The Garden Thread - September, 2025
September 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 09/01/2025 4:39:33 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

I’ve watched that video before. Waiting on my pawpaws another week or more to go.

Walmart is selling a Pistachio nut butter from Italy in their peanut butter area, at least in my area. Its great on toasted bread. I imagine you could use something to thicken it and use it for a cookie filling. (Bettergoods is the brand.)

Thx-—gotta get some of that.

Pistachio butter is good on toast, or as a base for creamy salad
dressings and sauces, and in ice cream, cookies, and chocolate confections.

Some cultures use it in savory dishes like pesto,
crostini toppings, or as a sauce for pasta and vegetables.

My Christmas ‘shortbread’ is baked with a ‘thumbprint’ in the center,
then filled with a pistachio filling and the same ‘drizzle’ when cooled.

Mmmmmm.....thumbprint.....means “more” pistachios.

I have two binders like that, already full, LOL! They will most likely go to Niece Dana, along with my ‘good’ jewelry when the time comes. ;)

I like that ‘Bettergoods’ brand. I buy their sparkling lime water every week. (Cans) Their CHOCOLATE BARS are really good, too - suitable for gift giving. Mom found those for our Easter Baskets this past spring. ;)

Yes. I’m 65 and my Mom still makes me an Easter Basket! :)

Here's a local 'waterway' clogged with Cattails and Joe Pie Weed. Made for a nice photo on a foggy morning, though!

That’s pretty. We get many mornings of fog off the river & it makes for some beautiful scenes.

Headed to the hospital this morning (before I get dirty & sweaty) to see my cousin, who is not faring well. I checked the dahlias & the blooms were either too old (petals falling off) or too new & unfurled to use. I thought the zinnias were ‘done’, but I found about 8 California Giant blooms that are still pretty. There were enough to make a colorful cluster in a small vase.

I love having home grown flowers to take to people. Next year I need to stagger the planting so they all don’t go to wrack & ruin at the same time.

Monarch update!

I have been keeping a watchful eye out on the caterpillars for weeks now. They’ve been inside when it dips below 55. I’ve had 35 caterpillars in various forms. About a week ago, I was able to bring the habitat outside again, and it sits on the deck just outside my sunroom. Easy access, and a good way to keep an eye on their development.

On Wednesday the first butterfly emerged from his chrysalis in the butterfly habitat. I’ve never gone through this process before, so it’s all new to me on timing and what to expect. Anyway, he seemed to want to be still a lot, didn’t seem interested in drying out his wings very much. It perplexes me. He didn’t even seem to want to go outside the habitat, so I figured he was just getting his strength.

Then, this morning, he seemed to have good energy, so I opened the screen for him to fly out. First he hopped onto a Cleome plant that I had in a pot nearby. After another 45 or so minutes, I saw him pumping his wings. He climbed towards the top of the plant, had a bit of nectar, and then took off, flying high in the sky before I knew it!

One down, 31 to go! (3 have deformed chrysalises.) I’m a proud foster mom to these Monarchs.

My grove of 5 or 6 trees. Planted too close together obviously. Look for the darker green leaves in the center. 0-02-01-c7397a29ee19d93fe5fda86d9b9b33838df0a5edf273f76b81c8f113984915c4-9307390180599525 Here are two of the lower branches, loaded. I tied them up years ago as the east side of the trees get most of the fruit. Still hanging mighty low from the weight. 0-02-01-2b768470bead7df44095bd62bdade633f55449335897193cd22597eb1652f1b2-eae1a961ddb565c5

Hubby is calling me his “little naturalist” the last few weeks.

At first, my family called me the deer whisperer, because whenever I went to visit Mom and take care of her every month, I always saw deer, and no one else did until I pointed them out.

Then they called me the bird whisperer, because I have learned a lot about backyard birds.

Then I was the owl whisperer, the fox whisperer, and now…now I am the Monarch whisperer!

I am totally untrained and just tried my best to give these little guys and gals a helping hand. I hope one of their progeny makes it to Mexico!

(remove bones)

Canned Salmon! The bones are one of the best parts!

I like canned salmon, and they are lower in Purines than Anchovies and other fish, so gout (an occasional issue) is not as much of an issue. In this household I am pretty much alone in this viewpoint.

(For anyone with a problem with gout, you need to avoid food with purines. Here is a link to a list of foods with Purines:

I put it in the refrigerator after opening and it solidifies. This butter has been sweetened.

Sprouts also sells Pistachio nut butter that has not been sweetened.

I thought about this when you posted your pistachio shortbread cookies recipe! Thank you!
