HONEST ABE DAY

http://www.netins.net/showcase/creative/lincoln.html His life was what America was all about. An average boy, born on this day in 1809 on a farm in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky, was able to become the 16th President of the United States.

He studied hard, by the light of a fireplace, to become first, a lawyer, then a statesman. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most revered U.S. Presidents, served his country during one of the most turbulent times in its history. The term of his presidency (1861-1865) encompassed the Civil War between the States. His Emancipation Proclamation made on January 1, 1863 to free slaves; and his Gettysburg Address given on November 19, 1863 at the site of one of the most famous battlegrounds of the Civil War are still held high as classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals.

President Lincoln was also responsible for one of the most popular holidays in the U.S.: Thanksgiving Day. He proclaimed that the last Thursday of November shall be observed as such. And so it was, and still is.

Abraham Lincoln lived during tragic times and died a tragic death. While watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Washington’s Ford Theatre, he was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died a few hours later. Lincoln was the first U.S. President to be assassinated.

‘Honest Abe’ earned his nickname when he was practicing law in Illinois. It was his unfailing honesty that made him known throughout the state. When convinced that his client was right, he could argue the case strongly. If not convinced, he was hardly powerful in his client’s defense. Lincoln would persuade clients to settle out of court even though that meant he would receive a lesser fee. And, when this was not possible, he could argue a case equally as well before a judge or before an uneducated jury. To Abe Lincoln, being a lawyer or President meant seeking the truth for client or for country.

We got clobbered this morning. In a matter of 2-3 hours we got about 16 inches and the forecast is for another foot or more tonight.

the church leaders of all denominations have let the liberals and PC nuts take control

I would like to suggest that not all denominations are liberal. The Presbyterian Church in America, the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church are by no means liberal.

If anyone is looking for a conservative church denomination, I would recommend visiting and prayerfully considering a PCA church.

One of the military experts Fox uses mentioned the missile launchers last night on Greta's show. Then last night there was a thread about it.

The military guy also mentioned black helicopters flying around,F-16s resuming air patrol over DC, and other items and activities he declined to specify.

Other than that, haven't heard a darn thing!

One thing the PCA has strongly in their favor to keep them conservative is that they are seen as a conservative alternative to the PCUSA. In places where there are both churches, liberals will choose to go to the PCUSA and conservatives to the PCA. Their history, at least their recent history, is very much in support of conservative evangelicalism as opposed to a watered-down version of the Bible and social agenda.

I've always felt, as you do, that good doctrine will lead to social activism that will make a difference in the world. A lot of churches get into trouble when they ditch orthodoxy and try to have only good intentions. They soon get lost without their roadmap to tell them where they're going and how to get there.

This is the same dicotomy which plaqued the early church. Paul and James went through the same discussion. The upshot of it seems to be, you have to have the relationship with Jesus FIRST and then as a love-response to Him, you do His works.

Anything else is doing works to try to earn salvation. That won't get you to heaven.

Yes...16 inches... almost to my knee. When I got up this morning ...about 2 inches on the deck. About 8:30 it came down so hard I couldn't see anything out the window.

Sarah was to be at work at 11:00. We got there an hour late. On the way ..within a 6 mile span..there were at least 15 cars off the road. It was terrible.

The wind was blowing quite hard so most of the snow while I was snowblowing..went down my neck. Brrr!!!

So you'll be returning to get her? Be careful, lysie! All our new snow arrived overnight...it's windy, and the stuff drifted some, but the streets are in fine shape.

Here's what Andrew Sullivan has to say about the latest OBL tape:

I learn three things from the latest morsel of half-crazed religious rhetoric from Osama bin Laden. The first is that he is perfectly willing to ally himself with Saddam. The critical section is as follow:

And it doesn't harm in these conditions the interest of Muslims to agree with those of the socialists in fighting against the crusaders, even though we believe the socialists are infidels. For the socialists and the rulers have lost their legitimacy a long time ago, and the socialists are infidels regardless of where they are, whether in Baghdad or in Aden.

