Homeschoolers Forum
TxBec | 07/23/2002 | TxBec

I have been thinking lately it would be nice to have a thread (maybe even a forum later?) for the homeschooling families, because you know how many of us there are. This would not replace us pinging each other with all the great articles we find. It would be a place where we could discuss what curriculum we use, vent when needed, share our successes, compare notes, alert each other to cool things we find on the internet, and vent some more. I'm sure we all have found other sites with forums that we use, but since FReepers are such a cool breed, where better to start up a forum? What do you think?

Got the go-ahead from JR/Diotima to possibly start a FR Homeschool Chapter. The application requires 2-4 chapter leaders. Any volunteers? FReepmail me if you want to look at the application. : )

Just wanted to thank you again for the pings. You can keep pinging me, TxBec. I don't post on this thread very often, but I do read it and find all the links very helpful.

I went easy on my kids (and on myself) this summer - according to my husband, TOO easy...lol. And I shouldn't be lurking and posting so much on FR to begin with. But, oh, well, now I have the 2002-2003 curriculum designed almost completely for the six-year-old and the four-year-old. And we'd better get cracking soon.

Looking forward to the FR Homeschool Chapter (whatever that is. Sorry to sound so naive, but what does that mean, by the way?)

Can I be added to the homeschool ping list also?
Thanks!
For AR homeschoolers we have a messageboard:)

We also have a forum called crossing state lines so that we can keep up and hopefully join (if invited) homeschool activities that are near those that live close to state lines.

Oh you're very welcome. School started today for us, but the boys were with their dad, so tomorrow is OUR first day officially doing "school" together. Obviously, between work and them, you probably won't get pinged to death anymore (for a while anyway) : ) LOL

found some more links.

Today we did the cave painting lesson from Paula's Archives>Of course, these being geared to 4th/5th graders, I had to "sophisticate" it a bit, so we searched over the net for cave paintings, then located the sites on the atlas and timelined them. Here are two of the sites we came up with that really were interesting..

Baja, Calif

Lascaux, France

Excerpt from THSC
"BACK TO SCHOOL CALL VOLUME AT THSC

As the public schools and home schools have been gearing up for the beginning of a new school year, the number of phone calls to the THSC office have increased dramatically! Some districts have stated to potential home school parents that the “laws have changed” concerning home schooling or that the parents are required to submit the districts’ forms before the students can be withdrawn from the schools. NO education laws have changed, as the state legislature has not been in session for the whole year of 2002."

If you are in TX, the THSC advises not to go in person to the school or deal with the officials. Simply send a certified letter of your intent to homeschool, that is all that is required. If they respond requesting anything, you forward their reply to the THSC. They will handle the response.

Anyone using Singapore math? How do you all like it?

We used Saxon for the first year of our homeschooling but switched to Singapore after that. Singapore Math is a GREAT program. It's also very challenging, but it will teach your kids math better than anything out there.
