The Garden Thread - February, 2026
February 1, 2026 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 01/31/2026 6:26:44 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

I do not ever recall seeing Owls nest cheese. I do not think they sold it in our area. Something found in the "Greater Madison" area. (North Hwy 51 Poynette). SOm I can buy Kakauna club was bought by in the KC area, but its in a plastic container.

https://www.kaukaunacheese.com/

Daughter turning off the internet. (Note the pastry puff cheese balls on their home page!)

Now, under the auspices of Bel Brands USA, 600+ tons of Kaukauna are produced annually and can be found in grocers throughout the US. And while Kaukauna Cheese Spread is sold in an impressive 3,400+ stores, we are driven by discipline to stay true to the authentic heritage, namesake, and what makes this brand great

Router turned off and on. (US Security services DHS, FBI, etc, Router monitoring firmware update completed and up again...hopefully they increased our Buffer size a bit! )

I would like to try Owls Nest cheese, but I do not think it is sold locally. (You do not have to leave Iowa county just take a trip to Arena Cheese!)

Note: The product is not a cold pack in the traditional sense (like cold-pack cheese from the 1960s/70s), but rather a refrigerated, creamy cheese spread. It is not a shelf-stable product.

Cheese balls with nuts. Do not care for them. Unless you make your own, the nuts are often rancid and have in the package so long they are soft and soggy.

The cheese ball....Like it! I would probably use ham in place of the bacon.

“Victor Quick Kill trap”

Beau uses those baited with peanut butter. Works like a charm. :)

Trip to Menard’s went as usual. $300 turned into $400. Bought another RV/Marine battery. Roll up motors are 24 volt, all my controllers will take 9-30 volt so 24 is fine and is preferred. Network switch is 12 volt but I need a bigger one anyway, 8 ports instead of 4 ports, and 24 volt versions are plentiful. Two 12 volt batteries can be wired to become a 24 volt battery and I have two identical solar panels meant for 12 volt but can also be wired for 24. My solar charge controller will do 12 or 24.

Only 12 volt thing left is the RV water pump but those are available in 24 volt too and I need a new one with higher GPM anyway.

Will be interesting to see how this works. It's a soaker hose made for 1/4" drip system. Found it at Menard's. Very flexible and isn't stuck in that coiled up form like the plastic. I think it would be good to spiral around a tree seedling.
Mfg website mentions twice; "Ideal for short runs on flat surfaces" and also mentions how the far end won't flow as much as the end closer to water source.

Your irrigation hose brings back memories of our horrible drought in 2012. Beau and Randy planted 400 trees that Spring. No rain. On the 4th of July in 104 degree heat, Beau and I hauled 800 gallons of water to those trees. I learned to drive the Allis-Chalmers 1954 tractor that very day, LOL!

200 of the 400 trees (Norway Spruce, planted for deer habitat) survived and it’s just a LOVELY spot to visit now - but MAN was that a lot of work!

Mama had a cold, cold BEER at the end of that day - and I don’t even really LIKE beer! ;)

Right after I posted, I was reminded of the NWS Missouri Flood Outlook which basically says, ain’t gonna happen. All water tables, big lakes etc are low.

We’ll hit 74 tomorrow but Sun/Mon have wintry mix. We’ve only had one of those this year. It’s normally once every week or two. The shop and tunnel are dry as a bone. Normally they would both be soaked all the way through because everything’s soaked and it comes in from the sides.

Been a very dry winter so unless we have a wet spring, I suspect I’ll be making a lot of water runs, especially if I get tree seedlings, which I plan to do. Not 400 though. Just several and near the tunnel. With such dryness, any irrigating I do will be short lived as it quickly soaks downward. Mulch will be important, unless we have a wet spring, which is not looking good.

We have an, ‘interesting weather situation’ coming up this weekend.

It hit 40 today. Tomorrow is predicted at 56 degrees! Then Saturday? The bottom drops out. 30’s and a few inches of snow!

Beau leaves in the AM for his ‘Country Bear Jamboree’ trip up to our cabin to help the DNR guys tag sow Black Bears and see how many cubs they popped out over the winter - while hibernating! Hello! What a great way to birth your babies - ASLEEP THROUGH IT ALL!