And this fighting about to take place resembles the fight with the Romans earlier and the collusion of interest doesn't harm, for the Muslims' fight against the Romans was due to the collusion of the interests with the Persians.

This isn't exactly a Hitler-Stalin pact. It's more like the German-Japan axis of the last world war. OBL is the ideological purist; but Saddam is a critical ally of the Islamofascists against the West, against any notion of Western freedom in that part of the world. More important, Iraq provides a base - and far more lethal weapons - for the continuing war. The enemy of Osama's enemy is his friend. Only experts in the Middle East could have missed that one.

Thanks, Molly. I'll be careful. I usually take the less traveled back roads...put the Jeep in 4 wheel drive and off I go. :-) I don't press my luck.

The sun is shining right now....go figure. :-)

Apparently he doesn't question the tape's authenticity. I'm not sure what to think and would need more evidence to decide, but here's what Mark Steyn said about it in an interview.
First, an audio recording is the easiest form of evidence to fake - easier than paper, easier than video. I got my first job in radio from faking an aircheck in my bedroom when I was 17. So if the only recorded evidence of your identity in the last 14 months is an audio tape, that suggests either you're dead or in too poor condition even for the most artfully edited video appearance.

Secondly, the US Government said they were "almost certain" it was bin Laden. That Swiss institute said they were "almost certain" it wasn't. In this instance, the Swiss are the disinterested party. With everything that's come out since 9/11, I have no great confidence in the alleged expertise of Federal agencies. It's also clear that the Bush Administration is in no great hurry to pronounce bin Laden dead: true, the Dems keep teasing them about the fact that he's still running around out there, but that's less of a problem than declaring him deceased and having Chirac, Schroder and the rest of the gang saying, "Congratulations, you got your man. War's over. Everybody go home."

Thirdly, he isn't actually "running around". Since 9/11, al-Qaeda have been unable to pull off any kind of follow-up in a western country: their only successes have been in more loosely policed environments, such as Tunisia and Bali. That suggests the US was able to accomplish a serious degradation of their infrastructure during the Afghan campaign, and border vigilance is doing a lot of the rest. The way to respond to that would be for al-Qaeda to encourage a few more freelance operations by western Muslims, like the LAX guy and the shoebomber. After all, the ideological supporters of bin Ladenism vastly outnumber the formal card-carriers. But even the shoebomber types have fallen silent. If ever there was a time for a video call to jihad, these last eight or nine months have been it. OBL hasn't done it because he can't. Audio cassettes aren't going to cut it: even al-Jazeera wants better visuals.

I didn't make myself clear in my earlier post ...... let me try again.

I was a Methodist all of my life until a few months ago. Our Methodist church in the small town we lived in for years met our needs .... both spiritually and socially ....... but that had as much to do with it being a small town as anything else.

Since we moved here we have not found a Methodist Church with which we were comfortable.

..... So last year we started attending a PCA church ... and joined it a few months later. We are still in awe of how much different it is. We leave worship each week knowing that we have heard the Word of God, that we have worshipped the Lord, and that we have been challenged in our Christian growth.

In both Sunday school and church services, evil is called evil (and sometimes it is actually named x42!). There is no ambivalence or beating around the bush on such issues as abortion. As Jemian said, the emphasis is on relationship with Christ but it is clear that a right relationship with Him will lead to works. Opportunities for such service are presented but are certainly not pushed upon anyone.

True. LOL!

It's probably accurate to say that the administration isn't in a rush to declare the man dead, but I don't believe the tape was concocted by the CIA, either, as one caller to Limbaugh suggested yesterday.

Sounds like my Church, no words barred there, ever. 'The Evil One' is referred to Satan -- and the ex prez. I was a Southern Baptist all my life until about 6 years ago until I found the church I go to now. It is a Assembly of God Church and it is a church where Christ is Christ and the devil is the devil, no lost words being PC at all.
