Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Click here for a list of FAQs.

What's Changing?

Sponsors can request card renewals online through ID Card Office Online. Cards will be printed by the Government Publishing Office and mailed to the card recipient via U.S. mail.

The Sponsor and the card recipient must have email addresses listed in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) that they have authorized DoD to use for contacting them.

Authorization to use email for official contact can be made under "My Profile" on the IDCO website ID Card Office Online.

The Sponsor's personnel status must extend at least 30 days in the future from the renewal request date.

The card recipient has a photo saved in DEERS taken in the last 12 years.

The card recipient's mailing address is present in DEERS and in the continental United States, Hawaii, or Alaska; or is an APO, FPO or DPO address outside the continental United States (OCONUS).

I used the online website to acquire my DoD Disabled Veteran ID card. It was quirky and took a few tries before it went thru. But I received the card in the mail 2 weeks later. It used my CAC ID card’s photo. Best of all the Exp. date is “Indef”. So I can use that to get on bases.

I'm former Army (6 years,no pension) and I've been trying to get permission to attend courts-martial in Massachusetts and Connecticut but they say I can't because they won't let me onto the base. The Rules for Courts Martial says that with a few exception (e.g., cases involving classified material) courts martial are to be open to the general public...including people with no connection to the military.

That really annoys me.

“We went to the ID facility in the local Army Reserve Center. ... Sorry to disappoint the boo-birds out there.”

Yeah, because everybody on the forum lives next to and has access to your ‘local Army Reserve Center’. What, you think we all live in holes in your front yard?

I have a friend who with several others have been working on this for over a year, with no results, no answers.

“I’ve been trying to get permission to attend courts-martial in Massachusetts and Connecticut....”

Go to the base visitor’s center. It’s usually just outside the gate. Explain the situation. They’ll take your DL and issue you a day pass. If you have a VA ID card they may take that. Unless you have a service related ID card (VA, DoD medically retired etc.) you likely don’t qualify for a base access type ID. So just do the day passes. Same way civilians do it.

And if you go to the CAC office website, it says make an appointment, which you can't do unless you can get thru this maze. And of course they don't give the CAC office phone # to make an appointment.

You can go to almost any ID office on base for walk-in service without making an appointment. You might be there a while but it's not too bad. The computer process for making new CAC cards has sped up considerably over the years.

The ones on the Navy bases here in San Diego are run almost entirely by civilian retirees and they're very helpful at answering questions.

And yes, the log-on systems have become so convoluted that a significant portion of TAPS class is helping you establish accounts. They're working on them. Okta Verify is supposed to be the "one size fits all" log-in for the future but even this isn't a certainty yet.

Many thanks! I have no military ID (discharged 1975) and like I said I don't get any kind of pension. Groton,CT and Chicopee,MA are about an hour drive from me so I suppose I could bring my driver's license and passport...and maybe a copy of my DD-214...and try my luck.

If I'm allowed to enter I assume that they won't allow my car on base so I'll just have to find someplace not too far from the gate. I just hope that when they "wand" me they believe that I have two metal hips. I've never had a problem at airports.

I've been trying to get permission to attend courts-martial ...

I suspect one call to the office of the Area Defense Counsel (ADC) would resolve that.

Your metal hips are titanium and won’t set off metal detectors cuz they’re non-ferrous.

The base pass from Visitor’s Center is all you need to get on and around base -with your car. You may need a Red Badge for building access to the courts martial area and that will likely be from the Site Security Office (SSO) which is usually separate from the gate and visitor’s center.

Because of all the nuances and bored guards with guns I recommend a trip or two beforehand for familiarization. You can ask for a base map at the visitor’s center.

DD214 is good to show military affiliation but I don’t think it’ll be used. You’ll just go in as a civilian.

Without a DoD ID tho you can’t use shopping facilities which is a bummer. You may try and go to a local VA hospital or clinic, do a walkin and complain about something from your time in service. They’ll send you to get a VA ID so they can check you out at the Dr.s. You will need your DD214. It’s No Cost and you’ll have a VA ID even at initial 0%. This should (i think) get you entered into Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) which can put you on the path of a permanent ID good for base access, etc. Hopefully they will use your VA ID for DEERS enrollment.

