Four special operations soldiers were aboard an Army Black Hawk helicopter that crashed Wednesday night in a rugged area of Washington state.
This is “currently a search mission” involving the “most professional and skilled addressing the situation,” Army representative Ruth Castro said, according to the Associated Press.
The Army has not released any comment about the conditions of the soldiers.
The MH-60 Black Hawk, assigned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, was on what the Army called a routine training flight at the time of the crash, according to The New York Times.
The helicopter crashed at about 9 p.m. PT in the area around Summit Lake near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the Army said.

AVIATION PING!...........................
No word from military or ground people trying to get to the site, lots of burning stuff around the area.
Downed? It was shot down?
is it by that same airport where the last one went down?
another DEI pilot?
Counting President Trumps’, isn’t this the 3rd military chopper down in the last few days?
160th is an extremely good unit. And they push the envelope like others don’t. God bless these men, holding out hope until we know for sure.
Local altimeter settings are critical.
I live in Olympia. I saw such a helicopter flying overhead on my way home from work at about 6 pm last night, headed in the direction of Summit Lake, which is located in the hills just west of Olympia. It could easily have been the one that crashed.
Such helicopters do appear around here from time to time. There was nothing I saw about the helicopter that suggested it was having a problem.
Officially an “Aviation Mishap.”
Weird. They know exactly where it went down but it must be very difficult access and there is no report from the actual scene yet. There is no word of any communication from the helo before or after the crash.
Information is being held back, not a good sign.
Lemme guess.....the altimeter was broken.....AGAIN
Praying! I lost a First Sergeant to a chopper crash back in the day. It took us a long time to find them all, too. The Commander and two others survived, but were pretty badly injured.
A night search in the woods for a downed chopper is an experience you’ll never forget. :(
all 4 souls on board are dead.
I live in the flight path of JBLM choppers. Many flights of Black Hawks, Apaches and Chinooks head west to the coast and some bear north to the Olympic National Forest.
It was not on an unusual route based on what flies over almost daily
“Deputies have located what is believed to be the scene,” the sheriff’s department said in a post on its official Facebook page. “We have been advised that the military lost contact with a helicopter in the area, and we are working closely with JBLM to deploy any resources needed to assist.” In a separate post, Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders wrote that deputies who first found the crash site had to stop rescue efforts. “Deputies located the crash site but have been unable to continue rescue efforts as the scene is on fire and is starting to overheat their footwear,”...
Doesn’t sound good.
Yes. They practice like they fight. Practicing is dangerous work for men like those.
Probably just another “hard landing” (News Fart Lingo). I hope nobody was killed.
Yes indeed.
15,000 USAAF pilots and crew died during World War II just training in the Continental US. Flying under simulated combat conditions is almost as dangerous as combat...
Many people are totally unaware of how many aircraft were lost in training in World War II (and after)
It is a huge mind-boggling number…
