he got to the swimming hole, dived in, hit bottom, and split his head, and had to be taken to the hospital...poor Helen, never got into the water...

what a punchline
first dad got the cookies and crackers
then dad got the icecream
then dad got the waffles
then dad split his head

upshot of all stories is Helen gets cheated out of all treats
rofl
I love this story

I forgot another thing that happened to Helen..one time she was coming home from school, and she used to cut through the gang way of a neighbors house on one street, and that gang way led to where she was living....

The neighbor lady was sitting on her porch, and she told Helen, "You dont live there anymore"...apparently my grandmother made a move when my dad and Helen went to school...she told my dad, of course, because he was so extra special, but she never told Helen that they were moving...

It was just a few doors down from where they lived before, but it was just that fact that my grandmother never told Helen...when Helen finally got to the newer house, delivered by the neighbor, my dad was already there...

Poor Helen, the family moved, and no one told her...

I'm not surprised Helen and your dad always loved each other and helped each other
I don't remember my mom favoring my brother over me when we were kids
but now
as Bill said ''I think your mom forgets you exist''
yet yesterday when I was troubled and called my brother
there are no words for how understanding, kind, loving, helpful my brother was
we had gone our own way in recent years, after having been so close as kids
but when I needed help yesterday, no one could have been kinder

I dont know what was up with my grandmother....she did dote on my dad, and gave Helen a hard time...

Yet, when Helen got married during the 40s, and she and her new hubby got married back east, Helens hubby wanted to move to California...grammies husband had been dead for some time...so Helen told Grammie she could come and live with her and her new hubby in California, if she wanted to...

So grammie moved out to California with Helen and her new hubby, and that is where she lived for the rest of her life, except for her year long jaunts back east to care for great grammie, and her months long stays with our family....

My auntie Helen, she sure got the short end of the stick, too often..but she looks back on all of that now, and just laughs...it was all so weird...

prolly Helen doted on her big brother too
and I bet your dad was swell to her despite his tricks on her
Helen may have thought it was natural to invite her mom to live with her
like all the members of your dad's family, an extraordinary level-headedness combined with charity of heart
is blended
Helen is a peach isnt she

I am just glad that your family was there to help you...there are so many families, where the various members are at odds with each other, and dont even speak to each other anymore...and often this is over matters, that were not that big to begin with, but have been allowed to fester...

To me, family is everything in the world....everyone does something that maybe other family members dont like, or dont approve of...but above all, family should remember that they are family, and tied by blood...I think that means something...

I know of people who have cut off all ties with their children for reasons that to me are really ridiculous...and I think that the parents suffer and the children, even tho they are adults, suffer also...

Life on this earth is so really very very short, and too short to be taken up with disagreements, and arguements, and nit picking, and such....

Well, anyway, thats how I look at it...

I have had ups and downs with both my mom and brother
ever since I told them I was new age
and what my new beliefs were
I had to tell my mother, cause after my dad went to Heaven I wanted our relationship to be real
I didnt realize my brother would disrespect me when I told him
(I was first born, and 5 years older than he is)
I think it is ok to have bumpy times
but I agree with you, these are our most important relationships
and no effort is too great, to bring them to fruition

Well, you are right, my dad would do anything for aunt Helen...when my brother and I were in college, and tuition payments for my parents were difficult, and money was really scarce, a terrible thing happened to aunt Helen...

Her husband disappeared and they could not find him...he had not been physically well and had to take a medical leave of absence from his job...then his mind started to get worse, and grammie and Helen began to be afraid that he was having a mental breakdown...

Then he disappeared...they scoured all over on their small ranch and could not find him...finally they brought a work honor crew in from some local prison, and they found him, in a shallow grave that he had apparently dug beforehand, and he shot himself and fell into the grave....

Aunt Helen called my dad in Chicago, told him what happened, but told my dad not to come out to California, as it would be so expensive for him to do so,(plane fare, time off from work, etc)...Helens older boy was in India, in the Peace Corps, and she refused to inform him of what had happened, because she did not want him to interrupt his Peace Corps obligations, and there was nothing he could do...

Helen also had two other teenagers at home to cope with...but she made my dad promise not to come out for the funeral, she would manage on her own...my dad promised, and finished talking to her...

Then, I remember it so well, dad could not get up from his chair...he just sat there, mulling things over...then he told us he was going to Cal, for aunt Helen, no matter the cost...he called her back, and said he had to go back on his promise, he was coming out there...

Thank goodness he did go out there..Helen was a wreck, her older son was in India, and the two teenagers at home were devastated...my dad was like a rock, and took over the arrangements, and gave great comfort to Helen and her two children...The son in India, continued on with his Peace Corps time, never knowing what happened to his dad, until he returned to USA...he was at first mad at my aunt for not telling him right away, but he grew to understand why she did it that way....

Many, many years later, when my dad was sick and dying from cancer, my cousin Steven, who was one of the two teenagers at home with Helen when their dad died, lived about 10 miles from my parents...and he used to come down almost every single day, and sit with my dad for a few hours a day, giving me and Helen a break from caring for him and my mom....

Steven told me, it was the very least he could do, as my dad had done so much for him, when his own dad died, and my dad went to personal financial strain to be able to help Helen and her kids when they needed it....

Family love, is the greatest there is...

lol I bought two cartons yesterday
when my bank card was declined, I knew I had to do something fast
I called that bank today and they said I owe them 25 dollars
I have a little in another bank (I used that card for the cigs)
but not very much there either
I told my brother ''it has become very suspenseful for me when I use my debit card now''
I didn't tell him bout cigarettes
cause he and my mom do not approve of smoking
and vote for higher cig taxes to discourage smokers from smoking
they do not realize they are being used by government who just uses us cig smokers as gravy train

Thanks Habs..he was a fine man, loved by so many people...when he died, he broke my heart...but I had so many, many phone calls and letters from people who knew him, especially from his long life in Chicago....and what better tribute, that people did remember him as a kind man, who looked at the whole of life as an adventure, and went out of his way make life better and easier for others, if he could....

He once wrote a poem, about a year before his death...just a short little thing...but in it, he states, that when his time comes, he is ready, because to him, dying only opened the door to more adventures...so I always to try imagine dad galivanting around eternity, looking for new ways to amuse himself...

rofl I told Merrill Lynch on the phone today
''I'm mad at you cause you helped yourself to $500 of my money when my checks went bouncey in March
I dont really want to give you the $25 I owe you now, but I will''
I said ''please close my account, I will deposit my mom's check in the credit union''

You remind me of myself sometimes with my debit card...I use at at the supermarket, and close my eyes and squint, when waiting for the approval thingey to come up...

Heck, tho, one time it would not come up with approval...and I knew there was money in there...man, I was sweatin...so then they tried another machine..and it still would not work...then they used my card like a credit card instead of a debit card, and it worked...

Came to find out, that I had enough money in the account, but for some reason, my bank had some odd malfunction in their computer, and kept ringing up disapproval whether you had money there or not....

But I still close my eyes, every time I use that card...
