Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, former Trump loyalist, says she is resigning from Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, a loyal supporter-turned-critic of President Donald Trump who faced his political retribution if she sought reelection, said Friday she is resigning from Congress in January.

Greene, in a more than 10-minute video posted online, explained her decision and said she didn’t want her congressional district “to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for,” she said.

The opening in her district means Republican Gov. Brian Kemp will have to set a special election date within 10 days of Greene’s resignation. Such a special election would fill out the remainder of Greene’s term through January 2027. Those elections could take place before the party primaries in May for the next two-year term.

MTG’s claims that she was always standing up against the political insiders of Washington are completely at odds with her outspoken support of ultimate GOP insider Rep. Kevin McCarthy during his leadership battles back in 2023.

Her ambition is to be a private citizen

Trump ran her out of Congress AND politics. Way to go!

Very sad day for MAGA. She was a trooper but this and her latest attacks on Trump make no sense.

I actually supported MTG and Massie on that one — for the simple reason that it demonstrated an understanding of the practical limitations a House member has when dealing with 434 others.

My point is that her resignation letter makes it seem like she’s forgotten all that … or (perhaps more likely) she’s just lying about her motivations now.

Agreed, I'm sorry to see her go.
She is pro-life, anti-Fauci, and understood that our national debt is out of control.
I like her.

Complaining about continuing resolutions and a growing national debt while clamoring for $1.5 trillion in ACA subsidies for insurance companies makes her sound like a hypocrite at best and an unhinged head case at worst.

Somewhat. MTG always seemed a little odd to me. She seemed to be in politics for reasons that were confusing.

I think she genuinely cares…but has a had a rough go in her personal life that seeps through into her public persona.

One sketchy point though is that apparently she became a multimillionaire during her time in Congress? Allegedly through insider trading.

Why Republicans are in trouble?

- Economy
- Labor market numbers
- Cost of Living/Affordability crisis
- Volatile Healthcare protections for most Americans
- Debt driven livelihoods

- Lack of inspired candidates
- Lack of campaign infrastructure building now that the likes of Lara Trump isn’t at the helm of the RNC
- MAGA fracturing and fault lines being laid bare on issues as far ranging as H1B visas to Epstein files, foreign policy, etc…
