Winters had contracted a bacterial infection which lead him into cardiac arrest for over two minutes while he was in an ambulance ride across Central Park
He was able to be revived by paramedics but got gangrene which resulted in two of his toes and half a thumb being amputated
He recently said: 'I haven’t taken a step since 2009 without being in pain . 'I’ve got neuropathy on, you know, on a whole different level where I can’t feel my hands and my feet. But if I stepped on a pebble, it’s like I go through the roof'
Winters also said he originally turned down the Allstate Insurance role because he was undergoing a 10th surgery but he said the company was 'relentless'
He said: 'It’s crazy if you look in the Webster dictionary, the Old English definition of the word "mayhem" is "one with amputations"'

He is known for starring as Mayhem in the Allstate Insurance advertising campaign.
And Dean Winters knows all to well what the effect of a whirlwind of chaos can cause someone in their actual life.

If you get a chance to see his work in HBO’s series “Oz”, it is unforgettable. So sorry to see him in such suffering.
He must have fun making those commercials!..............
He was diabolical in that show. What a wonderful job he did in that role.
I would never have known his names, but some of those commercials are pretty funny.
I enjoyed him in a few Law and Order episodes.
If he’s in so much pain, it must’ve been hell filming those basketball commercials with his brother.
I love your work, Mr. Winters. When one of your commercials comes on, I actually watch and remember it.
Allstate, I hope you pay him well. He's worth it.
He was in the first John Wick movie, one of the bad guys.
He had a brief role in the first John Wick movie as a gopher for a Russian mafioso.
He was also in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows”.
I imagine he’s suffering from some kind of peripheral artery disease. He simply isn’t getting proper blood flow to his body extremities
He’s not overweight. I wonder if he is diabetic or was a heavy smoker?
I saw that movie and thought that I had seen that guy before but couldn’t place him.
Neuropathy isnt constant pain, more uncomfortable- but like he said, step on something like a chord, pebble, bump or whatever and zowie!
I have it in feet and one hand from surgeries- where nerve was severed. I keep burning my hand reaching into oven to take out a roast or soemthing- don’t feel it- but if I accidently hit it on like a door casing or something, it let’s me know. The numbness is z pain, but I still have arm and hand and can use them, so thankful for that. In the feet, it feels like socks are bunched up under the foot all the time, not painful, but annoying.
How did he get this infection? The article does not give any details.
I have never seen ONE of those commercials. AMAZING! Many thanks for the link.
I’ve trapped 4 raccoons in the past two weeks......They killed one of my chickens..................
“ If you get a chance to see his work in HBO’s series “Oz”, it is unforgettable.”.
Let me guess, every other word is the f bomb and the script has everyone arguing constantly. That seems to be the story line of the day.
Thanks for posting. Funny commercials. Sad story.
