A new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has sparked a strong reaction online, with more dislikes than likes appearing on YouTube. The film, which is set to release in July and stars Matt Damon, Zendaya, and a large ensemble cast, has quickly become one of the most talked-about movies of 2026. The information comes from viewer reactions on YouTube and wider reporting on the trailer’s reception.

Many viewers have focused on what they see as modern-style dialogue and casting choices that do not match expectations of historical accuracy. Some people online say the characters sound too contemporary, while others question whether the casting fits the world of Homer’s ancient epic.

“Yes and adults use inferencing skills based on real world metrics like trailer reactions, casting choices, etc.”

Fine. But pick it back up after movie reaction and 1 month of sales.

Still the twink, but consumers eat it up.

The face that launched three hundred millions in box office loses.

The Odessey is an epic poem told by Homer, establishing the historical touchstone against which all retellings are judged.

“Nolan’s movie isn’t even out yet”

It will be punked by lousy box office. The theaters will erupt in laughter when they see Helen of Troy is Lupita whatshername. Word of mouth will be - “Boring and a farce”

Fan of Kelly’s Heroes here too, but the American GI carrying a Mosin Nagant sniper rifle in an early scene was a bit jarring.

Matt Damon, 2019

“There’s going to be a huge Democratic field. I love Joe Biden and especially now, particularly with our institutions under such attack,”

““In California, we have Kamala Harris, who I think is absolutely brilliant and I would love to someday see her be the president of the United States and if that happened in 2020 — I’d be very happy with that too.”

All I remember was Cyclops and the Trojan Horse.

Never read the thing.

Oh, I did like that movie! Hugh Jackman, Bryan Cranston’s, Julia lewis dreyfuss and chris Dowd were incredible.

And a film one can watch with the family!

Well, I would call it more mythologised than pure fictional.

We know that Troy existed and there were raids by Mycenean pirates, which is the kernel of the Illiad.

Odysseus journey most likely in some sense happened in Bronze age Eastern Mediterranean.

The actors should look like Eastern Mediterranean folk, so while many could be Brownn or even dark brown Egyptian, a black skinned Dinka or a pale skinned redheaded Irishman would both be incongruous and detract from the story.

It surprisingly does hold up even today.

If you read it you would see that what the book says and our perceptions of it are two different things.

Achilles is a great warrior but in the illiad is a disgusting man who raps, desecrated the body of Hector, etc

Hector comes off as the more noble while Menelaus and the other Achaens look seedy.

It is quite a morality story.

Some of those ancient Greek or Roman plays are very readable.

Before you dive into Homer, try the works of Lucian of Samosata, a Syrian from the 2nd century and you would find his farces, etc very enjoyable!

The Lollipop Guild member on the right, wearing the blue shirt, was played by an actor named Kurt "Harry Doll" Schneider (April 3, 1902 - May 4, 1985).

He had an interesting career, and in the 1960s also worked in the aerospace industry - specifically, for Aerojet General Corp. (his small stature made it possible for him to crawl into narrow rocket housings).

Regards,

Imagine the outrage if Nolan directed “The life of Shaka Zulu” with a White man as the main character.

Odyssey’s son says “my dad will be back” in the trailer... it’s going to be another costly flop.

Schlocking in the USA!

Anyone want to bet it’ll be on YouTube faster then the mandalorian and grogu?
