A man hunting for fishing worms near his summer house in the Stockholm area has made an amazing discovery: a large hoard of silver coins and jewelry from the early Middle Ages. The hoard, weighing around six kilograms (13 pounds), consists of thousands of silver coins mixed with rings, pendants, and beads.
The finder immediately informed the Stockholm County Administrative Board, which began an archaeological excavation of the site. The hoard is described by experts as unusually large and well-preserved. The items were placed in a copper cauldron that has mostly decayed over the centuries.
“This is likely one of the largest silver hoards from the early Middle Ages ever found in Sweden,” Sofia Andersson, an antiquarian at the County Administrative Board, said in a statement. “We don’t know how many coins there are yet, but I think it could be as many as twenty thousand.”

But did he at least get some worms?
And did he get to go fishing?
I suppose that we can hope that this sort of thing happens frequently, and we just don’t hear about it...
Here’s what it says near the end of the article: “The County Administrative Board will report the discovery to the Swedish National Heritage Board, which will decide whether the state will claim the treasure, meaning the government will compensate the finder for its value.” It would be interesting to follow this and see how it turns out.
One can hope that the hoard will at least end up in a museum, and some remuneration will go to the finder.
The real question is how much of the loot will end up in the archeologists’ pockets. Coins are easy to hide.
Absolutely, spread it out.
Yes, it really should be in a museum somewhere like Stockholm.
The suspect value of these coins far exceeds the $50/oz for US Silver Bullion coin.
If not, some auction house could sell some these items for 10x that.
😊
Thanks!
A thousand years from now archaeologists will find peoples 1960’s Beer Tab curtains and wonder what they hell they are................
No doubt the Swedish gubmint will scoop up most of it and say “Thanks, chump!”
$10400
At 50 per oz
Think of the guy in Hell who tried to keep his wealth safe...only to lose his soul....and then it be found all the same and taken without his permission!
Hell just felt WORSE for one guy!
Read the whole thing, apparently the Swedish government will BUY discovered treasure ,unlike the French ,British and others who just take it. The laws giving treasure from 300 year old Spanish wrecks to Spain is disgusting.
Neglecting numismatic value.
Hmmm...Viking booty...

It certainly will! This may be the guy’s best fishing day ever!
Silver is over $51 and refiners have stopped purchasing anything other than .999 or .9999 silver.
No sterling silver or 90% or less.
