According to a global survey of 130 countries conducted in 2019 (Kramer 2019), the US had the highest rate of children living in single-parent households of any nation in the world, at about 23%, or more than three times the worldwide level of 7% (Figure 1).
The prevalence of these cases was markedly lower in neighboring Canada and Mexico (15% and 7%, respectively), and much lower in developing countries, all below 5%.
For decades, the share of U.S. children living with a single parent has been rising, accompanied by a decline in marriage rates and a rise in births outside marriage (Livingston 2018). The percentage of US children living in single-parent households nearly tripled between 1960 and 2023, increasing from 9% to 25% (US Census Bureau 2023). In the same period, the share of households with fathers missing more than doubled, increasing from 11% to 25% (Figure 2).
The proportions of children living in a father-absent household varies considerably among America’s three major social groups: in 2023, the shares were 20%, 29% and 50% among Whites Hispanics and Blacks, respectively, and in all three groups they are substantially higher than 50 years before (Figure 3).
Children who grow up in a household with only one biological parent are worse off, on average, than children who grow up with both of their biological parents, regardless of the parents’ race or educational background (McLanahan and Sandefur 1996). For instance, they are nearly four times more likely to live in poverty (Brewer 2023), have more trouble academically, scoring poorly on tests of reading and mathematics, and are more likely to drop out of school.

This explains single motherhood among rich, college educated feminists, but these account for a tiny fraction of single mothers. Feminist noise-makers on college campuses often opt out of being mothers of any kind, single or not.
The overwhelming majority of single mothers are ghetto types who don't even know what feminism is. They're single mothers because A. they lack self-control in who they have sex with and the foresight to use birth control and B. they know that the more children they have a single mothers, the more welfare benefits they can collect.
A male democrat cannibal prefers to go it alone, rather than to stay home and be burdened with sharing “human spare ribs” with the family. Especially if the ribs are White meat.
Several developed countries are above the world average for single-parent households. Probably the “single parent” is female in all but a few cases.
Feminazis have long held that fathers are dispensable. This is the fruit of their bogus ideology!

I know the value of bureaucracy creation and maintenance to Dems, but that is a pretty lame excuse. Making the horn dog young fellows pony up is still simply the right thing to do.
And the "help" should be reimbursed by the absentee parent. If he lived with the kiddo and mama and maintained the home, there would be less financial need for the kiddo.
It is invalid to point to poverty as the causal reason: In the 1950s, when Jim Crow was still prevalent in much of the country and Blacks were still to be found largely in the underclass, single motherhood was still rare among Blacks!
Thus, I reject both racism and poverty as causal reasons for illegitimacy among Blacks!

It is inspiring to listen to Thomas Sowell on this topic. He grew up poor as a church mouse in a devoted family, as was the typical case in the day.

The south was flooded with cheap foreign labor displacing blacks etc into the labor pool. At the same time, politicians were adding people to welfare etc. So, many groups look to crime and drugs for a way out. Very much planned.
I didn't say that poverty was the cause. I said that single motherhood was prevalent among impoverished people, particularly black ones. There's a difference. Dysfunctional behavior - i.e. lack of discipline and self-control, leads to poverty, just as it leads to single motherhood.
I also said that radical feminist ideology doesn't have much to do with either because I very much doubt that the typical slum dweller spends her time reading radfem pamphlets.

Last I checked, the % of foreign born residents in the US now (15.8%) is about the same as it was in 1915. The difference is that the latter was not incentivized by welfare, but to work, coming from a culture of work, but while most immigrants to the US do want to work - less foreign born are on welfare than among native-born Americans - yet both classes are incentivized to obtain welfare. The gov. itself has spend millions promoting SNAP. 42 million Americans are enrolled.