You’re qualified and capable of getting on base so ...go for it.

Well,I did sustain a head injury (a minor one) in BCT. I was on light duty for 48 hours and no problems since. Claiming one now just to get an ID sounds interesting but I'd be afraid of getting caught and winding up in Federal prison. As for my hips...I always set off the alarms at airports and then they send a guy with a wand.

True story: a couple of years ago my Korean American girlfriend and I went to the ROK to visit her family. She told me that she always wanted to see a PX so we went to Usan Air Base trying to get in.I told her we'd probably fail but we could try. We got to the gate and I showed my driver's license which has "Veteran" listed on it. But the guard said "no". I wonder if they might have thought my girlfriend was a Nork spy...but she had her US passport.

Spent an hour in her office talking about every imaginable subject that came to her mind.

Sounds like she is bored silly because nobody is making appointments.

I have an appointment next week at old Kelly AFB to get my new type of retiree ID card. It’s at the 433d Airlift Wing.

Well, Korea is still a combat zone so they’re always at a higher Threat Con or whatever than stateside. The guard isn’t going to recognize a civilian designation of Veteran on a Driver’s license! A notarized DD214 would have worked. But you first go to Visitors Center to have them deal with IDs or a base pass. They decide what works or doesn’t. They’ll give a temp base pass or tell you what you need to do for a permanent ID. Then you go to the gate.

Your head injury should definitely qualify you for a disability rating and VA ID if you still have symptoms like difficult vision, dizziness, etc. I had a roof come down on my Kevlar with about a thousand lbs and still have dizziness, numbness, etc. Got rated for that and migraines which came with the back and neck injuries taken from that. I’m 220% with about another 80% still outstanding.

The VA only rates you or not. They’re not going to call the police on you LOL, but I’m sure some would like to! They look for active duty records of the conditions. You were on quarters to 2 days after a documented head injury. It may be difficult if there isn’t a trail of treatment for it. But most VA ratings are based on time in service damaging the body or limiting it later on. Example: eating fast in the Chow hall leads to bad eating habits which causes Gerd, etc. 30 years on. Or high blood pressure, or diabetes, etc. Those are real things ppl file for (but not me).

All my stuff is service-connected, line of duty, in my medical records, treated and current. A lot of ppl tho get disability based upon the course of their lives after military service being less than someone who didn’t enlist hence: “the military did it to me”. I look at it as: If I hadn’t gone in the military would I have this problem?” If the answer is No then the VA will probably recognize it and rate it.

All my stuff is active duty, service-connected with medical records and continuous symptoms and treatment to today. I don’t take any side-eyes when I park in Disabled parking with the Disabled Vet plate. I’m not some 10-years after service Plantar Fasciatis or sleep apnea rating.

Just get in the VA system and bring all your problems to them. You get even a 0% rating you have access to VA healthcare for life. Ain’t the best and they do try and kill you but, if nothing else, you have the Obamacare-required ‘medical insurance’ required so you don’t have to go out and buy it to avoid the fine.

It is still easy-peasy. I made an appointment this past Fall at Maxwell AFB and it took me less time getting the ID than it did driving to the base from home. I got the appointment made online.

However, I can’t imagine trying this overseas; I’m sure that was a hassle. But you cannot assume that case is true on a stateside base.

I know you said it was easier with your first wife in Bangkok and understand you don’t mean now. But this shouldn’t be so hard.

I renewed both mine and my wife’s ID cards online earlier this year and had no problems. They arrived in the mail a week or so later.

Yes,I understand why I was denied entry. In fact I can even understand why they would deny entry to an unknown Korean like my girlfriend. Major Hassan certainly motivated the DoD to seriously rethink base security. As for your injuries versus mine yours are clearly the real deal and any claim I would make would,as you put it,qualify me as a sleep apnea faker.
