Royal Caribbean’s newest cruise ship is the world’s largest.
The Hero of the Seas, set to launch late next summer, includes a record-breaking water park, the most pools at sea, 28 dining options, a multi-level family treehouse, and a kinetic sculpture, just for kicks.
Billed by Royal Caribbean as “the most unstoppable, incredible, revolutionary family vacation ever,” the high-stimulation vessel, which appears to have been designed by an eleven-year-old child high on cocaine, will officially open for bookings on Thursday, April 2.
The Hero of the Seas belongs to Royal Caribbean’s Icon class, the cruise line’s newest generation of ships, which also includes Icon, Legend, and Star of the Seas.
These mega-ships combine resort-style amenities and family-focused neighborhoods.
“Icon Class truly set a new standard for family vacations, and Hero of the Seas takes that vision even further,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean, in a press release.
“With more water, more thrills and more choices for all ages, we’re continuing to build on what our guests love about Royal Caribbean and delivering the experiences families are looking for when vacationing together,” he continued.
While aboard Hero of the Seas, guests can swim at nine distinct pools, including family-friendly spaces, adult-only options, and, because maximalism and max escapism during an economic downturn are the vibe of this here vessel, the world’s largest onboard swim-up bar.

You’ll never get me on one of those TTT’s - (tempting terrorist targets)
I thought that so my first cruise was only 3 days and it was on one of Carnival's smaller ships.
It was shortly after 9/11 and the cost was less expensive than staying home.
After 3 days I still got lost trying to find our room and we went on another sister ship the next year for 4 days and i just began to find our way around and was still discovering new areas on the ship.
The ship was Carnival Fascination which carried about 2,000 passengers and was 70,000 ton. I thought that was large.
Me neither. Until they can change the “character” of those who cruise, nah
Flying a seaplane is the last real remnant of flying left in the States. All seat of the pants and visual. You just take-off, climb to 1000’, and fly the rivers, bays, or coastlines. No IFR flying. No night time flying. All VFR, and just a few instruments. No air traffic control. No bureaucrats. Purely skill and thrill. Both very rare in aviation these days.
Well, I’m not crazy about crowds; but the thing that scares me about cruise ships is simply not being able to get away when something bad happens - like an outbreak of disease; or suddenly needing serious medical care.
There doesn’t seem much to attract me on an ocean cruise that I couldn’t find on land.
(Some of the little US river cruises look interesting, though.)
It's worth reading down the comments at the link.
Maneuvering or azipod thrusters do not “blow sideways” to keep a ship from capsizing - so, please stop, you’re killing me.
The real reason ships do not flip over or capsize is because they keep a positive GM. The GM, or metacentric height, is the vertical distance between the center of gravity and the metacenter. As long as there is a positive GM the ship will not capsize.
Even an Annapolis graduates knows that and they don’t know much. Most likely lost on a USCG academy graduate tho. :)
It’s bad enough with all the vomiting viruses that break out on those things.
Look at the generators, motors, RO systems, food and waste storage systems, stabilizers and fuel compartments for a city, all below the water line.
All propelled by electric pods that rotate 360 degrees.
Pretty amazing stuff!
Jimmy doesn’t decide what I do, either — but my point is that I’ve also done vacations that involve renting a place on the ocean/near a tropical beach (this is made much easier thanks to Airbnb/vrmo, I’ll grant).
I like that, too — but my experience has always been that the minute I suggest a day of just relaxing and enjoying the place? My family/fellow travelers always think I’m sort of madman with a screw loose, so not being a dictator? Fine, we’ll go into “town”. We’ll go...somewhere.
50-51+ weeks a year, all my adult life - I have responsibilities and a forced stack rank of things I HAVE to do, things I SHOULD so, and things I WANT to do. Now, I wouldn’t trade benefits of that for anything — that’s real life.
I’m simply saying: I treasure those “days at sea” to experience a bit of escapism in flip-flops and a cocktail and limiting the day’s choices to what we’re going to have for dinner.
I wouldn’t trade my life for 365 days of that - but if I get a few such days a year, sitting on a big, gaudy ship? I’ll take it.
Looks like the cruise industry is doing better than Las Vegas to get away from it all. Lots less expensive for a 5-10 day cruise than Vegas.
You have never been in a cruise apparently.
I read somewhere it is cheaper to live on one of these year round than here on land! lol
“When loaded with crew, passengers, and all they need, the center of gravity has to be below the waterline, provided the line is painted at the right level. Otherwise, the ship will flip over. “
NOPE
Looks tippy to me
Thank you for posting the history of that ship.
We’re close in age. Late November, 1960
I don’t need to hit my thumb with the hammer, either. I know it hurts.
So you had your summer school vacation ruined by the Watergate hearings, too? My TV shows were all pre-empted.
I’ve been on 4 cruises in the last 2-1/2 yrs & I’m planning our 5th one for late summer. We’ve only cruised on Royal Caribbean so far & enjoyed ourselves every time. I’m not really interested in the ports per se because I love sea days the most. It’s just such a pain getting to an ocean port from Arizona or else I’d go cruising every month, lol.
