Human DNA can survive on cave walls for thousands of years, opening new window into prehistory

...Although the researchers found traces of ancient human DNA in one pigmented calcite crust sampled in Escoural Cave (Portugal), to their surprise they also found ancient human DNA in several nonpigmented parts of the cave wall in Escoural as well as in Covarón Cave (northern Spain), which had initially been sampled as negative controls.

The study shows that human DNA can be preserved on cave walls long after the populations that visited the cave have disappeared...

Of the 54 samples collected, only five yielded authentic ancient human mitochondrial DNA...two of these samples showed no detectable faunal mitochondrial DNA, a rare finding that strongly suggests that the DNA was deposited directly by humans through saliva or other bodily fluids. By contrast, three other unpigmented wall samples contained both human and faunal DNA, suggesting indirect deposition, likely via sediment transfer or water movement rather than direct contact...

The human DNA of three of these samples comes mostly from females, one mostly from males, and one remains undetermined... the two unpigmented cave wall samples from Covarón revealed that their DNA belonged to modern humans, with nuclear DNA placing them within the Western hunter-gatherer genetic cluster. This is consistent with the findings for other ancient Iberian populations...

Despite favorable conditions... ancient DNA was detected in only one of the 24 rock art panels examined and two additional locations adjacent to other rock art panels. This rarity suggests that pigment surfaces rarely retain enough DNA to survive for thousands of years, particularly if they are not protected by mineral crusts or sealed environments.

True...

In the case of EJ Carroll, she had the 20 year old dress she wore the day when Trump raped her yeh right.....They never did DNA...Why did we not hear from store clerks, just her two buddies who I understand were well paid.

I have often seen your “tasteless reply” smeared on public bathroom stalls!

Maybe not-the research being done is in Spain-not famous for coughing up money themselves-the Max Planque Institute-in Leipzig, Germany-is the research organization doing/sponsoring the work. Any grant money that the project may have is coming from the EUweenies-not us-no need to be concerned about waste...

Archaeologists-at least in the US-are not “very well paid”-when doing research or not-they can make extra money teaching during the off season, but that is not always available-they are just middle class people. My cousin was married to one for 51 years-she is a 3d grade teacher. He died from cancer several years ago, leaving no fortune...

I don’t think archaeological research is a waste of time-many of us are interested in where we came from, who we are, how we got there, etc-it is a science that actually does something useful-not climate change bulls***...

I don’t believe for one minute that EJ Carroll had such a dress-do you? I think she was just yelling “look over here” to distract from her rape fantasies that she was dumb enough to write about...

I speculated that she got it off ebay...and that’s why she got the year wrong in her original lawsuit...that’s how it was advertised.

Probably did-maybe ebay should advertise dresses with spots of what could pass for DNA from famous/infamous men-your choice of several colors, as well as politicians, billionaires, etc. All suitable for use as evidence in frivolous sexual harassment lawsuits...

That's what got me...No store clerks were called to testify??

You can't tell me that no one was around and/or no security cameras.

We have someone near the dressing room at Tjmaxx...and back then...every wonen's dressing area had someone available.

That is one thing that told me it was all a BS accusation-I don’t know of any retail store-especially an expensive one that doesn’t have either a person or camera to catch any attempted theft of merchandise-or that no one recognized a businessman who is as well known as DJT sneaking into a ladies’ dressing room. I doubt they would think it was a stunt for his reality show-the whole thing was made up...
