ChatGTP

🟢 Late 1990s → early 2000s (rapid growth phase) By 1999: ~50,000–100,000 daily “hits” (not the same as visits) Early 2000s: Became one of the largest political forums on the web Internal logs tracked detailed daily usage (not public now)

👉 Interpretation: This was its peak growth era, driven by:

Clinton impeachment early internet forums lack of social media competition

🔵 Mid–late 2000s (peak influence) Around 2010: ~6.2 million monthly visits (~200k/day average) Claimed: Heavy engagement and long session times Alexa rank (historically, not precisely archived): Roughly in the top 1,000–5,000 US sites at peak (various archived estimates)

👉 Interpretation: This was likely the true high-water mark:

Major role in online conservative activism Before Facebook/Twitter dominance

🟠 2015–2020 (decline phase) Decline noted as: Users aging and shrinking community Lost ground to: Facebook Twitter Reddit

👉 Interpretation: Traffic likely dropped from:

~200k/day → well under 100k/day 🔴 2020–2026 (modern era snapshot) Self-reported: ~1 million monthly visitors ~20 million monthly pageviews Third-party estimate (SimilarWeb, 2026): Audience skew: older (65+) Likely: ~30k–60k daily visits (estimated range) Global rank: roughly 50,000–150,000 range (typical for that traffic tier)

👉 Interpretation: Stable but far below peak Still active niche community

GROK

Early 2000s peak popularity: On January 27, 2003, the site reported an Alexa rank of 1,251 globally (only about 1,250 sites had more traffic/hits at that time). This was during a period of high visibility for conservative online communities. In later years (e.g., around 2012), Alexa ranks were in the low thousands to mid-5,000s (e.g., 5,505 in one 2012 mention). Alexa data is no longer available for full historical tracking, as the service shut down in 2022.

Recent Traffic Estimates (2025–2026) Current third-party tools provide these approximate figures (note: these are estimates; actual numbers can differ due to methodology):

Semrush (recent data): January 2026: ~1.87 million visits (US rank ~6,331). February 2026: ~2.02 million visits (up ~8% from January). December (prior month): ~1.2 million visits. Global rank around ~23,000 in one snapshot.

SimilarWeb (February 2026): Global rank: #41,875. Category rank: #182 in Government. Traffic decreased by ~15.6% compared to the previous month in one report. Over the last three months, the global ranking worsened slightly (from ~37,661 to 41,875).

This translates to roughly 40,000–70,000 daily visits in recent months (assuming 30-day months), with fluctuations. Engagement metrics from similar tools often show longer session times on such forum sites (e.g., one mention of high average session duration). Trends and Context

Peak vs. now: The site was relatively more prominent in the early 2000s (top ~1,000–5,000 globally by Alexa) during major political events. Like many older forums, it has seen declining relative visibility as social media, news aggregators, and newer platforms (e.g., X/Twitter, Reddit alternatives) grew. Traffic spikes often occur around major U.S. political/news events. Comparisons: It still outperforms some smaller conservative sites but trails larger ones in raw volume.

Excellent. Thank you for your effort. Your analysis really squares with my anecdotal observations.

Additionally, I do think it’s healthy to have these discussions and possibly help secure a meaningful future for FR.

This was at it’s peak when the Dan Rather story broke out regarding GW Bush national guard. The type writer font was proven to be fake by Freeper Buckhead (and others).

Also during the Obama fake birth certificate, this place was hopping.

I am sure that a lot of the decline was due to Humblegunner who insulted and chased away every new poster on the site.

How that guy was allowed to stay active on this site amazes me.

Increased competition - other websites that offer similar information and/or discussion. they promote, offer better enviroment, user interface, etc. many alternatives that include podcasts, etc.

Purges - banning users for one reason or another, some of them long time users and contributors

User interface - limitations, hasn’t changed

Increased hostility among users / lack of tolerance of opinions. It will drive people away.

I like the fact that FR supports HTML, which allows for creative posts.

We were out on the streets making our presence known, walking our talk, from the great group I’m DC nearly every day to all of us in the west facing down armed federal agents and envirofreaks.

Quantity is important for the importance of FreeRepublic, because - in my view and with our Conservative bias - one great benefit of FreeRepublic is that from its members’ postings you get a large news aggregator in one place. Going to FreeRepublic - when it is getting good traffic and postings, means you don’t have to go hunting on dozens of websites, as a lot of their content will get/is getting postings on FreeRepublic.

Don’t forget the effect of the deep state posters.

There are two kinds: those who know they’re working for the deep state, and those who don’t.

Both kinds operate on low IQ.

Our Sunday Talk Show thread was really rockin’ in the aughts. Usually 1,000 - 1,700 posts per week.

And not really to follow the shows and passivley watch, but to call them out on their hypocrisy, omissions and lies. We used to give prizes to the top 3 posts of the day.

I don’t believe 40-70k unique hits here daily
Daily unique posters maybe a few thousand

There is just too much else out there

Podcasts

Old people like here on Facebook

X

I listen to pods all day driving my biz rounds

Once FR was about it

Luciannes site and another Liberty post or something

FR is much more culture war now definitely that

Less neocon and GOPe

Loudest group no question. The dispensation posse

Is there like a directive or something from Jerusalem ?

Joltin’ Joe’s now with the Oakland A’s. Hey hey hey.
Hey hey hey.

Of course, that was the 1968-1999 lyric.

Updated lyric:

Joltin’ Joe’s now rolling in his grave. Hey hey hey.
Hey hey hey.

Anyone remember the alt freeper site clown posse

The meanest posters went there to be even meaner

They were so ugly to the big breasted woman from Texas

Maybe my first inkling how ugly folks could be online

Then they messed with nolu Chan

Their error lol

They ran and hid like scalded cats

I married classy green eyed blonde in case anyone is curious

Those stats are very interesting.

However, bottom line, what happens to Free Republic if the quarterly fundraisers are not met? Does it fold up, disband, go offline?

I've hesitated asking this question because I don't want to appear to be a "debbie downer" but FR has become a large part of my life and I go here for news before I go anywhere else.

If it was to go offline, what will we all do? Where will we go? I'm hoping there's light at the end of the tunnel, but I dunno.

Someone help me out.

Based on the "Since" date of the replies so far (76 as I type this) there are not a lot of new people on this thread;

1 (#20) dated 2025-12-11

1 (#72) dated 2020-12-16

2 from 2011, 1 from 2013, 1 from 2014

And the rest as far back as mine, or older (1997 was the oldest date I saw). And of course, the new ones I mentioned above are probably a 2nd ID and not that person's first FR name.

What you can't see with that list is the viewers who don't comment. Still, the vitality of the site is dependent on how many new FR names come in each year and keep coming back.

We might see a few more from Canada with Bill C9 online censorship.

(a few on here don’t want to hear from people in foreign countries)
