For most people of a political bent, the big takeaway from Jake Tapper's interview of Gavin Newsom while engaged in performative fly fishing together in Montana which was aired by CNN on Monday was Newsom's pledge to not run for president in 2028 if fellow Californian Kamala Harris decides to once again throw her hat into the presidential race. However, wildlife experts focused in on the inadvertent comedy entertainment provided by the cosplaying fly fishermen.
You can get a sense of just how hilarious such outdoorsmen found the duo by reading the opinions of a couple of them in Wyoming's Cowboy State Daily. Reporter Clair McFarland revealed on Wednesday why many real outdoorsmen found Newsom and Tapper's blatant act of performative fly fishing so awkward yet funny in 'C.J. Stealing some words from a real fly fisherman, I’ll bet they had a red Folgers coffee can full of dirt and worms up on the bank.
As Flyfisher’s of many years my wife and I both laughed hardly at those two. “A River Runs Through It” they were not. I bet they had some expensive gear though. I don’t think they were even casting well if using a spin casting rod.
Actually, you may be on to something. The gel would probably be a great flotant.

It occurs to me that the last president who did a lot of rugged outdoor activity in the elements and with a lot of physical discomfort and exposure and sleeping in it, would be Reagan.
I guess there are no good fishing spots in his own state, you know, the one where he is governor.

One of CH Box’s main characters is a game warden who tickets the Governornof Wyoming for fishing without a license.
Wouldn’t it have been great for a warden to check Newsom and Tappers licenses.
Yeah, both of those city slickers in dress shirts with collars and sleeves rolled up sure looks authentic and who needs a vest when flyfishing anyhow?
