A California family’s Hawaiian getaway turned to horror when its members were targeted as “haole boys” and viciously beaten by a mob at a luxury Maui resort, leaving one with a huge head wound.
The violent brawl broke out around 10 p.m. on July 17 at the Kaanapali Alii resort in West Maui, where local officers responded to a disturbance involving roughly 30 people near the property’s pool.
Seven visitors from California, ranging in age from 17 to 62, told police they were assaulted after a group of young people allegedly threw chairs and attacked members of their family.
At least six victims suffered injuries serious enough to require medical treatment.
By the time officers arrived, only 10 to 15 people remained at the scene, several with visible injuries, according to the Maui Police Department.
The family, who has not been named, believes they were singled out because they are white and is urging investigators to pursue the case as a hate crime.
Police have not classified the assault as a hate crime.
Family member Joseph Headfield said the violence was preceded by racial threats from a woman he described as the group’s ringleader.
“There were three females, one of which was the ringleader,” Headfield told Hawaii News Now. “She got up in people’s faces, said, ‘We’re going to beat up your boys tonight. We’re going to beat up the haole boys.'”
“Haole” is a Hawaiian term for a person who is not of Native Hawaiian or Polynesian descent and is commonly used to describe white people or non-locals.

My buddy lived in Honolulu and is half Japanese and half white. He had some guys threaten him on the beach for being haole like 10 years ago, but when he showed them his asian eyelids, they left him alone.

I remember the Navy said to be careful of the locals in Hawaii and Guam back in the early 80s..always go out I pairs.
Never had a problem with any locals, always got along and the wife and I were often invited to their family luau’s on Guam.
You were a “haole” if you acted like an ass... usually around pay day at the local bars.

Only with some groups it’s some earth shattering event when they get picked on.

Age
Sex
Height
Weight
Glasses
Ethnicity
What you wear
Religion
Where you come from
Name
How you speak
Who your friends are
If you’re conservative or liberal
Sexual interests
What you eat
Your hair
What car you own
Your parents
Military or no military
Law enforcement (I kept it secret for that reason)
Your choice in spouse
As kids, (I’m sure other have experienced this too), I have seen people picked on because of the music they like.
Some people simply get taught that when they get their trun to get picked on, it’s the end of the world and everyone rushes in to console them.
Get over it.
Not saying getting beat up is right.
That’s a crime.
Excluding me. 😊. I was a haole in the mid 1950’s before statehood arrived.
A lot has changed everywhere since the early ‘80s....
of course not the perpetrators were probably relatives of the police and anyway everyone on Hawaii hates haolies so what’s the harm. I can’t help wondering if the spirit of Aloha referred to as the superseding law by the Hawaii Supreme Court in gun control case over a year ago helped the victims or the perpetrators.

The original Hawaii 50 Tv show, early episodes covered the bias a few times. I worked there in the early 80s and saw it once away from the resorts.
