Democrats revive a once-taboo idea: Capping grocery prices
Washington Post ^ | February 19, 2026 | Julie Z. Weil

On Thursday, the Center for American Progress, a prominent left-leaning think tank that often cultivates policy ideas later adopted by the Democratic Party, proposed a two-year freeze on the prices of 22 food items, such as strawberries and steak.

“Price caps interfere with the very basics of a capitalist economy,” said Steven Kaimin, an economist at the American Enterprise Institute who read the Center for American Progress paper before its publication. “Maybe it’s impossible to produce eggs at $3. Maybe the cost of producing them is $3.50. In which case the eggs come off the market entirely, or … only the cheapest producers can sell at $3, and then the supermarket puts them out at $3, and they sell an hour later, and everybody else goes and sees empty shelves.”

Democrats propose starvation as a price cutting strategy.

A logical evolution of socialism.

Price caps = fewer goods.

Lower prices on the tags on the shelves, no food on the shelves.

That’ll bring nothing but food and supply shortages as far as the eye can see. They never learn anything.

They tried this during the COVID scamdemic and the shelves were empty because of it.

Why does basic economics elude so many people?

Reading back in history, didn’t Nixon try something like that? Dunno.

Price fixing. Always guaranteed to work. Just ask venuzuela They were basically floating on oil but still figured out how to starve the population with price fixing

No problem. Just pass a law mandating that the supermarkets have to keep their shelves full. [/s]

Democrats saw Communist shortage economies and said, “starve me harder! Gimme some of that!”

Price controls can work. But only for items currently on the shelf. Because no supplier is going to resupply items at a loss.

Of course a socialist government can simply take over the means of production and force the resupply. And that might be on the to-do list of today’s Democrats.

Price caps have been tried before. If they are high, they are useless, if they are low, they lead to shortages.
See Soviet Union, Cuba, etc.

Nixon capped beef prices. The ranchers just shot the cattle.

I went to East Berlin, before the wall came down, and stopped at a state shoe store. There were at most 50 pairs of shoes, and the line to come in the store went around the block. I talked to a local and asked him that if buying shoes is this hard, then how do you buy a car? He said you pay cash first, and then you wait seven years. There was one model car with a choice of 3 colors, but he told me you take whatever comes up first. He then extolked to me how great communism was. Health care was free. I am sure is was great health care.

I vote for setting them at 1960 prices.

If some of the old farmers and grocers resist this people’s pricing then we can execute them and let our idealistic youth run the farms and grocery stores.

“He said you pay cash first, and then you wait seven years.”

Why?

Well, the plumbers coming on that morning.
