January 2026 Snow Storm

Posted on 01/22/2026 5:14:26 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Nobody seems to have begun a thread for the snowstorm that is forecast for this weekend, so I thought I would.

Where I live (DC Metro area) a big snowstorm is relatively rare. We're the ones who don't really know how to drive in it because we don't get a lot of practice; and we also crowd the grocery store and wipe out the shelves - often for stuff we don't really need, and for a forecast that doesn't amount to much but flurries.

But once in a while, we really get whacked; and I think this may be one of those times. (My husband grew up in the wilds of Pennsylvania, and laughs at what we consider 'getting whacked' down here.)

I'm hoping we get lots of snow, and little or no ice; and hope everyone will be safe.

Let us know what you are doing to prepare, if you live where it might hit.

“The weather people have been fluctuating a lot on this storm over the past few days.”

Conspiracy theory: It’s possible that the weather services are in cahoots with Uncle Sam to manipulate the economy. On Wednesday, we were predicted to get 15” of snow Saturday, and maximum ice on Sunday.

Our Generac people were swamped selling and installing as many systems as they could. Grocery stores were cleaned out. Lowe’s and HD were swamped.

Then predictions petered out, to 2” of snow and a little rain. Snow was supposed to have started a couple hours ago, but so far nothing. It seems that they over-hype weather events.

If you have been observing the radar conditions actually always present, you can see with your own eyes that the storm is changing as it progresses toward the northeast.

The same is true of the barometric contours indicating the change in the relative high and low pressure gradients.

In the main, the storm remains intact, but on the northern and southern fringes the precise track and projected track are quite variable.

“It’s amazing how people forget that they’re allergic to gluten during a snow scare.”

Then they immediately need to find an alternate attention-seeking fad.

We love Dave’s bread. Have been trying to cut back on carbs, so haven’t bought any in a while.

Why do you store water to flush the toilet? Are you on well water?

I know that the family’s homestead is on a well and toilets won’t flush without electricity. (The pump or something.) But ours are fine with or without power.

My tree people are over. We changed our plans to just take down the limbs that endanger my house, and to reduce the weight of the more dangerous tree. With any luck we make it through the night without a big tree limb in my bed. LOL

No; but water mains can break when we get the kind of temperatures they’re expecting. It’s happened here even in the Summer, and we had no water for days while they repaired it. Can’t flush without water.

Well, we’ve managed to get in everything we need and don’t have to go anywhere; so we’re ready for anything.

I just hope there isn’t freezing rain, and that it doesn’t get as cold as they say it will.

I know we seem like weather wimps when I see some of what other parts of the country go through in Winter; but this area just isn’t used to it.

Yup. I'm in NorthEast Georgia. We also aren't used to it.

When I was a kid, a big snow made the world feel like a different planet. Still does in a way...

‘Ice’ is nice.

there’s a man named John Serrie who composes ‘space music’. Planetaria and NASA have used his music:
