Everybody was shocked — shocked! — when Stephen Colbert announced this week that CBS canceled “The Late Show.”
The despondent media reacted like a meteor was about to smash into Earth.
But how surprising was Colbert’s kibosh really?
Did peoples’ jaws also hit the floor when Blockbuster Video called it quits in 2014?
Were they muffling their screams when blimps were phased out for air travel in 1937?
“What do you mean ‘no more silent films’?!”
The end of “The Late Show” was every bit as writ-in-stone as any of those predictable downfalls.
And it’s not only Colbert. The Grim Reaper is coming for all of late-night TV. Those comedians in neckties are just ignoring Death’s deafening knock.
The retro programs, which began in the 1950s as an experiment to fill time, have far too tiny a viewership to justify their exorbitant cost anymore.
The Post reported Friday that Colbert’s talk show was losing $40 to $50 million per year. The Times watered down those figures to mere “tens of millions.”
Awfully hard to blame Trump for that.
True, “The Late Show” was beating the competition with 2.42 million nightly viewers on average during the first quarter. But just 9% of those eyeballs were in the 18-49 demo that advertisers covet.
That means no ad dollars because young people couldn’t care less.

Not really surprised it was cancelled. Times have changed.
I am surprised Saturday Night Live is still on. I expect it to disappear shortly after Lorne Michaels is gone.
The Tonight Show will be the very last one to be on the air.
Will we see conservative programming as a result of leftist media death?
No. I don’t think so.
Key components of the formula are now missing: engaging hosts, talented guests, and an audience that cares.
Carson defined the format. Nobody else comes close. FWIW, I have never watched Colbert, Kimble, or any of the other “late night” shows. They are not worth my time. Hilarious they were losing $50M on this guy.
Lol!
And I’m calling Bellevue cause you’re nuts!
I much fear serious trouble in the fuselage, Frederick.
No. Late night has been on since jack paar. Sine my parents were teens
There is something primal about our want of late night. Now you have prime and can do old shoes but people want a bedtime story. A light look at the news of tge day
Johnny had it
Dave letterman had in. Conan
Then the competitive asses took over Leno started that
Gutfeld is okay. If he would stop with the disgusting jokes he’d be a king
There’s no talent. Whatever talent there is has been shut out by envy, sponsors/corporate/ pharmaceutical industry
I haven't seen Colbert's show so I have no idea. When Letterman was on the program, I knew that he had an entire production. He needed his music band to be there. And he depended on his writers to come up with skits.
All I've seen from Colbert on X is that he has basically told Trump "* U".
I did see Colbert a little bit on the Comedy Channel and he was funny. But it was before he became political.
“loosing”
That’s not even a word. Not even an autocorrect
The word is lose. L o s e. Losing.
I miss Johnny Carson and Jay Leno...
It was revealed when he was given the cancellation news, how big his staff was. They had a big budget but I forget what it was.
Letterman was pretty good when he started out; then he got obnoxiously snarky.
Saturday night airtime, even on NBC, is available at infomercial prices.
I was shocked to hear that.
Right after he got back from being out for an emergency coronary procedure he had the day after he had HRC on the show
Yep
Bellevue's overrated. I asked my therapist how he felt about our lack of progress (turning the tables on him for once).
Not a thing worth watching at that hour
Old tv shows is it
My dad said that Johnny Carson was the best - he brought out the best in his guests. These two idiots all they do is slam Trump and conservatives and Republicans. They’re boring.
I bought a lot of Johnny Carson on laser disc. Both pretty obsolete these days, but I did love that man.
‘ Bellevue’s overrated. I asked my therapist how he felt about our lack of progress (turning the tables on him for once).’
What was the response?
