Goodell has drawn criticism on a number of fronts, with inconsistent discipline decisions and a reversal of the NFL’s stance on gambling once it was legalized among the topics which have led to scandals. Nevertheless, ownership has remained willing to extend his tenure on several occasions with minimal opposition emerging. No stumbling blocks to another deal are believed to exist.

Bringing a NFL franchise to the largest metro area in Canada is a much smarter business move than a small market team like Buffalo.

I am going to disagree. The Green Bay Packers have the smallest market by far, but they have a national fan base. The Packers are one of the most successful franchises in football by any metric, including profit, you could choose to employ. Los Angeles, the second biggest market in the country, was vacant for 20 years because the city/state wouldn't pony up the money for a new stadium (an unusually wise decision for LA). Even now, the Rams and the Chargers draw more visiting fans (especially when the Raiders or 49ers are in town) than most teams do. Bills fans are both knowledgeable and loyal.

The Canadian market is different. You already have the CFL Argonauts, and some Canadians would prefer to support the home product. Others will travel to Buffalo. The Canadian dollar is weak and might well get much weaker. Most Canadians would rather watch the Maple Leafs lose than the Toronto Bills win, because hockey is THE sport in Canada, and the seasons overlap.

The NBA tried putting two teams in Canada, and one failed (Vancouver), the other is still there (Toronto Raptors) but not exactly getting mindshare. MLB tried two teams, and the Montreal Expos were available only on streaming Internet with no local TV or cable by the end (the streaming in those days was still largely 56K modems, frustrating to watch).

Buffalo is a sports town, and the fans appreciate having the Bills, despite the heartbreaks. I hope they get a break when my Rams are in a down year (which is NOT this year).

It also helps to be a major city like Boston in a densely populated section of the country. I do not know if the mostly empty Jones Dome in St. Louis or the stadiums in Cleveland and Kansas City can sell out even major events.

15,000 actually. And the VERY small city Winnipeg Blue Bombers draw twice that. This tells me that Toronto is NOT a football town, and that an NFL team will not get the kind of love (or $$$) that the Bills get in Buffalo. Toronto is cosmopolitan. They apparently aren't interested in CFL, and the locals, if Canadian will take hockey, or if transplants from wherever, Soccer (which doesn't seem to have an off-season).

No because they will have to pay a couple of billion dollars just to host 8 home games a year. Oh and maybe a Taylor Swift concert.

It wouldn't be that bad if they could build it like the The Big House (Michigan) but that is no longer possible because it is required to be a state of art stadium with all the amenities.

After the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 you could not get tickets at Fenway. However, Southwest had $49 flights out of both Providence and Manchester to Baltimore, Philly and Tampa Bay. If the Sox were playing in those cities there would be more Red Sox fans there than the home team.

That still happens at Tampa now. Especially in September when the Rays are playing the Sox or Yankees.

The Rogers Center in Toronto already exists. It is where the Blue Jays MLB team plays. It is a stadium with a roof that can be opened and closed depending on weather. Plus it is in downtown Toronto. Right next to the CN tower. The main train station, etc.
That is why it would have been better to move the Bills. Not to mention there are already a lot of Bills fans across the border in Ontario now. Many drive over to Orchard Park now to watch the game.

You forget they rent out these stadiums for other events.

I can't even imagine going to a 50k+ seat stadium for a concert. When the Beatles played Shea Stadium they couldn't hear the monitor speakers - although I was too young I suppose it would be a great talking point to attend even though it had to be a zoo. I prefer smaller acoustically sound halls IF/WHEN POSSIBLE, but end up seeing most concerts at SPAC.

They just renovated The Rogers Center so it can no longer host a football game.

They are building the new stadiums to be domes just like the one in Las Vegas.

Green Bay and Buffalo may be the last outdoor stadiums in the league in a decade from now.

Green Bay only exist because they are owned by individuals who owns shares of Packers Stock. IF one person owned them they would have moved decades ago.

The only reason a small market team survives is because of the NFL TV contracts that are EQUALLY SHARED among all the teams in the league. The Dallas Cowboys are by far the most valuable franchise. All NFL licensed products are also shared equally between all franchises. So, if somebody buys a Mahomes or Allen or Tom Brady(whoever is the #1 jersey now) EVERY team gets an equal share of that revenue.

That equal revenue sharing is why Cleveland, Buffalo and Green Bay still have NFL teams.

Whatever the reason, the team is plenty profitable sitting right there in Green Bay. I have known people who drove from Connecticut to Wisconsin to watch the Packers. When there are 8-9 home games a year, it is not too hard to draw from afar for the seats not reserved by season ticket holders. The NFL is smart to share the revenue the way they do.

Even if they didn't, those high-selling Josh Allen jerseys would bring in money for the Bills wherever they play.

I grew up in Orchard Park. Three miles from Rich Stadium(1972). I saw the Who, the Clash, etc there.
My older brother saw the Stones and Skynyrd there in 77. I was only 14. Mom said I was too young.

I have also been to several Bills games at Rich stadium that they are tearing down. I can not believe they didn’t put a roof over it. I have been in there for rain and snow storms. It is only about five miles from Lake Erie. The wind and storms roll right in off the lake.

Yes, that is why the NFL is the only FAIR sports league.

Unlike the MLB. Where the individual franchise owns the broadcast rights. Which is why the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets, etc can afford to pay more to the big free agents. The revenue generated from their TV stations only goes to the team owner.

I worked at the Carrier Dome at SU when I was in college there 1984/85. I went to lots of 40K concerts.

The biggest I was ever at was The Clash opening for The Who at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park. 80K screaming fans. That was The Who’s FIRST Farewell tour in 1982 or 83.

When I was 14 I could hear Lynyrd Skynyrd from the front lawn of our house. Three miles away from Rich Stadium.

But seeing Robert Cray play at the Nashua Preforming Arts Center from the front row is much better.
I was the guy who yelled to Robert “OTIS, MY MAN”. in reference to his playing with Otis Day and the Knights in the movie Animal House.

Worse, as most baseball franchise owners are corporations, looking at short-term gains rather than the health of the team, much less MLB itself.

Game attendance has been priced out of the realm of father-son outings. The move from over-the-air free commercial broadcasts to pay cable and streaming has lowered the visibility of MLB in general. We aren't getting the Jackie Robinsons, Reggie Jacksons, Reggie Smiths, Willie Randolphs, Rickey Hendersons, Dave Winfields that we used to in part because the athletic black youths aren't seeing baseball anymore.

There are maybe a bit more than half-a-dozen baseball cities (Boston, NY, LA, St. Louis, Chicago, Philly, Cleveland, maybe SF). No national attention like NFL gets.
