The No. 1 Exercise That Everyone Over 50 Should Do Daily, According to a Physical Therapist
NBC News ^ | Oct. 6, 2026 | Aryelle Siclait

Most people will experience back pain. In fact, two-thirds of us will deal with it if we don’t already, said Karena Wu, doctor of physical therapy, Start TODAY trainer and orthopedic physical therapist.

As we age, our back issues will only get more challenging because with getting older comes mobility changes. You might notice a shift in your ability to walk and move freely, and maintain balance and strength, she said during a TODAY segment.

So, “restoring mobility and maintaining mobility is super important,” she added. And one move in particular can make all the difference.

Same!

There are people/peers all around me with back, knee, shoulder, hip problems. I’m not going to scoff at luck and genetics, but I personally assign the fact that I also have so few problems to the fact that I lift weights and ride the bike (hard).

Also, I have a desk job. But not only do I get up dozens of times in short periods, and also have responsibilities that have physical requirements, when I am sitting, I often adjust postures. Sometimes I sit forward with arms on desk, sometimes leaned back in the chair like a slouch, and sometimes I sit upright with elbows hanging and back arched.

In short, I find the idea that I need to do some standing crab stretch for my back completely unnecessary.

People need to get throw away the bags of potato chips and stop sitting on the couch for 4 hours at a time... and like God Luvs America suggests, challenge your body!

...my legs going numb and extreme pain, doctor sent me for an MRI... they told me I needed emergency spinal surgery to remove the pieces of something pinching my spinal cord. Problem is, when I woke up that morning ALL MY PROBLEMS WERE GONE and have never come back, never been better! go figure??

I suspect that whatever was pinching your spinal cord was metallic and the MRI machine pulled it far enough away from your spine that it no longer pinched the nerves. That it didn't tear out of you points to it being nickel, copper, stainless, or something else non-ferrous.

LOL!
The number one exercise in the bible stretches and works the back and keeps you from catching diseases (unless your spouse is unfaithful).

The only time I have back issues is when I pick up sticks out of the yard. 40 minutes of bending over repeatedly to pick up sticks leaves my lower back howling. It goes away in about a half hour.

Great to hear and good for you!!!

i have knee and hip issues but its inflammation from over use....i previously had meniscus surgery on both knees and i have a torn labrum in each hip- but the doctor does not want to do surgery...the only reason i swim was i had to cut back on my runs as they were destroying me knees..it really flares up when i do yard work and i then take meloxicam which knocks it out in a day or two...

Evidently I'm not the only one saying it. LOL

Not the Bee -- Report: Married couples that attend church regularly have the most sex and the most satisfying sex

In fact, we find that the only Americans who have avoided the country's "sex recession" — in which fewer and fewer men and women are having regular sex — are husbands and wives who attend religious services at least twice a month. In the 1990s, 64 percent of married people aged 20 - 54, both churchgoing and secular, had sex at least once a week, according to the General Social Survey. Now only 48 percent of secular couples (who never or rarely attend church) have sex weekly compared with 62 percent of their religious peers.

Walk three miles a day and 10 minutes of calisthenics to stretch out a bit. Never in better shape, 69 and weigh 15 lbs less than at 18.

If you work your backward bend, it’ll make easier to throw something at your TV when NBC News is on.

couldn’t you at least post the No. 1 exercise so that we don’t have to read an NBC article to find out?

I find my back problems are more of a belly problem, which is a beer consequence. That said, it’s been better lately, lots of walking and stretching my back by touching toes while standing - it sets my vertebrae straight.

I also had a very strange side effect from the MRI that nobody has any idea why or what happened, but when I woke up that morning, not only was all my problems gone it made the veins in both of my legs GLOW Bright red, then a few weeks later it turned dark red and it took 5 years to finally go away. I looked like a frikkin Alien. I have posted a pic here before.

Stand up. Put your hands just above your buttocks on your side/back. Then bend backwards numerous times. That’s the secret exercise.

I read the article on the execution of the exercise. As a former trainer of military personel and dependents, I find one major hole in it that occurs before the exercise is attempted.

No where in the article does the individual mention that before anyone starts a physical training program they should have the clearance of their medical doctor. The article made several mentions of extended lack of exercise to target users. It is not a good idea to attempt a program, even a small one, that is designed to use stretching as a means to flexability and strength growth. It is an open opportunity to injury. Safety first.

She should have mentioned the doctor visit.

I turned 86 about 6 months ago. I have never done backward bend. But on rare occasions I get up from bed with stiffness in spine. I bend forward touching the floor. That seems to relax my spine from accumulated inflammation during sleep.
I rarely get any pains in body, and have not had a cold of flu as far back as I can remember. My daily exercise now is walking at brisk pace for 25-30 minutes with music in earphones. No heart issues, blood pressure issues, but have to watch my blood glucose.

I should add I have been doing the daily walk (365 days!) for 10 years. Before that I played 5 rounds of golf every week for 15 years starting at age 60. That was amazing fun exercise.

...strange side effect from the MRI... the veins in both of my legs GLOW Bright red, then a few weeks later it turned dark red and it took 5 years to finally go away...

That sounds like a reaction to the contrast dye. Most of it is usually filtered out within 24 hours but trace amounts have been detected long afterwards in some people.

The dark red appearance could have been from the contrasting agent, whether gadolinium, barium sulfate, iron oxide, iron platinum, or manganese, which blacken as they oxidize. And it would likely pool in your legs.
