"I hate to think what it is "down south".

"Hell" comes to mind. I had to make another 3 hour drive today without AC. It must have been 100 degrees! If it wasn't, it wasn't far off and it sure felt like it.

I had two very good landlords in Colorado, to the same house...one sold to the other and we got to stay. I guess I got spoiled because the ones I have had here haven't been worth a d*mn!

For Decades, Politicians Shied from Public Shows of Faith

MEXICO CITY, JULY 31, 2002 (Zenit.org).- When President Vicente Fox kissed John Paul II's ring during Tuesday's welcome ceremony, he broke a decades-old taboo in Mexican politics.

I wonder how the teenager was at the scene? Did her father or her stepmother bring her to the hotel?

Slain orthodontist's ex-wife sues over estate
Associated Press

GALVESTON - The mother of a teen-age girl who watched her stepmom repeatedly run over and kill her orthodontist father is seeking a court order to freeze the father's assets so his estate isn't depleted to pay for the stepmom's defense.

"I saw my step-mother, Clara Harris, kill my father, David L. Harris, by hitting him with her Mercedes Benz," 16-year-old Lindsey Harris said in an affidavit attached to a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of herself and her 3-year-old twin brothers, Brian and Bradley Harris.

In the lawsuit, David Lynn Harris' ex-wife, Debra Shank, said her daughter tried to stop Clara Harris from killing her father but "despite her efforts ... was forced to witness the death of her father."

Shank asked in the lawsuit filed Wednesday that a temporary restraining order be issued to freeze David Harris' estate so Clara Harris, who has been charged with murder, cannot benefit from it. Shank said David Harris' estate should go to his three children, not its sole heir, Clara Harris.

"This court must act to stop defendant Harris from becoming unjustly enriched by her wrongful acts," said the lawsuit which was obtained by The Galveston County Daily News.

Prosecutors in Harris County say Clara Harris intentionally and knowingly murdered her husband of 10 years in a Houston-area hotel parking lot July 24 after confronting him and another woman at the hotel.

Lawyer: Blake's Wife Was Warned
Thu Aug 1, 8:56 PM ET
By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP Special Correspondent

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A recorded phone call shows that months before Robert Blake's wife Bonny Lee Bakley was killed, the son of actor Marlon Brando angrily warned her: "You're lucky somebody ain't out there to put a bullet in your head."

The exchange with Christian Brando was released by Blake defense lawyer Harland Braun, who cited it as evidence of Bakley's ability to provoke people, as well as a flawed investigation. Blake has been charged in the shooting.

Did Brando go back to a resteraunt to get a gun he left by accident?

Here's another couple of losers on their way down the social ladder, almost reaching the depravity depths of the dastardly dental duo.

Couple stab each other in Channelview trailer
Associated Press
A man and his live-in girlfriend stabbed one another during a domestic squabble at their Channelview mobile home Wednesday night.

The couple, whose names have not yet been released, are recovering from their wounds at Memorial Hermann Hospital, where the woman is in critical condition, the man fair.

The fight occurred just after 9 p.m. Wednesday at the couple's home in a trailer park on Ridlon just off Sheldon, said Harris County Sheriff's Department deputies.

After the pair injured one another, officials said both staggered to a neighbor's home for help.

Hard liquor is only sold in state-owned liquor stores in Washington.

State to pay $185,000 in drowning case

Thursday, August 1, 2002

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES

The state has agreed to pay $185,000 to the family of an Eastside teen who drowned at a Seattle beach park after a night of drinking.

Lloyd Edwards and Sylvia Van Tunen contend the state was responsible for selling liquor to a friend of their 17-year-old son, Jonathan George Edwards.

The Sammamish High School student was found dead in February 2000 at Magnolia Beach Park, where investigators say he likely drowned when the tide came in.

The Eastside couple is still pressing their case in King County Superior Court against their son's friend, Brett Van Der Vliet, accusing him of abandoning their son at the park.

Edwards was believed to be drunk and wasn't dressed for the cold night.

