What kid isn’t fascinated to discover lightning bugs.

They were abundant when I was a child. Rarely see them now.

We had a outdoor gathering and the kids were delighted by the fireflies we had.

Only saw them a couple of times when I was stationed in SW Oklahoma in the 1970’s. They were magical to a city boy like me. They aren’t native to any other place I’ve lived, either before then or after.

They were like the stars in the sky when I was a kid on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. None in New Mexico, and they have dwindled in their habitats.

ADM is responsible for the decline in fireflies. ADM’s poison is everywhere.

Had some fireflies in my Michigan yard around New Baltimore last month, nice to see them.

The whole reason I created this thread was because there were many this evening, more than I’d seen in several years here.

I remember back before they figured out how to make luciferin, scientific chemical companies used to pay Boy and Cub Scouts to catch fireflies. A penny a piece sticks in my mind, but it might have been $1/thousand..

We have tons of them in Michigan. They love our heat and humidity.

An entire article, supposedly dedicated to helping fireflies, informs us that it is a predator, but it doesn’t tell us what their prey needs to eat and breed.

We’ve had a bumper crop this year. Dozens cover our back yard at dusk.

I was fortunate to see a LOT of fireflies in rural Connecticut in late June this year. :-)

The best way to see them is to get away from streetlights, etc. and be in a really dark area at night, ie the woods.
