President Donald Trump said “certain levels of inflation” can reduce the burden of the national debt “very rapidly,” putting a long-running bond-market concern into unusually direct language.
The remarks came in a TIME interview conducted Monday and published Thursday, and were reported by the Wall Street Journal’s Nick Timiraos. Trump also said Federal Reserve interest-rate policy is hurting the economy more than inflation and blamed high rates for making it harder to reduce federal deficits.
“Certain levels of inflation will also pay off that debt very rapidly. Very rapidly.”
Pressed on how Washington could bring down the debt burden, Trump added:
“I don’t want to tell you what those means are, but you can pay off the debt through other means.”
For bondholders, the issue is straightforward. Higher inflation reduces the real value of fixed-rate debt if yields do not rise enough to compensate, effectively shifting part of the burden away from the borrower and onto holders of long-duration government bonds.
Trump also criticized the Fed’s rate-setting committee after its unanimous decision last month to raise rates to fight persistent inflation. He called the board “very hostile” while largely sparing Chairman Kevin Warsh, whom he said was constrained by other members of the committee.
Trump is whistling in the wind to prop up the mid terms . He used to brag how we were the number one producer of energy, and we are struggling to pay our fuel bills.

How quickly they’ve forgotten Biden and Obama.
Or maybe that’s what some of them want. 🤷🏻♀️
“ Inflation can shrink Americas wealth very rapidly.”
Depends on what you are invested in.
Equities (in general) have an automatic adjustment for inflation as does land and other assets (eg oil).
I don’t know anyone who is invested in CDs anymore.
Wagu Gr. Beef...$4.99 on sale.
I mix pork (3.29/lb) with my beef for meatballs and meatloaf.
“...as the foreign bond holders (lenders) will get far less back than what they paid (in real terms)...”
What’s to be said about domestic bond holders. Is our debt to ourselves harmless?
What, it doesn’t matter what Trump actually says? Only things Trump says that are not stupid are allowed? That might make coverage tough.
The “small potatoes” remark about fuel prices is what kicked me over the edge.
Most people with equity and hard assets love inflation. Not so much for working folks.
I hate bonds and believe they are for chumps for the most part with very few exceptions.
I didn’t vote for jokes or humor. I expect better. People usually think what the Pres says is supposed to count.
He isn’t Harris. Great battle cry.
Trump is not Kamalla! Vote repooblican!
What a relief.
Wait… what?!?
“bonds and believe they are for chumps”
Anyone buying bonds since 1975 and especially, with the advent of online trading ...is a chump.
That’s how I got into personal investing. I did GDIT’s 401K in ‘04. The default was into a bond plan. I learned and did my own investing. It was hit or miss for a number of years. Now, any year I don’t beat the S&P 500 is a bad year.
The best way of shrinking the debt is paying it down. I’ll take that over drinking the arsenic of inflation so I will be too terminally sick to look at the debt.
Inflating away debt is the government’s goal. That is a massive tax on the public.
I support Trump but he has been useless holding the national debt. He is as big a spender as any Democrat president we have ever had. Trump has been a massive disappointment holding debt down during both his terms. I don’t care about Covid — he has been a massive spender.
Odd how some people moan about inflation but never notice price gouging and when that window is opened for it.
They go hand and hand good example many never say a word about gas costs on holidays and summer vacation times.
Or when it’s said oh it’s a winter fuel blend issue or summer blend issue...........
Trump can’t spend a penny without Congressional authorization. I think the guy is about as fiscally irresponsible as any president in my lifetime, but the biggest problem we face is that our upside-down demographic profile is killing us with massive entitlement spending.
The old counter cyclical argument isn’t working well at all these days and yields may be positive while markets are down but it is arguable to say that is better than nothing. A company will sell their children, fire everyone big enough to die and borrow money to continue dividends and then they will really get serious if they have to. If you can weather a three year downturn you don’t need bonds. If you have old investment dividends, so much the better.
Guess I’m just stupid this way.
And that happens by stealing the value of peoples hard earned savings.