It would be illegal for Brando to own a gun:

In 1990, Marlon Brando's oldest son, shot and killed Dag Drollett, Christian's half sister Cheyenne Brando's boyfriend, at Marlon Brando's Los Angeles home. Following a high-profile investigation, Christian, then 32, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and gun charges. He was released on parole in 1996.

My daddy sends me the strangest stuff!

An old lady, quite delicate and elegant, especially in her
speech, was planning several weeks vacation in Florida with her
husband and wanted to make sure the camp grounds were fully
equipped.

She didn't know just how to ask the manger about the toilet
facilities. She decided that she couldn't use the word "toilet"
in her letter to the manager. So after studying about it for
some time, she thought the old-fashioned title "bathroom commode"
sounded good.

But, maybe he would think that she was a bit forward, so she
tore up the letter and started all over again. Referring to the
toilet, in her final letter to the manager she asked if the
campgrounds had a B.C.

Well, the manager had no idea what she was talking about, so he
showed the letter to several friends. They couldn't figure out
what she meant either.

Finally, they came to the conclusion that she must mean
did the campgrounds have a Baptist Church.

So, when he answered her letter he said,

"Dear Madame,
I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I am
pleased to tell you that we do have a B.C.

It is located just one mile North of the camp. It will seat 250
people at one time. I admit that it is quite a distance away if
you go regularly.

You might be interested to know that there is a supper planned
to make money to buy more seats. They will have them in the
basement of the B.C.

The last time my wife and I went was six years ago. It was so
crowded that we had to stand up the whole time we were there.

I would like to say that it pains me very much not to be able to
go more regularly, but it is surely no lack of desire on my
part.

As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort, especially
in cold weather.

Some people take their lunch and make a day of it. They arrive
early and stay late.

If you do decide to come here, perhaps I could go with you the
first time you go. I could sit beside you and introduce you to
the others.

Remember, this is a friendly community."

The state must have a better history of "settling." Hey, why not? It's just taxpayers' money anyway.... Somehow the taxpayers aren't mentioned in the headline or the article.

Looky here, Mo! The bad publicity was just a result of a "misunderstanding" *L*

SAN ANTONIO - Cable customers in San Antonio whose converter boxes were damaged by flooding won't have to pay for them after all.

A misunderstanding led some cable employees to mistakenly tell customers they would be charged for the $300 boxes, said Kevin G. Kidd, president of Time Warner Cable San Antonio.

Kidd on Wednesday said flood victims' questions were to have been handled by an executive response team that was instructed not to charge for any damages resulting from floodwaters.

"Clearly some (customers) didn't get through to the executive response team and were handled by the normal day-to-day policy," Kidd said in today's editions of the San Antonio Express-News.

An interesting list of inventions - past and future:

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/metropolitan/1517357

SAN ANTONIO - A prolific inventor who helped develop products such as Liquid Paper and clumping cat litter has died at the age of 72.

William A. "Bill" Mallow died Tuesday at a San Antonio hospital of acute leukemia.

The polymer chemist spent nearly 40 years with Southwest Research Institute, where he worked on a variety of projects, from tiles for the space shuttle to improving the silicone rubber skin covering on the robotic dinosaurs in the Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and figuring out how to remove the peanut butter from the molds at M&M candy factories.

Liquid Paper, the correction fluid, was invented by San Antonio native Bette Nesmith Graham -- mother of Monkees star Michael Nesmith -- but Southwest Research helped refine the product at her request.

The cat litter, known as Scoop Away Clean, allows clumps of urine and solid waste to be removed daily, leaving the rest of the box fresh.

More recently, Mallow, who retired from Southwest Research in 1998 but remained a technical adviser, was working on a gel for the U.S. Marine Corps. The gel, called the Mobility Denial System, can be sprayed on everything from asphalt to windows of buildings.

Anyone who walks on it will fall, and vehicles will slip and slide. The gel, which could be deployed in 2003 or 2004, likely will be used to thwart enemy attacks on embassies and government buildings and for crowd control.

Mallow also worked on a biocidal coating that destroys infectious viruses, fungi and bacteria. It went on the market earlier this year....
