Is Facebook Running a Passkey Scam?
Self | April 24, 2026 | PJ-Comix

Posted on 04/24/2026 10:05:26 AM PDT by PJ-Comix

I have tried to go to Facebook on both my computer and my phone. Both are asking me to either use Passkey or click for another method of verification in order to verify my account. When I clicked for another method all I get is a BLANK screen. Okay, after a few tries I figured this would mean having to download another app but I did it just to get into Facebook. So what happened? The downloaded app said I would get a 3 day free trial and then I would be charged. Um, no thanks. Oh, and is Facebook making money from this scam?

On my iPhone, Passkeys are in the Passwords app that came with the iOS.

On desktop, they always ask me for a passkey to get into the message. I’ve never been asked for one using the app.

A few months ago a friend asked me to buy something on fb marketplace. I signed up, bought it, friend was happy, no problems. Then I noticed fb wanted me to review the seller. Ok, no problem.
Oops...you have to use the fb app on your phone for that. Well whatever. I downloaded the app. Then fb wanted to get a photo of me to make sure I’m human, and who knows what else they’d want after that. So no app for me and when I declined to provide them with a selfie, they “locked” my account.
Now, I don’t care, the account was just to buy something for someone with no account or even a computer. And trying to be nice to a local seller, leaving a good review. But it was one silly rule after another, one unreasonable requirement after another.
How do people put up with that?
Is anything still “none of your business?”

I am forever grateful to my MegaCorp that the groups I worked for discouraged us from using social media because of the sensitive nature of our work. As in, DON’T DO IT! By the time I was told social media access was fine, I couldn’t bring myself to sign up.

Never heard of passkey, but I recall my aol email, rarely used anymore, wants a phone number, an alternate email, and they have ideas for my fingerprint as well.
I bet even the state police don’t need anyone’s alternate email.

I’m still hoping someone comes up with an alternative platform that is free and easy to use.

,,, I'm able to tell you on this site rather than Facebook that I've changed my breakfast cereal.

Scams do exist.

Fake App Downloads:
Some users report encountering blank screens or prompts to download unrelated apps when trying to log in. This is often a phishing attempt or a glitch, not a legitimate Facebook requirement.

Facebook does not require users to download third-party apps or pay for authentication services. Passkeys are a free, built-in security feature that uses your device’s existing biometric data (like fingerprint or face scan) or PIN, which is stored locally on your device and not by Facebook.

If you encounter a request for payment or a suspicious third-party app during login, it is not a legitimate Facebook passkey feature.

I’ve never used Facebook, but from time to time, when they want me to sign into my Bing homepage, I’ll get a request to set up a passkey. I just close it out, and sign in with my screen name and password. If they ever forced me to get one, I wouldn’t use their site anymore.

Yeah, I do have a FOUR digit pin number for when I need my passwords and a box pops up for that. No problem. However, the passkey asks for a SIX digit number which is not available to me as far as I can tell. Plus the alternative way it gives me to click shows NOTHING when you click it.

"Passkey is housed on your phone, not Facebook."

I've been asked to create a passkey on my laptop by Bing.com. I have never joined Facebook. I have an iPhone and use it specifically for calls and texts. If I do open Safari on my iPhone to search for something, Bing is my browser on the phone. They've never asked me to sign in with a passkey on my iPhone.

Same here. I rarely use FB on my phone. Too many ads that I can block on my PC.

If I am confronted with that same scenario, then I’m done with FB as well. I know are others which are not as well known as FB, MeWe for instance, but I agree, I will not use it if facial recognition becomes the law of the land.

FB is how I keep in touch with close friends in Japan.

IN the last couple of day, when I click on the chat, a 6 digit code thingy pops up. I input a number, it appears that the number worked since it un-encrypted the messages back and forth from them, but now I am not able to send them any messages.
It says something about them having to log in first before I can message them again, which makes no sense.
So, now I have no contact with them :^/

It is an app that saves usernames and passwords. It is provided by Google. That’s all it is

A passkey is anew form of authentication where you don’t need a password.

I use bitwarden as my password and passkey manager.

But I think some authenticator apps have them built it as well.

I don't use Google and never would, nor do I want them to save my username and passwords. My MacBook Air already does that if I ask it to.

My Android phone hasn’t changed, but my computer has.
I can’t get into Facebook by clicking on the Facebook app even after updating the app.
Facebook just doesn’t load.
I can get onto Facebook by clicking on anyone else’s link.
https://facebook.com/RepRashida
Then I can’t go to my home page.
I can click on my icon which takes me to my profile and can do everything from there.
I read everything from my Feeds and can still click on that.
Everything works normally, but I can’t go to my home page.
