Retired matador killed by bull ahead of bullfight in southern Spain

A retired matador was killed by a bull on Friday as he prepared the animals for a bullfight at an arena in Málaga, in southern Spain, organizers said.

Ricardo Ortiz was handling the bulls in their enclosures at La Malagueta, a historic bullring in Málaga, when one of the animals gored him, according to Lances de Futuro, the company organizing the bullfight.

“We want to convey our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, a much loved and respected person in the bullfighting world,” the company statement said.

Ortiz’s death came a day before a Picasso-themed bullfight, during which three bullfighters will face six bulls, is scheduled to take place at the arena.

Ortiz, born in Málaga in 1974, was from a family of bullfighters and had a successful career of his own, Spanish newspaper El País reported.

Bullfighting and bullrunning, both of which are emblematic of stereotypical Spanish culture, have become increasingly controversial in recent years, caught in the crosshairs of a culture war and condemned by animal rights activist groups.

Between 2010 and 2023, the number of bullfighting festivals in Spain dropped by a third, according to Reuters.

Elsewhere across the world too, the practice is declining. Colombia passed a bill in 2024 banning bullfighting there by 2027, after which only seven countries around the world will host bullfights. And Mexico City overhauled the tradition last year, after its local congress passed a measure to make bullfights less harmful to both bulls and matadors by banning the use of spades and swords to attack the animals.

Didn’t you forget to mention the multiple painful darts impaled into the bull before this alleged “coup de gras” of “heroism” of a caged animal?

That AIN’T sport.
That’s animal cruelty, plain and simple.
...on the level of dog fighting.

Depraved circus for the debated soul.

"They're not fights, they're slow, systematic torture of one of God's creatures........"

The vast majority of wild rcreatures die from one of three causes: privation, predation or disease. So what God has waiting for them is no less cruel that what you saw in the arena.

With respect, I must point out the bull try to kill a man, any man, even if bullfighting had never been invented.

All bulls would. The existence of bullfighting really has nothing to do with bulls killing humans.

But Stew, thankfully, will not be tortured in sick delight. This will be done as quickly and painlessly as possible.

It’s different.

Even the last day for Carpaccio was nice. He never saw it coming or felt a thing. Which is how it should be.

Yeah, we are all meat eaters and hunters but there is no reason to make the animal suffer.

Death should be as quick and painless as possible.

There's only one problem with your argument. Nature kills for survival, bull fighting is killing for sport and spectator pleasure, nothing more.

Nice try tho.......

If it weren’t for bullfighting, Feruccio Lamborghini (whose sign of the Zodiac was Taurus) couldn’t have come up with such cool names for his cars. Miura, Isolero, Urraco, Espada, Jarama, Jalpa, Diablo, Gallardo, Murciélago, Aventador and Huracan all were named after notable individual bulls, breeds of fighting bulls, regions where fighting bulls are raised, or something to do with bullfighting.

I’m not a bull fighting fan by any stretch. I saw the KARMA in this story, for sure.

I appreciate the art of it, but I’m glad it’s a dying art.

Guess I’ll never get to go to bullfights on acid.

Only a part of the tenderloin. The cubs wanted to try it.

We told them it was not that great but they insisted and since it was from an animal that was raised properly I said ok.

They didn't care for it

~~~
Well...there it is...that settles the argument on why torturing animals for sport is now approved!
...so rich people can drive sporty cars with nifty names derived from the names and deaths of tortured animals.
Very BOURGEOIS!