So, I have all of this to take care of while he’s gone:

Ithaca (Mule)
Stew (Steer)
Jennifer Cooniston (Puppy Training Raccoon - she is never in danger!) )
10 Laying Hens - not named - Witness Protection Program ;)

Hunting Dogs:

Emma Jolene
Osage
Sioux
Shasta
Blackfoot
Comanche
Taylor Marianne
Fremont
Mandan
Shawneee
Arikara
Mack (Coon dog in training for a friend)

Dolly (House Beagle)
Boyd - Indoor/Outdoor Cat
Eva - Indoor/Outdoor Cat

I can guarantee the cats will be out all day and all night until the snow hits - they HATE winter so much, LOL!

Mom is coming out tomorrow to help me with chores and to spend the night. *LOVE* Miles called her and said I was NOT allowed to be unsupervised for the weekend. ;)

Beau bought me an entire PALLET of dog food, yesterday. One TON! I SHOULD have enough to make it through the weekend...

Pollard. At this point that is how I have done pretty much all of my watering. I do not go longer than 25 feet. I have a bunch of irrigation lines that I do not use and I suppose I should figure out where else I can use it.

They sell it in 50 foot rolls but then tell you short runs only. The far end never did have much for water beads coming out. Could be air needed to be purged still. I didn’t think to run it with no plug in the end until water came out and then plug it.

Last year I figured out that if you make a U out of drip line and connect both ends to the main line, it evens out the pressure - flow. I’ll try the same for the soaker line after work and see how it does. If nothing else, cut it into four 12-1/2 foot lengths and spiral it around tree seedlings. Would work well for that I think. Could run it 24 hours a day for a few days to water it in and then 1-2 times a week for a year.

Currently my beds are about 25 foot long. They could be longer but I had/have nestle at one end of the tunnel that I was/am trying to eradicate. Will see how much of that comes back this year.

Some good news - my SIL had hip replacement surgery first thing this morning. It all went well & she’s been in recovery for about an hour. Her daughter (my niece), flew in from out of state to be a “private nurse” today through Monday. She’s a PA so we all feel better having her keep an eye on things. My SIL has been in pretty bad pain since October - initially thought it was sciatica. After her PCP messed around for a couple of weeks, she finally got to a hip doctor & found out she has serious arthritis in that hip (other hip is fine - go figure!) & needed a replacement. She always has the best garden & plants about mid-April so she should be good to go or close to it by then.

We're getting a cool off too and suddenly, days of rain. Wonder how hard it would be to make the top of the tunnel open like a big clam shell to let it rain in there? LOL Days but not much per day so it will only total an inch. More like sprinkles or drizzle it sounds like. Gutter, need gutter, and two more IBC tanks.(just another few hundred $$$)

Originally we were going to get two days of rain/snow/sleet aka wintry mix so I was going to leave the compost in the bed of the truck for the weight/traction and just keep it tarped when not driving. Lowest temp now is 34 so I'm going to shovel it out tomorrow. Got some pond liner plastic laid out to put it on and then I'll tarp it. It's at the perfect moisture level right now and I want to keep it that way. Found a spot out of the way but close to, and uphill from, the tunnel/garden area.

That is good news! I’m glad your niece is stepping up to help care for her!

Today is was nearly 60, and pretty sunny! I was running around doing errands, so I hope tomorrow is nice again, so that I can go outside and start checking things out. It felt like a real Spring day, and now I can hardly wait to get gardening!

Among my stops today was an unplanned one. I went to Meijer to get a few household supplies, and in particular, I was looking for fire starters. They were out of the kind I like, but the app said they had some in stock. So the customer service lady reminded me that Menards is just one long block away.

Well!! That turned into an adventure! I found the fire starters, but figured I should get some fixings for the backyard birds while I was there. Their prices are always so great, but it’s not exactly near my house, so I don’t often go there. Time to fill up my cart! So I did! Found some light bulbs that aren’t easy to find, and a new toilet seat for the guest bathroom that broke with our recent houseguests. For an unplanned stop, it turned into a bonanza! Well done, Menards! (And hat tip to the Meijer customer service lady for the suggestion!)

Egad, where has February gone? I’ve been so busy I hardly know which end is up.

As usual, the rain reaches you first, so, I have TWO days to complete various outdoor projects, maybe grill something outdoors if we can get calm conditions one evening...

But, we do need the rain badly. The burn bans we have are in place for good reason. :-(

I worry that since my Mom had severe arthritis problems, I’ll end up with such too, but, this last month my biggest “pain” has been come and go muscle pain at the top of the ol’ gluteus maximus, on both sides. I guess I’ve just overworked ‘em - they seem to be worse the better the lifting technique I use!

Plus, I never give them enough real time to recover - there’s always more work to do.

Better there than actually in my lower spine, I think! Ooh-ooh-ooh...
