Cats aren't what you would typically imagine when asked about law, let alone medieval law, but the history of Wales is full of oddities, and the medieval cat laws (Cyfreith Cath), are no exception. Here we find laws deciding on their value, their jobs, and what their appearance should be.

Many cats actually like to bring “presents” to their owners; it’s a sign of love/affection.

I had a cat bring in a small black snake. Wasn’t sure what it was.
It was a snek.

Viking Kitties! Sweet Jesus, how long has it been?

Only a week. Bikkuri keeps a ping list, and you can help him feed the kitties, if you like.

YIKES!

The only "present" we ever got from a cat, was one tiny mouse, which somehow managed to get up to the 8th floor in a NEWLY BUILT Manhattan apartment building and in one of our closets. Needless to say, that promptly went down the garbage shoot. But that cat was a great mouser!

My cats leave their gift kills in the middle of the kitchen floor, where I can’t possibly miss seeing it, giving them praise and a few cat treats. They are usually mice or lizards-but once Merlyn brought a small frog-I’ve never figured out how a frog got in the door from the deck without being seen-and the river is about 1/2 an acre away...

When I was a kid one of our cats came to me and barred up a stink it had swallowed whole.

Wow-that must have been a shock-I’ve had cats bring me whole small snakes, but I’ve never seen a cat swallow anything whole...

It truly IS a Love/Hate Relationship. But I think cats instinctively know a SUCKER when they see one.

Grifters! Every last one I’ve ever known...and fed and watered and gave them a place to call, ‘Home.’

OMG! Cats are Democrats and/or Illegals! Gaaaaaa!

“My cats are spoiled, but they are working cats, responsible for pest control...”

That’s the only kind of cat to be owned by, IMHO. :)

I *highly* recommend this site for anyone wishing to learn what life was like for people in Medieval times. For me, writing fantasy novels, it has been an invaluable resource.

Thanks for the post. I am a cat lover. As a child, we had Blackie, Whittie, Snowball, Kittie, and Kittie Cat. They were all barn cats that kept our farm-house free of mice etc.

Flash forward many years, and we now have two rescues: A Siamese Seal Point and a Siamese Snowshoe.

They spent the last hour entertaining us. They crack me up.
