America's most infamous tech company has a bold, potentially risky plan to supposedly reduce the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, assuming the federal government will sign off on the proposal.
As The New York Post reported, Google wants federal approval to unleash approximately 32 MILLION mosquitoes into the states of California and Florida over the next two years.
This is supposedly part of an effort to halt the spread of several serious mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis, dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever.
The Google researchers particularly focused on West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis. The former is the leading mosquito-borne disease in the US and is widespread in California amongst local bird and mosquito populations.
The Post notes that the project is part of Google's Debug initiative, which was launched more than a decade ago.
More from the Post on how this plan would work:
Researchers say the latest proposal targets Culex mosquitoes, a species known for transmitting West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis.
Rather than releasing biting insects, the company plans to release male mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia, a naturally occurring bacteria. When the infected males mate with wild female mosquitoes, the offspring do not survive, helping suppress mosquito populations over time.
Because only female mosquitoes bite humans, experts say the releases would not increase the number of biting mosquitoes.
Google claims that artificial intelligence and robotic systems would be used to breed, sort, and release the mosquitoes.
The Post reports that the proposal is currently being considered by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is accepting public comments through June 5 before deciding whether to issue an experimental use permit.
Last week, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin angrily shot down wild social media rumors that the agency was planning to release 2 billion genetically modified mosquitoes into Florida and elsewhere.
While this does not conclusively prove that the EPA is leaning one way or another regarding Google’s plan, it suggests Zeldin could be opposed.

New York and Martha’s Vineyard.
Yes, they ought to be breeding dragon flies. They lay their eggs in the same waters that mosquitoes do and eat the mosquito larva before they become adults..........
Colombia...........
Tell Gates we will not be his lab rats.
The bacteria is harmless to humans and we are already exposed to it when we eat produce or even get bitten by a regular mosquito. If this works to kill off mosquitoes spreading dangerous diseases I say go for it. There’s parts of Florida where you’ll get swarmed by mosquitoes even in the daytime.
That “mist” was probably DDT now a banned pesticide.
Any mention of the effects of this on global warming, racism?
They’re using the T-1000 prototype mosquito!
Mosquitos are particularly bad in my part of Texas this year. I don’t know of anyone who has contracted any of those diseases this year, I believe West Nile is the most common around here. I knew one police officer who had it about 20 years ago and it crippled him for life. He is still in a wheelchair as far as I know.
We got rid of screw worms here in Texas back in the 60’s by breeding sterile flies and releasing them. And may have to do it again as the screw worms have begun to migrate north from Mexico. Using sterile insects isn’t a new thing. We also use IGR’s (Insect Growth Regulator) in pesticides to keep insects from maturing.

I never went outside at dusk in order to avoid the West Nile Virus in Michigan. Most people got it and lived but I am still not immune to it like them.
Apparently got into Michigan in the stagnant water on tires on flat decks of ships coming in from Africa. Others coming out of the cargo doors of planes and then breeding in the weeds by the airports.
If G**gle’s behind it, no good can come from it.
On the next Svengolie
But Google is not a benevolent entity. Its general character ranges from apathetic to malevolent.
(What else are they putting in these mosquitos?)
I don’t get how these private entities (even if they are publicly traded corporations) are allowed to do such things, like this, like Gates’ ‘chemtrail’ sprays of barium and aluminum nano particles to ‘stop global warming’ and his tick spreading scheme.
If the government entity in charge of an area chooses to do it, so be it, but I don’t see how anyone else can do it on sua sponte.
Or maybe they will identify as female mosquitos and start biting.
The preverbal mad chemist using our backyards as his laboratory - what could possibly go wrong with that harebrained idea?
DDT needs to return.
It saves lives.
