Democrats revive a once-taboo idea: Capping grocery prices
Washington Post ^ | February 19, 2026 | Julie Z. Weil

Posted on 03/26/2026 4:53:52 PM PDT by grundle

On Thursday, the Center for American Progress, a prominent left-leaning think tank that often cultivates policy ideas later adopted by the Democratic Party, proposed a two-year freeze on the prices of 22 food items, such as strawberries and steak.

“Price caps interfere with the very basics of a capitalist economy,” said Steven Kaimin, an economist at the American Enterprise Institute who read the Center for American Progress paper before its publication. “Maybe it’s impossible to produce eggs at $3. Maybe the cost of producing them is $3.50. In which case the eggs come off the market entirely, or … only the cheapest producers can sell at $3, and then the supermarket puts them out at $3, and they sell an hour later, and everybody else goes and sees empty shelves.”

Right on cue, an incoherent reply that affirms exactly what I said.

Let’s hear your argument for banning oil exports. Oil that you don’t own and oil that you did not risk a dime to extract.

“ That’ll bring nothing but food and supply shortages”

yes, but it also will create a thriving black market.

So you have that.

Which Founding Father wanted to ban exports? Can you cite a Ben one instance of f it? When did your protectionist dreams expand to exports? Are you against trade surpluses?

Do you also wish to ban oil imports?

You sound like Jimmah Carter. I am sure you approved his windfall profits tax evasion on oil. Democrats will love your oil export ban. It for the green agenda.

The n case you missed it the US president has dice more oil and gas than it consumes. There is also swapping that occurs as in we export oil our refiners cannot use and import crude they can use.

Like Jimmah you will cap oil wells to make sure we don’t have oil to export.

From each according to his ability to each according to his need, right comrade?

The oil export ban was stupidly lifted just 10 years ago. Free Traitors make my skin crawl.

As citizens we own the border. I have no say how oil is used domestically but internationally — I damn well have say. All of us citizens do. Even pinheaded dickless Libertarians that think patriots and borders are archaic concepts have a say.

Once the ban was lifted oil and gas production sky rocketed and prices dropped.

You can ban exports but you cannot force anyone to invest money in something they find unprofitable. Ban exports and prices will go up. Just the same as your desire to ban imports prices have gone up.

What other export do wish to ban?

Still waiting for you name that Founding Father who wanted to ban exports. The idea that “protectionism” means banning exports is one of your all time ludicrous comments. Trump who is the biggest protectionist in modern times is against banning oil exports. He is continuously promoting US exports. Is he a traitor?

I guess on your world you would use ICE to keep people in as well as out.

You do not own a single inch of the border. Just like you do not own a square inch of an oil field. You can have say but no one need listen or act on what your saying.

Why don’t you buy some oil company shares and go to a shareholder meeting and have your say? See if you can convince people to invest their money while agreeing to limit their profit.

Still waiting for the name of that Founding Father and your list of exports to ban.

The Democrat politicians know exactly what effect price controls have on the economy. It’s their stupid to the bone voters who never learn. Cipolla defines stupidity as actions that cause harm to others with no benefit to the person performing the actions. Classic definition of Democrat voters although they harm themselves too. Cipolla has a term for these people too, it’s something like to clueless, but I forget the exact term
“ Stupidity is a structural, universal force, independent of education or class, which creates net damage to society and is often vastly underestimated in its frequency”

“Reading back in history, didn’t Nixon try something like that? Dunno.”

He sure did, and that’s why suddenly there were weird shortages of stuff. Plywood, for instance. Then came the workarounds, shrinkflation, the beef industry invented new meat cuts to bypass the controls on certain cuts.

Stalin used starvation as a handy way to fix food storages.
But today’s communists never learned that from their communist professors.
