Embattled Rep. Ilhan Omar’s ex-husband and rumored brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, referred to himself as a “gay man” in an academic paper published earlier this year.
Elmi’s self-described sexual orientation adds to the mounting evidence that his 2009 marriage to Omar was a sham to obtain legal immigration status for her alleged brother.
“As a gay man of the East African diaspora, my fieldwork was never neutral,” Elmi, a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, wrote in an August 2026 paper titled, “Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya.”
“It was a space shaped by tension, risk, intimacy, and vulnerability,” he continued. “While navigating the challenges of ethnographic research, I immersed myself in the lived experiences of the people I spoke with, while also negotiating my own safety and the complexities of my identity.”
The paper was first-reported by the Daily Caller.
Elmi came to live with Omar and her first husband, Ahmed Hirsi, in Minnesota in 2009, The Post reported Wednesday.
A friend of Hirsi described Elmi as an “extremely feminine Somali guy” who “was walking around in tight female clothing, which is heavily frowned upon in the Somali community.”

One of my co-workers is from Wisconsin and he’s a serious Brewers fan - life-long, as is his sweet wife. He was over the moon today. He’s one of the nicest people at my work, so I was rooting for them too.

We took Mom - who is a DIE HARD Brewers fan - to a game on Mother’s Day. They really did it up nice for all of the ‘Moms’ in attendance. *HEART*
‘Mis’ did his 100+ MPH pitches that day and we beat the Yankees! It was awesome. :)
I’ve been going to games in what was once ‘County Stadium’ since I was a toddler. Grandma Anita, Mom’s Mom, was an even MORE rabid fan than my Mom. Many a Mother’s Day we were in our snowmobile suits in the stands. That wind is a wall of ICE off of Lake Michigan in May. No fancy retractable ‘roof’ back then.
So, SO many great memories there. I kinda wish they could’ve screwed around and brought the final WIN back home to Milwaukee, but I’ll take it!
And no riots and nothing set on fire in Milwaukee. Go figure. :)
There’s no joy here in the Bay Area.
