A Roman-era shipwreck has been found off Mazara del Vallo, along with hundreds of amphorae on the seabed. Culture Minister Giuli has hailed the discovery as "extraordinary"...

A Roman-era shipwreck, probably dating from between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, has been located around three miles off the coast of Mazara del Vallo, at a depth of 46 metres.

On the seabed, the Italian Ministry of Culture reports, there are hundreds of amphorae, mostly of the Dressel 1A type, two lead anchor stocks and another structure made of the same material.

The discovery was made during a joint inspection carried out by the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Unit (TPC) in Palermo, the Sea Superintendency of the Sicilian Region and the Carabinieri Underwater Unit in Messina, with support from the Carabinieri patrol boat in Trapani, following a tip-off from private citizens...

Sounds like my kind of man. I’m sure he would have loved to see me rock a 1911 on the firing range. I learned Annie Oakley’s secret many years ago. I’m betting he was a comfort to you in his life...Remember the good times.

I’m glad...As much as I dislike how technology has taken over our lives, I’m glad to be able to google names/definitions etc. I guess I’m supposed to thank Al Gore, right?

Now that the cargo has been found, will the insurance payoff be refunded?

I was Obsessive–compulsive when it came to reloading. Old school hand loader with precision instruments and weight scale.
You never asked about Annie Oakley’s secret, lol.

Heh... insurance underwriting for big cargoes began early in the imperial period. Spreading around the financial risk really juiced long distance oceanic trade.

Thanks DannyTN, looks like I lost track of my ping feed, thanks for taking care of it.

Not surprising, all, there are a bunch of topics in the amphora/amphorae/amphoras keywords, a little long when I combined and sorted ‘em, so not in this message.

Well, as soon as somebody said the word olive oil on this thread, I know exactly what was being talked about.

Popeye’s girlfriend.
