When Fukushima exploded, foreign embassies told everyone to FLEE.
Commercial planes turned around. Ships steered away as fast as they could.
An invisible radiation cloud was drifting across the ocean.

And where was the USS Ronald Reagan?

STEERING DIRECTLY INTO IT.
AT MAXIMUM SPEED.

The radiation alarms were screaming on the bridge.
Every textbook said: "Turn back. Save yourselves."

The Captain and his crew said:
"There are Japanese families shivering on rooftops out there. WE DON'T TURN BACK."

24 hours a day, in freezing sleet, they ran their desalination plants to the brink of failure.
Sailors gave up their OWN fresh water.
They stopped taking hot showers.
They ate cold rations.

Why?
To produce tens of thousands of gallons of pure, uncontaminated drinking water for Japanese babies.

Mechanics with radiation badges worked through the night on snow-covered decks so helicopters could fly non-stop rescue sorties.

While the world backed away in terror,
American sailors ran through the fire for us.

Never tell me true heroes don't wear dog tags. 🇺🇸🔥🇯🇵

But we are a horrible, bloodthirsty terroristic country.

Just ask Hasan “Chop” Piker.

I believe it's true. When I read about it, back when it was happening, the MSM made it sound like incompetence and indifference to the survival of the enlisted onboard. I was moved to finally read of the mission. The writer is a man from Japan now living in the US, writing about the contrasts in culture, often humorously.

True without doubt. Read the Wikipedia account.

These were obama years, not celebrating our greatness and generosity does not surprise me.

These things make me proud to be an American. These kinds of things is who we are supposed to be.

Many of the crew have suffered radiation sickness and are suing Tokyo Power.

There are pictures of the flight deck being decontaminated.

And now, the rest of the story. Doesn't sound like our government wanted to help our veterans, as usual.

Of course, Wikipedia doesn’t mention it in the article about Fukashima. In the article about USS Ronald Reagan, it has only negative things to say. No surprise there.

Apparently there was a wind shear right down the middle of the carrier. Look at the two flags blowing in opposite directions!

Why am I not surprised that a vile Anti-American, far-left troll like yourself would slander our brave sailors?

And this just cancels out all the good thoughts. Not for our troops but for our government.

How can it be denied they were exposed? The ship appears to have needed to be washed down. There are pictures of what sure look like decontamination operations.

DoD said they did ot believe they were exposed but did offer to allow people to register for checkups or something. That was in 2012.

Nice story of our American sailors rendering assistance to Japanese people on the wake of the Fukushima tsunami in 2011.

American G.I.s also showed their generosity following World War II in Japan where they became famous for distributing candy to Japanese kids.

Playing pickleball here in Japan, I met a Japanese woman in her 80's who spoke even less English than my beginner Japanese.

But flashing back to when she was 4 years old, she remembers very well speaking one English phrase: "Gimme Chocolate".

We laughed together at the good fortune of sharing that memory.

My Dad was chief gunner's mate on an LST ship during the Battle of Okinawa where 4,900 American sailors lost their lives due to 1,900 attacks by suicide kamakaze pilots, most of them young teenagers.

As my Dad told us kids about the Battle of Okinawa, "If anybody tells you they weren't scared, they weren't there."

Look at what image? It’s AI, right? Do you have a specific image in mind you can point to?

The ship, if launching jets, would be faced directly into the wind. If not launching jets, it would be pointed in any other useful direction.

Of course he could be lying, but this what a Navy spokesman reported at the time.

The US Navy dispatched aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and other vessels which flew a series of helicopter operations. A spokesman for U.S. 7th Fleet naval personnel stated that monitoring equipment indicated that the warship had been exposed to radiation. Separate hand-held equipment also picked up the contamination on 17 crew members, who had participated in rescue operations. Commander Jeff Davis said that the exposure was low enough that after the crew washed with soap and water, follow-up tests were negative. Davis characterized the exposure as comparable to routine civilian activities and reiterated the US Navy’s commitment to the relief operation.

It’s tough to find definitive information, in part because so many of the claims here lack specificity, but after looking around for information about the incident it looks like the crew of the Reagan, for the most part, were pretty safe and not dangerously contaminated. On the other hand, personnel *based* in Japan apparently had a different experience and their contamination concerns were not taken seriously. At Yokosuka, particularly. And from what I have been able to those suing are mostly personnel who were based in Japan and mostly in Yokosuka. They apparently did suffer dangerous exposure.

The Battle of Okinawa was the largest amphibious assault
and the final major battle of the Pacific Theater in World War II.

Fought from April 1 to June 22, 1945, the conflict was codenamed Operation Iceberg.

And nicknamed the “Typhoon of Steel” for its ferocity.
