As the country marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a new ๐‚๐š๐ญ๐จ ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž survey lands like a gut punch: nearly half of all Americans โ€” ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ”% โ€” donโ€™t know what America 250 is actually celebrating. Among Gen Z, itโ€™s worse: ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ% couldnโ€™t say.

Laura Ingraham didnโ€™t hold back on air: โ€œ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ตโ€™๐˜ด ๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ด?

The answer, judging by the numbers, is neither โ€” just a void where basic civics used to be. This is the anniversary of the single document that founded the country: the Itโ€™s not an obscure date. Itโ€™s the one every American child used to be able to name without blinking. A generation raised on ideology instead of history canโ€™t defend a country it was never taught to understand.

Great idea but many school districts wont allow it. There was a teacher shortage in the late 90’s in the state that I lived. One of the proposals was to let your scenario play out. But the PTB said that that was impossible. “How would they know how to teach??” Sure, like most professions dont have some teaching aspect to it and they would also have practical knowledge. They only way they would allow it is if you had a teaching degree which at that time would take 2 years.

So, who is going to waste 2 years getting a worthless degree after they have retired? The left’s mantras of “paying it forward” and “It’s for the children” ring hollow.

In my town, public school reading comprehension is 13%, 4% math. In my hometown, both are 0%.

No wonder young people don’t know what America 250 represents. They can’t read or count that high, and have they actually been taught American history?

By the way, both towns produced billionaires in the day from the same schools. It is criminal how far the public schools have declined in much of the country.

“The children” are failing partly because they mistakenly assume that the future does not belong to everyone.

10th graders with “honorary” college diplomas. The maggots can’t talk or think. Losers. Ph.D.s are now equivalent to a 10th grade education.

They were too busy learning about LGBT issues, that men can easily become women - and they should too, and how evil the U.S. is b/c of slavery and genocide against peaceful Indians.

Honestly the first time I saw “America 250” I thought “wtf is that”. Because they didn’t bother to say anything about Independence Day or anything else. Just dropped a word and a number, bad branding, gotta give people context.

You need to calm down with the ALL-CAPS BOLD FACE HEADLINE

You're disrespecting your fellow Freepers because #1, typing in ALL CAPS is bad netiquette (the equivalent of SHOUTING).

And #2, your headline doesn't merit or deserve any more attention than anyone else's.

Yet you're SCREAMING in bold-face.

How would they know how to teach??

Obviously, based upon our current national reading, math, and science scores they should be asking that question of those who now hold teaching certificates. You know, the same people who regularly go out on strike and extort the public.

I've had some great teachers in my life for whom I have a lot of respect and admiration. That said, I take great issue with the idea / commentary that 'Teachers aren't paid enough', and 'We should be giving more money to teachers instead of to the military'

Can you imagine the screams from the left if we started linking teacher pay to outcomes (with an adjustment factor for where you are teaching)?

For the past few Independence Day celebrations we have gathered with family at a family members dock-uminium at a large lake. There are a couple of dozen units at this particular dock (of dozens of similar docks in this large cove.

As the evening progresses there are pockets of revelers of various ages (Zs, alphas, Xs, etc.)

I have developed a routine where I will stop and politely interrupt various groups with the intro of “We hold these truths to be self-evident...”. Here I pause and look expectantly for someone, anyone to join in. CRICKETS - accompanied by quizzical looks - like I am speaking a foreign language.

I continue with a pleading/inviting look for anyone to join in. The best participation I got this year - an astute young scholar joined in at - “...and the pursuit of happiness”

Relevant story: When our daughter was in fifth grade they stopped giving spelling words/tests. We continued at home with our own list of words. Fast forward to her 7th grade year. She was in the advanced placement class. The teacher was absolutely disgusted that most of the kids couldnt spell very well so he started giving them spelling and vocabulary tests every week.
Upshot: it was the same school district!!!!
