U.S. Bans Iran Diplomats From Costco, Buying Luxury Goods Without Permission

President Donald Trump’s administration has banned Iranian diplomats from shopping at wholesale club stores and purchasing luxury goods while in America for the UN General Assembly.

Newsweek reported that the Iranian diplomats love Costco because they can purchase items in bulk that they can’t buy in Iran.

The rule applies to Iranian diplomats who represent the country at the UN all year.

According to The Associated Press, the diplomats need permission from the State Department:

In notices to be published this week in the Federal Register, the department’s Office of Foreign Missions determined that diplomatic memberships in wholesale club stores as well as diplomats’ ability to buy items such as watches, furs, jewelry, handbags, wallets, perfumes, tobacco, alcohol and cars are a “benefit” requiring U.S. government approval.

However, the only country whose diplomats were specifically targeted is Iran. Stores like Costco have been a favorite of Iranian diplomats posted to and visiting New York because they are able to buy large quantities of products not available in their economically isolated country for relatively cheap prices and send them home.

Wouldn’t it be easier just to ban Iranian diplomats from all US property?

Let them travel between the UN building and the airport. And that’s it.

... or they could access UN via zoom call from the airport or their home country. Reduced CO2 footprints and all.

Good point.

I suppose those tricky Iranian diplomats could get around all this by having someone make straw purchases for them. Still, that would cause them some aggravation. And that’s a good thing.

Any ban on “luxury” goods at Costco? Costco/BJs/etc don’t sell “luxury” goods, they sell crap and processed junk food.

That’s not true. Each store sells some different things based on the demographics of the area it’s located in. You must live in a low income area if that’s all Costco sells near you. In high income areas or areas where the demand is higher for Luxury goods, such as NYC, they sell some of that stuff.

That could be it. Pork. Alcohol. Maybe other haram items. Catch ‘em with that stuff and show it to the average Iranian (or their Republican Guard) and see where that lands them.

Fair enough. I retract partially, AU/AG are indeed luxury goods. They are literally selling money for fiat dollars.

Islamist poobahs, who love to send the young to their deaths while hiding in their mansions, have never been known for walking the walk. Next step is to start following their forays into hooker country.

It might be a regional thing; but, Costco sells the best cuts of meat to be found. Their vegetables are also of good quality. Costco ice cream is the stuff of dreams.

This is so petty. Today, the diplomatic arena is breaking down due to the West’s own misuse of diplomacy and diplomatic facilites. We have weaponized every possible facet of every international relationship under Trump. Since Obama this has been ongoing, but with Trump 2.0 we have the US burning agreements and nicities to the ground as we lost our grip on running the world as we see fit.

As a retired member of the US Department of State Foreign Service, I find this type selective conduct of diplomic mission to be a signal that the US no longer has the upper hand. We are no longer maganamous towards all, but rather we have become a petty selfish government without any actual sense of looking beyond the immediate time and place, only to lose future good will.

Obama’s transformation of the US and how we interact with the rest of the world is instructive of how democrats ruin everything, but that it has been nearly 20 years since Obumer’s election, he has infected the thinking of even Trump and Rubio.

They don’t sell luxury items in bulk. Paper products and drinks are sold in bulk, everything else not so much more than up-sized for a family.

If I were interested in buying Iranian diplomats, I wouldn’t buy them from Costco.
