Food prices climbed sharply in December, providing little relief to consumers at the grocery store and adding to the political pressure on President Trump to improve affordability.
The 0.7 percent jump in food prices from a month earlier was the largest one-month increase in grocery prices since October 2022. That was up from 0.2 percent in September, the last month the federal government released month-to-month inflation figures for after the shutdown disrupted data collection.
Compared with a year earlier, overall food prices were up 3.1 percent and grocery prices were up 2.4 percent in December.
The increase could frustrate consumers who have been facing higher costs at the grocery store for years. On the campaign trail, Mr. Trump promised to swiftly enact policies that would bring prices down for food and other products if he was elected.
The sharp increase in food prices is a contrast to overall inflation, which remained steady at the end of 2025. Still, groceries are among the most visible costs to consumers and increases in food prices could be politically painful for Mr. Trump. Food costs were a central issue that plagued the Biden administration during the 2024 election.
In recent months, Mr. Trump has underscored the drop in egg prices, which continued to fall last month, declining 8.2 percent. Retail prices for eggs have been falling after reaching record highs last year amid a bird flu outbreak that hit poultry farms and forced producers to cull millions of hens.
Food categories that have gotten more expensive include fruits and vegetables, which saw their prices rise 0.5 percent from the previous month. Coffee prices climbed 1.9 percent. Beef and veal prices also rose 1 percent over the month and were up 16.4 percent from a year earlier.

Yes, and temperatures dropped sharply around the same time. Surely, there must be a correlation. Surely.
Oh, and water is continuing to be wet.
You are correct it is. Sorry, my eyesight plays games with me due to macular degeneration. I stand corrected. 😁👌
Still the 8.4 is an unreality to begin with, because inflation never repeasts itself month after month due to weather & other factors. But.7 for a month is still nothing to break the bank..
Besides that the cost of things is really higher then it would be due to the devaulation of the doller by the uncotrolled spending, more so than inflation. Prices usually rise during the winter months due to certain items becoming scarce. If they are available, they come from places located outside of the nation.
Maybe I’m just a wise shopper by doing as much of that shopping at Grocery Outlet, Costco, Aldi now and then, along with my local Stator Bros.
Staples like bacon, eggs, milk, chicken are back to where they were pre pandemic / Biden. Beef is still up but it is often on sale for close to 2021 levels. My litmus is Choice Ribeye’s and Beef Flanken Ribs for Korean BBQ. Both are about $3 a pound higher non sale price then four years back. Later today I’ll be picking up a few pounds of flanken ribs for $6.99lb. about $1 more than a few years back. On rare occasion $4.99 a pound would show up at the local Hispanic grocery > Superior markets.
We are hardly struggling to put food on the table in spite of what the media is trying to sell. I suspect So Cal prices are higher than other areas of the country.
Nice. Donate the other one. Thanks in advance.
food prices went up between thanksgiving and christmas holidays.. prices are going back down now.
The article says rising food prices “could” frustrate consumers. You think? I’d think if everyone were buying more, that maybe they would decrease a little. But then that might make sense.
$100.70 but who’s counting
Miami Douchebag was already taken.
increase demand always raises prices, that is basic econ, you could not be more wrong
exactly, they always do.
😁👌
Thanks for wishing me death. Have a happy new year.
Yes, President Trump could just wave his magical wand and cancel out all of the idiotic policies that the Democrats and RINOs have enacted over the last half century. Hmmm... What could be stopping him?
