Savage is no conservative.

He began one speech by addressing the audience as fellow "citizens of the world". Now where have we heard that before?

HT, they don't care. Can't you see that? They have been so brainwashed, so beaten down by the liberals that they have begun using the same arguments, the same tired playbook and the same rhetoric.

"This is the worst betrayal of our country in my lifetime,"

Clinton. China. Security Leaks.

Carter. North Korea. Nuclear Program.

Oh forget it. I don't need to go on.

I STRONGLY disagree with this program, too, but it hardly rises to impeachable levels. Clinton would have made the amnesty an Executive Order, not launched a trial balloon.

I don't listen to Savage any more, and haven't in a long time, but this is just ridiculous. Sheesh.

"No president has enforced the borders against illegals in the last 20 years."

Correct

That's not exactly "an invasion."
Incorrect

Anyway, these people are working here, aren't they?

Incorrect. Let me dispell a myth for you real quick with facts. 35% of LEGAL immigrants are on welfare or some form of government subsidy. The cliche that oooo these people are working oooo they are working. Some yes some not but of those that come in 1)pay NO federal income taxes as they make below 24,000/yr. 2)Are uneducated and underskille. 3)Carry no medical insurance. 3)Require federal assistance via bilingual education etc etc. I could go on and on about this and show you the LEGAL immigrants cost this country more then they put in. But what is the use.

"They're keeping your vegetable prices low. "

Ends justify the means argument.

"I see Bush's plan as a way to initiate a discussion on this subject."

Yes and No. I see it as more of another Programme used to get more votes.

"It will likely not be what he wants, nor will it be the full amnesty that Democrats want. "

He should never have proposed such an outlandish plan. It should have been fine tuned.

Something's got to be done, and he's making an attempt, short of deporting 10 million people, which the American people WILL NOT STAND FOR."

Really? Can you speak for "The American people?"
Polls proove you false.

"...Or will you, as I suspect, find some other reason to vote against him?.."

And there you have it, in a nutshell. I suspect exactly the same thing. The Bush haters will never change, they always think that a president rules by decree, everything is his fault, and that he can govern by only giving his own base what they demand. Bush, if you all will remember, said during his campaign that he would be president of ALL the people, and stressed compassionate conservatism. In balance, his good far outweighs his bad, and even though I disagree with some of the legislation he's signed, he mostly believes domestic policy should be ruled by congress. Want a more conservative agenda? Complain to your representatives and senators. Want a more liberal agenda? Vote libertarian, independent, etc., and watch the country go to hell. You Bush bashers have completely forgotten the Clinton years, or you wouldn't be so quick to run away from the Republican Party. The reason we don't have a president who's conservative enough to suit you, is because that kind of candidate is totally unelectable, and if by some miracle did get in office, would never get a bill through congress. Stop being so simple minded.

Something's got to be done, and he's making an attempt, short of deporting 10 million people, which the American people WILL NOT STAND FOR.

The President isn't even deporting Illegals with standing deportation orders that haven't appeared as ordered. Doesn't seem hard to figure out that all Illegals are flight risks, particularly those who've lost their cases. Yet Illegals facing deportation orders aren't taken into custody pending deportation.

There are upwards of 400,000 individuals who have received final deportation orders that are hiding in our communities. Their appeals have run out, and those orders tell them, “it’s time to go.” But, the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement can’t find them! What’s worse, 80,000 of those people have criminal convictions, just like Miguel Angelo Gordoba! They were in the hands of our law enforcement. Can you imagine opening the doors of our prisons and letting 80,000 criminals run back into the streets? Well folks, that’s exactly what has happened with these 80,000 criminal aliens.

What’s more, 3,800 of those people with final deportation orders are from countries with a known Al-Qaeda presence.
Statement of the Honorable Charlie Norwood
The CLEAR Act of 2003
July 9, 2003

Compare these figures to those of two years ago...

The Justice Department's decision to track down and deport 6,000 Middle Eastern aliens who've been ordered to leave the country attracted howls of protest from all the usual places earlier this week. The government has a list of more than 300,000 deportable immigrants.
Deportation Disorder
National Review Online
John J. Miller & Ramesh Ponnuru | January 10th, 2002

These deportable Illegals from two years ago, in the aftermath of September 11th, are mostly still here, including tens of thousands of hardened, violent criminals, and thousands of Illegals from Al Qaeda nations.

If the terror attacks were insufficient to compel President Bush to carry out even the minimum enforcement of the standing deportation orders, then he sure as heck ain't gonna deport any legalized-Illegals down the road.

How do you imagine the American people would feel about that, if they knew?

I see your point.

I remember his defenind the original gay remark althoough I never heard the remark he originally made. I can't really recall what he said about it.

Do you remember Alan Burke? He ran a TV talk show years ago. He was an exceptionally irrascible liberal who was really obnoxious to his conservative guests and also to members of the audience who were allowed to come to a microphone and question him or his guest. Burke frequently wnet down the microphone himself to get n the face of conservatives who particularly riled him. I remember one episode in which he did this where they cut the film! The audience member he was harassing actually CLOCKED him!!
(Burke was a beared old goat with a cigar or cigarette who should have known better than to face to face bait people the way he did. He got was coming to him.)

They had another guy on around the same time who was a conservative, Joe Pyne. He ran a similar show, but Pyne never got up to confront audience members - he was a parapalegic veteran who was wounded in the service. I remember his favorite retort was "Go gargle with razor blades!!"

The point is, we shouldnj't confuse genuine political mind and spokesmen with entertainers. Nobody takes Savage seriously. He's entertainment. If liberals bring him up, laugh in their faces. He's irrelevant, politically speaking, and they know it. The Libs have their own guys like him on the radio. Since I don't need the aggrevation I don't listen to them.

I have had numerous FReepers tell me they are opposed to immigration entirely.

That doesn't make them non-christian. Walls were built in cities of old to keep out the untrusted and it was not refuted by Christ. Libertarians may have some radical views but I don't you can call then non-christian for opposing legal immigration.
