Target Names New CEO As Continued Boycotts Impact Sales

Whelp maybe those DEI rollbacks weren’t a great idea. Target has officially announced a major leadership shake-up, confirming that CEO Brian Cornell will step down from his position and transition into the role of executive chair of the Board of Directors. His successor will be the company’s current chief operating officer, Michael Fiddelke, who will take over as chief executive by February 2026.

The decision was revealed in a company statement on Wednesday, August 20, with the Board of Directors unanimously backing Fiddelke. Before becoming COO, he served as chief financial officer and is seen by the Board as the right leader to guide Target through turbulent times and steer it back toward growth.

In his first comments about the new role, Fiddelke expressed gratitude while also recognizing the challenges ahead. “It is truly an honor to be named Target’s next chief executive officer […] I am eager to refocus our strategy and build on the assets and capabilities that have made Target a beloved destination for incredible products and a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. And to be clear, we have work to do to reach our full potential. Now’s the time to take full advantage of our strengths, embrace change with pace and purpose, and regain our momentum.”

This leadership change comes at a moment when Target is dealing with both economic pressures and public criticism. The retail giant continues to face boycotts following its decision to scale back diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Sales dropped significantly in the first quarter of 2025, a decline Target attributes to tariffs and wider economic struggles.

The company also faced backlash in 2024 after reducing its LGBTQ+ Pride collection, a move that fueled debate across its customer base. Addressing the wave of criticism, Fiddelke told Bloomberg, “There are no shortage of critics out there today. The way to prove those critics wrong is with action that leads to results.”

As Target prepares for this leadership transition, all eyes are on Fiddelke to see whether he can deliver the turnaround that both Wall Street and everyday shoppers are waiting for.

“I saw a tranny working in the Target of Stroudsburg PA. Was “passable” until I heard him speak.”

I was watching a male to female person on-line. I had the sound turned off so as not to disturb my wife. He/she had really nice long well-coifed hair. I thought I was looking at a woman. My wife left the room, and I turned on the volume. The guy had a deeper voice than me! My perceptions changed instantly. Ick.

I have not been to a TARGET STORE since they refused to sell me a DVD of old Randolph Scott westerns from the 1950s. They wanted proof I was over 18 years of age as those movies were considered UNRATED, same as hardcore porn.
I was 64 years old at the time and looked every bit of it.

Didn’t businessmen used to be conservative in their corporate decisions, the boardroom changed and led to all this impulsive leaping into radical culture war stuff, impulsive, radical blind leaping into areas of societal life and political activism that have nothing to do with the business, and in fact are destructive to it.

Very LGBTQ+ leaning. Last year maybe even in 23, they displayed and sold LGBTQ+ clothing for children. Before that it was allowing trans men into women’s restrooms.
The ads for me are the deal breaker. Very anti while male. Apparently they don’t want our money, so guess what? Target isn’t getting any of mine.

Major K-mart vibes is the way Target has always felt to me. I get depressed just walking in one. Forget the culture war aspect, Target has always been awful.

Ever since that bathroom fiasco I’ve not stepped foot in that store, nor will I ever again.

Costco is run by some of worst progressives in the business. True believers for the left.

When a store asks me for proof of age I just point to my bald head.

It gets everybody around (including the cashier) cracking up....

Target’s woes are much more systemic and secular than stupidly involving themselves in the culture wars, which just made things worse for them ... Target will never compete with Kroger’s many grocery chains, Walmart, Costco, or Sam’s Club with the grocery part of their stores: higher prices and/or fewer choices ... and higher prices for OTC nostrums and fewer choices than amazon ... they also have to compete in clothing with walmart, kohls, costco and sam’s ...

When Target was on the rise 20+ years ago, the stores were well stocked, lighting was bright, they sold new and varied items, and they had a "hipster" vibe.

They have lost all that. Today I see bare or messy shelves - which for retail is like broken windows and graffiti.

Target has closed a total of 20 stores since 2020.

In 2020 Target temporarily closed 175 stores due to looting and violence related to Black Lives Matter protests.

That may be the case. The difference between them and Target is that, when I walk into Costco, I can't tell.

That makes all the difference in the world.

Blame the Government. At least in NY State anyway, anyone selling restricted items (in particular alcohol) must verify to the State that they are asking for proof of age and have a system and employee training in place to do so.

So big retail outlets simply scan your ID for their database in case they are audited by the State

Target should go under like many “woke” companies. I remember years ago they refused to have any Merry Christmas signs. We stopped shopping there then. They must be much worse now.
